I’m not the biggest fan of Chinese food and Evergreen is no exception quite frankly everyone is right when they say all the ‘usual suspects are there’ indeed they are there’s nothing spectacular about them. The service was good and the restaurant itself is lovely but there’s nothing exciting or new about it. Granted it is a Chinese takeaway and that’s all the more reason to give it three stars it is just a Chinese takeaway. I normally order the Kung Po Chicken(although I would do this in any Chinese restaurant) it was still very tasty.

So, I tend to split chinese takeaways into two categories; brown and colourful. Brown chinese food is the thick, very salty chinese takeaway food that tends to be in a brown sauce and is what you want to eat when you’re really hungover, or just want to stuff your face. Colourful chinese is the sort that is fresh and light and has lots of vegetables in it and is a bit more, well, chinese I suppose. Evergreen is a colourful chinese — much lighter and in my mind, more flavoursome. The shop front looks like it should really be a restaurant, and the interior is big enough. There are some lovely large fish tanks to watch while you wait on the comfy sofas. It is all very sumptuous. The service is usually swift and food lovely. All the usual suspects are there, with a few house specialities. It is just sad that we always seem to be the only ones in there. If you’re in the area, check it out.

Evergreen Chinese Takeaway offers Cantonese and Peking style Chinese dishes which includes all the usual suspects. In a lot of respects this takeaway is similar to Happy House just a little way up the Albany Road, with very few differences in pricing, style or menu choices. This is not a criticism. I like the happy House takeaway, and so somewhat inevitably I like this one as well! I patronise them both, and I hope that you will as well. Because sadly, there’s another thing that they share in common; although they work incredibly hard and keep standards just as high as ever, they have seen a drop off in business over the last couple of years. It seems to be the fate of many of the takeaways in Cardiff! May be this is why they have put so many money plants in the window? The Chinese consider these plants to be bringers of wealth, and to place them in such a position of prominence is the Feng Shui equivalent of posting a billboard sized declaration on the digital read-outs in Times Square in New York, petitioning the Universe to look favourably upon them by bringing them prosperity and good health. I hope it works!
