Wow, I’m really surprised there is an audience big enough to keep this place open. That’s not a criticism at all, if anything it’s a compliment. Most specialist areas like dance music will be confined to the Internet, which is actually a shame because any new fans will be hard to come by. All things DJ, dance and clubbing exist here. A neat and obviously passionately run shop, the owners know their stuff and aren’t afraid to hide it. I’m more of a ‘Spillers’ man myself, I can understand the Indie/rock scene(I’m certainly not part of it) and really find the urban dance stuff something of a mystery. DJ equipment might be one of the most confusing things in the world for a beginner so if you need to advice, go along to Catapult. Once someone knows their subject inside and out, they’ll give good, sensible advice and won’t trick you into buying something you don’t need, or aren’t ready for. We’re not talking about car salesmen here.

This is a one stop shop for all things Disc Jockey. They offer a vast range of vinyls for various different genres for those inclined towards mixing an’ tha’. My knowledge is fairly basic on the subject of DJing, but those I know who are interested put Catapult on a fairly high pedestal in terms of resources. The staff are specialists, so if you’re a beginner and need some advice then these guys have you covered. As well as records they also have various other accessories; and even t-shirts for someone who wants to pretend they’re a DJ. I find even for those who are a novice like me this is a great shop to have a little browse in.

If you’re a DJ in Cardiff, or a good chunk of South Wales in fact, you will have at the very least heard of Catapult. A stalwart specialist across the mind-boggling echelons of dance music, it was immortalised in film on clubbing movie classic Human Traffic. Over two floors they serve up an intimidating array of dancefloor-moving vinyl, plus other products including tape packs, CDs, clothing and essential DJ equipment from slipmats to headphones. It’s also a great place to head for clubbers looking to get clued up on the latest events in the city and beyond: an overflowing rack of event flyers brought in by local promoters is a goldmine of party information. The majority of the staff are DJs at one level or another themselves, so when they give you advice you can be assured it most likely comes from first-hand experience, and they’re generally some of the most friendly and non-condescending in the business.

Catapult does for Cardiff’s urban dance music fans what Spillers does for indie, rock and alternative fans. It sells CDs and vinyl spanning various genres(house, breaks, hardcore, dubstep, drum & bass, techno, hard dance, urban, etc). It’s a haven for Cardiff’s club DJs, and for anyone who’s really into their club music. If you’re not into clubbing, however, you may feel a bit out of place — or at the very least you’re unlikely to find much in here that you recognise. But if you’re looking for a present for someone and you’re out of your depth, just ask the staff — they are incredibly approachable and go out of their way to help. They also sell DJ equipment, catering for everyone from professional DJs through to home spinners, plus some cool streetwear such as Aerosoul’s Junglist Movement t-shirts and Catapult hoodies, plus record bags and metal boxes.

According to Tiffany M., I’m not a cool kid. Sad, I know. I had never heard of Catapult until I happened to be passing by earlier today and quite literally stumbled across it. So in I went, and was pleasantly surprised to find a well maintained and undoubtedly, and unassumingly, cool shop. Although I felt slightly out of place in my pink flowery dress, I was instantly welcomed by a great guy who asked if I was after anything in particular. admittedly I was a bit dumbfounded, as the music they have on abundance is not generally to my personal taste, so I didn’t recognise any of the artists’ names. But for people who are into(quoting Tiffany here, because I’m unsure!) Dubstep, Drum ‘n’ Bass and Jungle(I really have no idea about that one), this is quite clearly the place to come, as its full to the brim of things I can only imagine are superb examples of their genre. Ahem.

All hail the independent music shop. In a world where gems like this are dying out it’s refreshing to see somewhere like Catapult still going strong. Cardiff is blessed with Spillers which satisfies the indie/rock/electronica fans but for folks who are into the harder stuff the Catapult is your best bet. Probably best described as ‘Urban’ you’ll find Dubstep, Drum n’ Bass and Jungle amongst other things. There’s a massive range of top quality DJ equipment that gives me a headache just looking at it. So many buttons… but for the technically challenged folk like me there are gorgeous skull candy headphones and various other goodies that will enhance your listening experience not to mention a tone of vinyl and cd’s which cover just about ever niche and specialty. All the cool kids go to Catapult.

What a great find in Cardiff, you don’t need to go to Zavvi/HMV to find good music, this shop has an immense collection of undergound music. From Hip Hop to Drum and Bass you can find stuff there that you usually don’t find anywhere else. They pride themselves to be a supplier to all your vinyl needs and they actually do that pretty well, they have a plethora of vinyl on the basement and loads of equipment(fairly priced) on the ground floor. If you want to learn how to be a DJ go there and ask some advice, most of them are quite friendly, with some odd balls. You can also find a lot of information on Cardiff music scene on their flyer wall. And this is a good place if you want some Hip Hop styled baseball caps, you just have to enter and look up and you will see a big lot of them for you to pick and choose.

This is a dance music shop, and while the sign outside says 100% vinyl, it isn’t– there are plenty of CDs on sale as well as DJ equipment and other bits and pieces. What it is, though, is 100% dance music. The music’s arranged by genre, but when you look a bit closer they’re maybe not as arranged as you first think. They’ve got a wide selection of house and trance, and a decent but not amazing selection of breaks & beats, experimental, minimal, etc. It’s a tiny bit pricey, you could definitely shop around and find a lot of things a bit cheaper, but it’s a convenient one-stop-shop for DJs and wannabe DJs.
