I don’t always go out of my way to write a review, but this shop is definitely worth it! Besides having delicious cuts of locally-sourced meat at a fantastic price, the service is phenomenal. I cannot rave enough about how much I adore the guys at Pring– they’re attentive, kind, and remember the little things. Yes, you CAN buy just 2 slices of bacon if that’s all you need for breakfast. No more buying in mass, leaving a lot of food to go bad :( If you’re around Cathays, make sure you pop in. PROTIP: They have special marinades, when buying something like chicken pieces, ask them for a marinade– thereby saving you a step. Genius.

Ahhh, butchers. It takes me back to shopping trips with my grandmother, these places do. There’d be a monumental trek up Cathedral Road that would seem to take weeks, but knowing my grandmother’s hatred for physical exertion, probably only took an hour or so. We’d maybe stop into a café for egg and chips and my nan would, of course, know the owner. We’d go to a couple of pound shops. Not to look about, mind you. But because my nan wanted very specific things from there. And then, before heading to the bus stop, we’d go to the butchers«to pick up something for our tea». That was the routine. And now that I’m an adult myself, I can’t help but smile whenever I dive in to grab a steak«for my tea». Of course, that smile also comes from the fact that in this particular butcher, it’s not uncommon to see the meat cut right in front of you if you go at the right time of the day. There’s something visceral and satisfying about watching your food being sliced up right in front of you. It’s like being primal by proxy. And the prices on top of this… they’re just the greatest thing ever. Buying a steak big enough to beat a man to death with for pocket change gives an immense amount of satisfaction. And then heading back to the cave with a hunk of meat over your shoulder? You feel like a hunter. What’s not to love?

In times past, if we needed meat we would go to the butcher ask him for exactly what we wanted and each cut would have that personal touch as the local butcher would know exactly where the meat has come from, he may well know the farmer personally and is aware how that farmer has farmed his stock. Now a days with supermarkets we get our meat at a standard price and we have no idea where the meat has come from, who farmed the animal and what kind of life the animal had. I would suggest everyone this visit this family run, butchers for roughly the same price as what you would get a Tesco I bought two chicken breasts that were bigger in size than the supermarket ‘value’ chicken and seemed to juicy when I cooked them. This has now been a complete revelation for me and I’m going to continue to by my meat from this place — next stop the baker and the milkman.

You don’t get too many family butchers to the pound nowadays, which pretty much guarantees a decent customer base from the off. The queue often seen running out of the door at D Pring may make you question whether rationing has been reintroduced, but they betray that meaty masters are at work here. Not every cut is displayed, but if you’re searching for something specific just ask the knowledgeable staff and they’ll likely reappear from out the back seconds later clutching what you need. Best of all the prices make Tesco look like Selfridges, especially if you’re going for less prime products like ribs or wings. Vegetarians can probably jog along, naturally.

I went here recently to pick up some BBQ items some sausages & burgers. The quality of the meat is top notch and they have a wide variety of flavoured sausages and beef burgers. The taste of D Prings products are truly awesome if you wanna impress people with your BBQ skills half the battles in selecting the right meat. The queues are quickly serviced so you don’t have to wait long. The butchers were friendly enough and the price was very good I go there whenever I want a good BBQ selection. The best cuts are always available so if you want it just ask, they’ll come back with a great steak. I had 8 ¼ pounders and 12 sausages for just over £5 that’s great value for money.

Its great having a local butchers, now that the one on Albany Road closed this is the nearest one to that area in Roath. I’ve always found really good deals here and they have been happy to help with any requests i’ve had — like sausages with no gluten in them. They are really friendly and they do get really busy on the weekends.

It’s great having local butchers to shop at — I’m very lucky to have Prings so close to where I live. It’s very much a standard butchers, it’s not one of your posher Penarth butchers with shiny counters and posh awnings but is just a ‘does what it says on the tin’ shop. Great choice of meats — particularly good sausages. Service is fantastic for a shop that always has a big queue — they are speedy, friendly and a bit of a laugh. Prices are very reasonable and I find I often save money just buying the meat I want at a butchers rather that at a supermarket. My only complaint which stops me rating it a 5 is that some of the meat is often still frozen which is useless if you want to cook it that day. Also I once asked them to mince me some pork and they said the mincer was too big to do just a pound. I expect a butcher to be willing to cut meat or dress meat the way you ask and be keen to offer you the service you want. All in all though I’d definitely recommend shopping here, a great example of a good local business.
