This place has saved my lazy student butt so many times while I was studying for exams. It’s located rather inconspicuously on the Christmas Steps. Had there not been a sign outside of it, I wouldn’t have given it a second glance. The sign outside of the shop has a message so sweet that an angel itself might have delivered it — £3.10 daily specials. And they don’t skimp on portions. And the special changes everyday. So for that £3.10, they pack the food in to the standard takeaway container so that the lid is bulging a little. The chicken chow mein is pretty decent, but the noodles might be a little dry at times. It’s still very good, and it isn’t chips from city centre so you can’t lose. The orange chicken and fried rice is really tasty though. I’m not usually a fan of orange chicken like some of my friends are. I hate it because the batter/sauce/meat ratio is always off and often times I bite through more batter than anything. The orange chicken here has just enough batter to coat the outside and give it something halfway between crunchiness and chewiness. The fried rice that came with it was just enough to mix with the remaining sauce(which wasn’t overly salty at all) and make super fried rice or something. They’re really fast at getting you in and out for takeaway orders and are always nice, which I really like. The only thing people might find bothersome is that the daily special is not made fresh, and instead is made in a huge quantity and served that way. It tastes good to me. Obviously not the best Chinese, but damn convenient and cheap.

There are few places you can go to get a decent Chinese takeaway in the centre of Bristol but if you take a stroll to Christmas Steps you’ll find the Rice Box, one of Bristol’s best kept secrets. Best known for the cheap and cheerful daily specials, you can pick up a chicken curry and rice for £3.00 — bargain! While you’re in this tiny little shop you can pick up a leaflet with all the daily specials for that month or simply take a butchers at their website. My only criticism is that the specials are almost never vegetarian but if you like chicken then you’re in luck as this crops up on the menu at least three times a week.

There are several different places for takeaway in the city centre but few are real value for money. Tucked away on Christmas Steps, Rice Box has been delivering delicious Chinese food for as long as I can remember. With over twenty years in the business it’s little wonder this place is always so busy. From a starting price of just £3 you can get your hand on one of the classic Rice Boxes. This is basically a meal of your choice with added boiled or steamed rice wrapped up in a unique carrying box. With their many years of experience they can take care of pretty much any order, be it for a party or for requests in advance. Chuck in the usual extras like Prawn Toast and some enormously scrummy Sweet and Sour sauce, and you can do a lot worse than a Rice Box!

This is actually a really decent Chinese takeaway, that’s tucked out of sight down the Christmas Steps before you get near the centre. It’s run by a really friendly couple called Steve and Lin, who are always very chatty and willing to make sure you’re happy. The setup involves a main meal and a rice in, well, erm, a box, although they also have some starters, soups and other bits and pieces if you want extra or a lighter bite. Plus, they’re bloody cheap — about £3 to £5! I went here on the off chance that I could grab a quick bite one day, and was so bowled over by the quality of the grub and the prices that I tend to go out of my way to get a rice box nowadays. Check ‘em out.
