This place is tiny. not enough seats etc at gigs and probably get more people showing to gigs if they don’t charge at the door. Hate that they serve beer cans. sorry but I wouldn’t drink from a can at home no mind paying extra for it when out. I expect bottles. Drinks are always nicer from glass bottles

Hipster, organic and relaxed, Gwdihw(pronounced«goody-hoo») was the perfect spot to feed our hangovers. The menu is small(read«tiny») but lovely, offering a few paninis, dahl or lentil stew. I had the Dahl, which was delicious and warming(although a potent recipe for a rather windy arse!). It seems there is a well-stocked bar with a range or speciality beers. When I return to Cardiff, I’ll almost certainly be returning to Gwdihw.

This is Gwdihw and this is one cool bar. I had not discovered this bar until a friend of mine was running a night here called ‘Fat CIty’, which has now been replaced by ‘Far Out’. The venue was so cosy, it might have seemed this way as it was so busy that I was bottom touching with my fellow revellers, but it had a cosy, warm living room feel to it with it’s lamps and comfy furniture. They serve a limited drink selection here, but they also serve up snacks, which is always a good thing when drinking. Outside you will find the cutest little undercover seating area with sofas and fairy lights. This area is a blessing when you are getting a little too warm in the throng of writhing bodies grooving the night away. The décor here is super funk and the atmosphere is a delight, I really enjoy it here and they put on some pretty good music events.

If I ran a bar I would like to achieve what they achieve at this bar. It’s warm cosy, welcoming and they have lots of things going on. You can watch a film, a recital or just sit kick back and watch a bnit of live, music. It’s not a huge place so sometimes you can be stucki for a seat but once you get one i guarantee you’ll come back.

I had my birthday party in Gwdihw last night. Amazing. Just amazing. Its a cute little place, all a bit eccentric and quirky. Lots of ‘retro’ type accoutrement, odd furniture, a stage and a proper looking DJ booth. Outside is a really cute little seating area, covered, all a bit inside outside with heaters and a leather sofa. Did I mention it was a little? It is small, but perfectly formed. The tiny little bar really gives the impression of a homely, friendly place where the staff are part of the party. As a party venue it is great. Right in town, so central for everyone, but not too much ‘in town’ for a weekend. Its kind of a bit out the way as well, round a corner, so you only really get people who meant to go there. It is cute and cosy. I find there is nothing worse than organising a party in a cavernous venue and then remembering you only invited 30 people. Gwdihw had enough space to have various ‘areas’ but then was small enough that everyone mingled and it looked busy. And the best thing? Well, it is free to book for a party — you do have to pay a deposit, but then you get it back when you actually have a party — the staff are all really helpful and friendly. I had live bands, and they helped get everything sorted. If you’ve got an event coming up, you could do a lot worse!

Question: What do you call a place that serves Peroni and brownies, looks like your crazy aunt’s front room and doesn’t quite have enough chairs? Answer: Gwdihw of course(go with the pronunciation«good –ee-huw» and you won’t be too far off it). Gwdihw recently went through a slight refurbishment, removing the glass display cabinet by the till(and it seems the wasabi peas, the gits) and putting in a raised area by the window and DJ booth. I was utterly confounded by why anyone would close a place for a week just to raise part of the floor by a foot. It was then pointed out to me that it was a stage. Aah. While Gwdihw can seem a bit self-consciously quirky, it does host the fabulous monthly multimedia quiz«Quiz Quest», which usually happens on the third Monday of the month. Prizes include a homemade cake with your winning team name iced on the top and some quality tat. We walked away with 3D puzzle of a Wild West supplies store a few months back. No cask ales, Grolsch clocks in at £2.75, Peroni is a little bit more but plenty of Welsh bottled ciders in the fridges. There’s usually a copy of The Guardian floating round and there’s a partially covered smoking area out back. If you fancy a change from most of the bars in the city centre, Gwdihw is worth hunting out.

Gwidhw Gwdihw where was Cardiff before it had you? Well in a mire of a thousand bloody great big soulless chain bars that’s where! The bar named after the owl squashed between masonic lodge and Thai restaurant is a narrow wooden space, home to a continental and trendy crowd. Wasabi peanuts line the bar. This is the place to dance and meet cool folk. Nights sometime spill out into the car-park, which boasts an outdoor living room, time sensitive heaters and arm chairs. Peches Mignon host of a thousand mini festivals and resident promoter turns grey carpark festival green, spreads carpet over the tarmac, knocks up a stage and sprinkles lights and decorations about to create an intimate minifest of the highest order. Nights have included a number of themed micro festivals including the great ‘Bijou Festival’ and the funky ‘Folk-Discothèque’.

