As an American that just landed from a dreadful early morning RyanAir flight… the Farm was an amazing surprise. My relative took me here for coffee and a breakfast sandwich; my first meal in England ! It was absolutely fantastic. Ambiance: 5 stars — very funky, unique — looks like its out of a fairy tale Service: 5 stars — very friendly staff Food: 5 stars — great coffee and the biggest bacon/egg sandwich I’ve ever seen… big and tasty ! Highly recommended NOTE: it may be hard to find for visitors to Bristol, but be patient and ask around. Better yet, google map it before you go, because you will not be disappointed.

St Werburghs Farm Café, adjacent to the inner-city St Werburghs Farm is a much loved meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Serving quality organic food and great coffee, it is often difficult to find a table in this surprisingly large café.(From the outside it looks like a small hobbit-built dwelling, but inside, the deceptively diminutive exterior, gives way to a spacious interior, with plenty of hobbit sized tables and seating.) It’s possible to take food and drink outside to on of the picnic benches situated in the mini-adventure playground to the front of the building. There’s quite a buzz to the place, especially in the mornings, with clusters of friends all indulging in animated discussions, although it’s not uncommon to see people taking root for breakfast armed with the days copy of the Guardian. There’s a very definite creative flavour to much of the chatter that goes on here, even the staff are all artists, musicians and writers. It’s definitely one of Bristol’s best child friendly bohemian spaces.

This is a really unique little café in the depths of the St Werbugh’s City Farm(which is also well worth a visit!). Shaped like a tree house, its slightly Gaudi-esque whacky interior gives a really nice atmosphere to chill out and grab a bite to eat. I had some sweet potato soap which set me back a little more than £5, but for the ethical organic goodness I really couldn’t complain about the price. It’s very children friendly, with toys and books dotted around the place. There’s also a computer that’s available for hired internet access. They host the occasional music/poetry night here, but these are generally one offs — they would undoubtedly do well if they extended their opening hours and sold alcohol, but this would perhaps take something of its charm away. There’s a bark covered play area with swings and seesaws at the front, so this is undoubtedly an excellent day out for any child — but equally appealing to adults too!

This is a lovely little place which is well worth considering if you fancy going somewhere a bit different for a bite(provided it’s during the day time). Set in a truly friendly environment, the enchanting interior has been designed specifically to resemble a treehouse, which is almost certainly a unique idea! I went in on a Saturay morning for a fry up which was about £7 with a cuppa, and was again a very original creation — I’ve never had spinach included before(though it was very nice). One word of warning: it can get a bit overrun with kids and the tables are very close together. I wouldn’t normally mind but the bloke sitting literally a foot away from me for some reason insisted on facing in our direction and shouting a childrens’ story over our conversation which isn’t the best ambience I’ve ever experienced. Even the dub music in the background couldn’t drown him out.

My new fave haunt is a lil café tucked in the depths of the city farm in St Werburghs. A suitably hippy hangout that just tonight played host to the Compass Festival Rhymes spoken word night, complete with rose petals on the tables and candlelight. The café is super enchanting — and looks remarkably like a Hobbit house from Tolkein. I nearly expected the proprietor Barny to have large furry feet! :) It literally looks like a tree house inside, with interesting carved windows and a sloped roof — as though inside the trunk of a tree. Cosy, natural and totally different feel to it than most places I’ve ever been. A big menu for such a tint venue, full of healthy, organic treats like homemade burgers with salad and homemade chutney. And the chocolate fudge shortcake is sweetly satisfying with a mug of their fairtrade coffee. You can gaze across from the otherworldy zone directly at the animals frolicking in the farm The worst(and only bad thing) about this blissful hideaway is that its generally not open in the evenings, which is a damn shame because it’d be packed out every night.
