The main draw of this place for me is the massive terrace out front, with huge tables and loads of space, so you can sit and relax with friends on a sunny day in the city centre and people-watch. It’s very stylish inside, and spacious, taking up most of the main foyer of the Colston Hall. The restaurant continues on upstairs, too. On my visit, my friend ordered an iced coffee and was presented with an extravagantly frothy, decadent thing in a tall glass. Like a chilled cappuccino! Not what we were expecting — but it was definitely impressive. It was £2.50, so, not cheap, but it’s a swanky bar, so I expected that. I haven’t sampled the food, but the menu looked very elegant indeed, with some very tasty-sounding options. This isn’t really somewhere to just pop in for a cheap, quick lunch. Be prepared to pay a bit more, enjoy posing in the grand atmosphere of the renovated hall foyer, and luxuriate.

The new and improved Colston Hall foyer is home to the swanky H bar. I quite like this place — but it has something of a transitory feeling similar to an airport. Perhaps this is because it’s newly opened and hasn’t quite built enough of a reputation to be a bar in itself — but at the moment it certainly isn’t a place you’d go to unless you had reason to be at the Colston Hall It has all the trimmings to be able to be that kind of bar though; the bar is well stocked, the drinks are fairly priced(surprisingly so in fact), the staff friendly and there’s plenty of comfy seating to relax in. Throw in a good tapas menu and you’ve got a good place. Perhaps in the summer it may take off a little more than it has done already, as the seating at the front will be a nice spot for a drink.

The H bar, I’ve got quite mixed opinions. I like the bar at the H bar, the staff are friendly, there is a nice selection of drinks and tapas dishes on offer(the chips are pretty cheap and with gorgeous aoli on the side.) The prices aren’t too horrendous on pints. The problem I have with the seating is that it’s one extreme or the other. You can either sit in the dark on dining tables in front of the bar, or round the side, in the glaring light of the Colston Hall foyer on semi comfy sofas. I’m looking forward to the summer, when you’ll be able to sit outside and enjoy the lanterns. I find the H bar somewhere cool to sit, plan and watch the world go by, but not a place for drinking per say.

When I heard that Colston Hall was undergoing a revamp my immediate thought was, ‘if it ain’t broke…’ but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Now the Hall offers a shiny gold exterior, bright-white foyer, a brand new restaurant and The H Bar. Before, finding pre-show drinks was a bit of a mission with the nearest descent bars being about a five to ten minute up-hill walk away. Over the years I’ve had to down many a glass of wine before and rush hurriedly to make it to my seat on time. Now, the H Bar makes you want to get to Colston Hall way before curtain call to enjoy the live music and good vibes. What makes it even better is that the drinks are good value for money — a round for three left me with change from a tenner: a rare treat for a venue bar! I wouldn’t make this a place to visit without going to see a performance after, but at least I can end up in my seat before the band starts playing.
