This is a great little café in the heart of Canton. It’s definately a cut above the usual fare on offer in this part of town. It’s always nice and cosy even on a cold day and the staff are really friendly. The only drawbacks are the yellow colour on the outside — is saffron actually that colour? And the step to get in and out of the place. I’ve stubbed my toe on there a few times. It always has a nice buzz in there and lots of locals go in there for a catch-up so you can always overhear bits of conversation whilst you’re pretending to read your paper. I always used to go for the jacket potato’s which were fab. The coffee is also great which is a plus and they do a lot of food deals so it’s not too expensive. Good toilets which are clean and easy to find.

Saffron is one of the nicest greasy spoon café’s I’ve found in Cardiff. The outside is fairly average but the inside is clean and welcoming and has that local-café charm that you only find in established and well-run places. I’m a big fan of the full English breakfast and the version on offer here does not disappoint, and comes with a lovely large mug of tea to boot. The rest of the menu is nice and varied so if you’re not a fussy eater then there’s likely to be something for you. The staff are friendly enough too and the service is good and prompt. There are plenty of tables but most of them only have two seats. Some have four but if you’re coming with a party bigger than that then you may find sitting together tricky, especially at busy times. This is a no-frills kind of place but that’s exactly what you want from a greasy spoon — good no-nonsense food that’ll fill you up and keep you going, and Saffron does just that.

Once in a while you need to pig out on a traditional unhealthy full Welsh(or English) breakfast and this will normally be after an unhealthy night on the town. You will probably regret it but hey life is full of regrets and as far as they go this is a forgivable regret. If you happen to be in the Canton area of Cardiff then you could do a lot worse than pop into Saffron Café(I assume its named after somebody because I can’t see them using the worlds most expensive spice on their cooking). It has all you’re looking for in a traditional greasy spoon. Big portions, large mugs of tea and its located on the corner of 2 streets so its ideal for people watching. I don’t frequent cafes that often but if I was forced to be a regular at one then I’d choose this one as it clean, welcoming and very reasonable priced. My partner, at the time, was a vegetarian and even her veggie meal looked very palatable and thats coming from a staunch meat eater.

This cheap and cheerful Canton café serves up generous portions of cooked breakfasts that will keep you going all day. It’s a triangular wedge of a place just on the corner of Cowbridge Road East and Leckwith Road, in the heart of Canton’s shopping area. It’s not much of a beauty from the outside, but inside it’s kept clean and the atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious. They do a well-regarded veggie breakfast as well as belly-busting feasts for meat-eaters, so everyone’s happy(except those like me who loathe cooked breakfasts, but I realise I’m in a minority). For lunches, they do classic simple café fare, with something for pretty much everyone. Saffron isn’t the trendiest of places to stop for a coffee in Canton — head over to Chapter if you’re after style or healthy food — but it’s centrally located and enduringly popular with locals. Even though this place isn’t my cup of tea, I’m giving it three stars because I think it does what it does well, and deserves it.

I have literally just come back from having a vegetarian cooked breakfast and very nice it was too. It’s nice and clean and well appointed and the staff were friendly and served us from the table. The food was pretty good as compared to other similar café type fare and so for these reasons I’m happy to recommend it!

Saffron is a great café to wile away a morning in if you find yourself in the Canton area. The food is cheap and cheerful with quite large portions for the price. The breakfasts fill you up all day. But the main reason I find to go to Saffron is simply to people watch. Its triangular shape means that there are people walking past on two sides. And anyone from Canton will know there are lots of characters about town. The staff are efficient and friendly. This place is a great stop pop in for a bite to eat, or to slowly recover from the morning after the night before.
