Rainbow Wools is located really close to Craft Works, making a trip up the Gloucester Road a must for all budding hobbyists. It’s not a shop I frequent too regularly, but I have been known to accompany my little Steiner friend(aged nine) when she’s running short on supplies. Being Steiner educated she could knit before she could write, and has now branched out into crocheting as well, so her consumption of the colourful stuff has increased. Since giving up smoking her mum’s caught the bug too. As a team they plan on knitting all of their Christmas gifts for this year. Yep, you got it, they’re knitting fools! It’s just as well they live quite close to this Aladdin’s cave of fleecy delight. Here they can get a complete fix for all their needs. There’s yarns of every texture and hue, needles, both fat and thin, and bendy ones too, patterns a plenty, and not just for clothes, there’s patterns for practically every animal I knows…

My friend and I decided to have a girly night in doing arts and crafts– not very student-like I know but great fun nonetheless. We tried knitting our own scarves for the coming winter months… unsuccessfully. We bought some different coloured wool from Rainbow Wools, and making a decision on which colours we were going to use was hard because there was so much choice. I was fascinated by the woollen window display. A spring scene of a meadow, with frolicking lambs and buzzing bees. My knitting skills will never be that good but if I were to attempt getting skilful at knitting, then I would definitely get more creative with all the woollen delights Rainbow Wools has to offer.

As of yet I have not found myself being tempted in to making my own clothes out of itchy fabrics, but a few friends of mine have, and they tell me that this place is a great stop for all your knitting needs. Over the winter months they crafted themselves an eye-opening assortment of gloves, hats and scarfs in a variety f shades and colours — not always matching their outfits, may i point out! My friends swear by this store, so for all you out there who enjoy attending your weekly Stitch & Bitch down the W. I should get yourselves along to this place to pick up everything you need — maybe even a few bits of gossip! There have an amazing range of colours of thread — way more than ther eare colours in a rainbow, and although my knowledge of general wool prices is… well…non-exsistent…they do seem reasonable.
