If I had review just the drinking establishment of The Fox, I’d give it 5 stars. Hands down best place to have a drink in Burwell. The Mexican restaurant side… eh, not as good. I feel slightly biased since I’ve spent most of my life in San Diego, which is like northern Mexico. I ordered the beef enchiladas. The shredded beef inside was overcooked and dry and the tortilla holding it all together was actually burnt on the outer edges. And where was the enchilada sauce??? The brown rice on the side was a little different since I’ve never been served brown rice at a Mexican place before. It wasn’t bad, just different. My wife ordered the nachos with chili con carne. That was better to me than the enchiladas. In the end, I’m not sure I’d come back here for the food and also because it was pricey. The best part of the experience was the complimentary shot of tequila rose at the end.

Ate here with friends all ordered the various nachos mine was getting cold as the melted cheese was set hard like cheese on toast that has stood for a fair while, I had the fajitas with the beef, which was Cooked to well done I wish the would ask how I would like the rump cooked and not just do it to death, other than that a very nice mix of ingredients on the plate all of good quality and more than I could eat, this was the same for the other 3friends and the complimentary strawberry tequila to Finnish was a nice touch

When we first arrived, we stood there by the door waiting for someone to acknowledge us. There was confusion at first because we didn’t have a reservation. This is the type of restaurant that prefers you to make a reservation, but they’ll take you even if you don’t and your food will be made on order of arrival. We waited 2 hours to get our food, but we had a lovely time gossiping and having a laugh. Drinks were kept full, crisps re-filled, salsa and appetizers refilled. The service was good and delivered with a smile. The service is rated on a scale of 4. This is a classier restaurant so you don’t want to look like a bum rolling in for a bite. Coming from California and Texas I know Mexican food. I think the English’ perception of Mexican food was very creative and close to an American-Mexican food take. The red chili marinated beef is what I chose for my burrito. The meat was over cooked and ‘stewed’, where as in America or Mexico for that matter the meat is usually grilled, has natural juices flowing and a little bit on the greasy side, it is ‘scrumptious’, but this ‘stewed’ beef, did not do it for me. It tasted like the beef and shared the same consistency of the beef in beef stew. I ate my toasted flour tortilla and the guacamole and salsa only and kicked out the beef. The burrito cost around 13GBP. The chile con queso was also an English take on queso. It became lumpy and hard after a few minutes. Not sure if they used queso blanco, because that cheese falls apart when it cools off. Guacamole was good. Margarita was awesome. I really enjoyed the complementary Tequila Rose shot to finish off the meal. Would like to see more variety on the menu like an authentic Mexican style tortilla soup.