Gwdihw is special! And it’s not just coz of the way they spell ‘owl’! And no, it wasn’t created by a bunch of dyslexics… that’s how you spell ‘owl’ in Welsh! But, being a dyslexic myself, I wish, just a little bit, that they had decided to keep it simple… hey ho… at least there’s a vowel in there for me to cling onto! I am beginning to love this place… and so is everybody else. It is one of Cardiff’s most inventive nightspots, and so iI guess it’s somewhat inevitable! What makes it such a special place is that it always has something good to offer. I’ve seen films here, listened to recitals as well as live music and I’m impressed with the sheer amount of energy that goes into keeping this place fresh. These guys deserve to succeed in a big way for what they are clearly so good at. Having said that, it looks like this may already be a fête accompli as I’ve never been here when there hasn’t been a sizable crowd with me!

Quirky Gwdihw(‘Owl’) café bar, located near the railway line and opposite the Atrium University, has some rather striking paintwork that makes it hard to miss — in bright orange and brown. It’s a small and quirky venue attracting a young, arty, trendy crowd and offering cheap drinks and live entertainment — including music from DJs, bands and individual musicians, and even spoken word evenings and indie film screenings. There is not a great deal of seating, but the atmosphere is intimate and friendly, and on live music nights it can be quite lively. Another bonus is that the drinks are cheap, and there’s a menu of fairly wholesome food on offer, including interesting salads, casseroles, and tapas style snacks such as olives, as well as a choice of desserts.

I’m starting to think the mark of a good new bar in Cardiff is bunting. Gwdihw(pronounced ‘goody-huw’, meaning ‘owl’) has bunting. It also has plenty of orange paint and a lot of quirky owl-related items incorporated into the arty décor. Bands, DJs and regular ‘Ukulele Strummers’ nights entertain the young laidback crowds. Like all in-the-know music venues in the city they sell Red Stripe by the can(£2.75). Grolsch and Peroni are on tap, and Guinness and cider come from the fridge. On the night I attend a high quality poetry slam is taking place, complete with an indoor BBQ(Welsh summer weather had forced a relocation). As well as hot dogs and burgers the café bar serves up tasty looking salads, stews, bowls of olives, as well as cakes and brownies. On better Welsh weather days the partially covered garden area is sure to be a winner location. I like. Twit, twoo.

We had a party here last year and it was a really good place to host it. Its just like being in a house party but you don’t have to worry about everyone ruining your home. Its quite small with lots of cosy sofa’s and a small dance area. The bar is probably more cut out to be a café counter, beers are in bottles, they only have a small selection of spirits. They also have a little eating area and made us a very delicious spread of food including really good spicy homemade chilli. There is also a small outside area at the back for the smokers. It was great to have a party somewhere small enough that no one gets lost. I can’t imagine what it’s like on any other night but i’m sure you’d get a warm welcome. They do lots of gigs so worth checking out over the summer.

Gw Di Hw(don’t ask me how to pronounce it) is right opposite the Atrium University. I’ve disappointedly have only ever visited it twice. The first time was a cult cinema get together from uni and the other was to showcase my short film, thanks for asking. Not that anything came from it but it was the last thing I did before graduating and that end of an era will always be a special moment for me. Consisting of an area at the front with couches and the bar at the back with two tables, it isn’t the biggest place in the world but is wonderfully personal. Gw Di Hw often holds events here such as bands, DJ sets and if you ask nicely they will do film nights using their projector for you. This is whats great about the place, they are so accommodating at all times and really friendly. More importantly they have a great selection of cider and have yet to try the cloudier than Wales in January half pinter they do there. The food is wonderful here also. I normally just have a bowl of mixed olives but they will do sandwiches, baguettes etc for you, all with great presentation and fresh ingredients.

This venue really has it all and it’s refreshing to find a place in Cardiff where there is always something on. There’s a vibrant mix of live music, DJ’s and even book launches. There’s also a quiz, so brownie points from me because I’ll go literally anywhere with a quiz. When I visited for lunch I had the«Gwdihw Sexy Salad» which comes with a choice of accompaniments, being a veggie I opted for the roast veg and hummus which I can confirm was very tasty. Very quick service but I suppose it was just a salad and excellent value for money as it came in just under £6. Bargain.
