We came here for a pit stop cup of tea and got tempted by their display of home baked goods. We ordered the sausage rolls and a flapjack and pots of breakfast tea. The tea was delish — loose leaf but strong! The sausage rolls were also very tasty — it tasted as if there’s some black pudding mixed in, giving it an additional depth of flavour. My flapjack was nice enough but the White chocolate icing was a bit too sweet for my tastes. The space was nice enough — decked out with a lot of naked Edison light bulbs hanging from the ceiling but despite the mismatch furniture, lacked the cosy feel it was going for.

Great café with a record shop at the bottom. This is one of my favourite places for lunch as they make excellent lunch specials(eg. Chicken casserole, sweet potato and lentil Dahl etc). They have good drinks, cakes etc. One reviewer on here was concerned about the hygiene. I have not noticed the same but have in general noticed that these things are a lot more laxed in Europe. Coming from North America you cringe a little but have to turn a blind eye a little or just stop eating out. Having said that Relevant is clean. So no issues there at least for me.

This review is about the café part of the shop. I had some hope for this one because from the outside it appears modern and clean, and they were advertising something called«Mexican Brunch», which is something I had been expecting not to ever find in the UK, so I was surprised to find it right away. The«Mexican Brunch» turned out to be potatoes with chorizo and some gooey, oily sauce in a mug. Actually not too bad, although not what I was expecting. That is not why I gave a one star review, however. No, what has earned the one-star review in this case is the fact that I observed the kitchen staff violate almost every single health code rule about washing dishes, putting the customers at risk of receiving painful foodbourne illnesses. I suppose the one good thing they did was to conduct this behavior in view of all the customers by washing dishes up front at the café bar. I’ve worked in a commercial kitchen myself(albeit in the USA), in a place where you had to follow the health code, or be reprimanded by the health inspector. As a result, I am all too acutely aware of the pitfalls and common mistakes that are made. This is the procedure that I observed at the café, to my growing horror: 1) The washer would take a little soap and apply it to the same scrubbing brush that they have been using all along. 2) They wipe the dish or utensil with the scrubbing brush lightly under a little bit of water(temperature unknown). 3) Without rinsing, they hand the dish or utensil off to another person who dries it with a towel(the same towel they have been using for an indeterminate period of time) and then puts it in the rack. I know that if a health inspector from just about any city in the USA saw this, and had authority, he or she would shut that place down immediately. But anarchy reigns in the UK. Eat at your own risk. Here’s a breakdown of the ways that this poor procedure can lead to a risk of causing horrendous illness in the customer: 1) Sponges and brushes are the dirtiest single object in the kitchen. In Massachusetts, where I’m from, they are so strict about this that it is illegal for a restaurant to even keep a sponge in the kitchen. Sponges are filled with bacteria and continue to accumulate it – and no, running it through the dishwasher isn’t going to fix that. Bacteria can continue to grow while in the sponge, and produce toxins that cannot be destroyed using any method at all. These toxins can make you extremely ill. 2) The proper way to clean dishes without a dishwasher requires 5 steps: scrape, soap, rinse, sanitise, and air-dry. You typically need a 3-basin sink to do these steps properly, which is why 3-basin sinks are standard equipment in American commercial kitchens. But not in this café. 3) No rinsing nor sanitising was observed. Sanitising requires the use of either(a) a chemical sanitiser mixed to the proper concentration according to the instructions, or(b) water heated to at least 78 degrees C applied for 30 seconds. Neither of these steps were taken. The purpose of these steps is to reduce the level of pathogens down to a minimum level that just about any human immune system can handle. Even that may not be enough for the very young, the very old, pregnant women, or anyone with a compromised immune system. 4) Drying with a towel of any sort is forbidden for the same reason that use of a sponge is forbidden. But she used the same towel on every utensil and dish that passed through her hands. So, if this café was willing to flaunt their complete disregard for health and food safety right in front of every customer, you can only imagine what goes on behind closed doors.
