I like the Romilly but I never think to go there. I’m generally convinced that there aren’t any decent pubs in Cardiff when I fancy a country pub. But of course, The Romilly! It has all the trappings of a proper pub — mismatched upholstery, a barman unafraid of banter, locals who chat to you while you order, low lights and everything! I used to go for the pub quiz on a Monday night. Great fun. However, I got the feeling that it was a bit of a locals thing and the same team always seemed to win. And seemed to know the person asking the questions… I’m assuming it was just a community thing. It is a bit of a demon of a quiz and not for the faint hearted, but a perfectly pleasant way to spend a Monday evening in Canton.

This is the closest you will get to a country pub within a 10 minute walk to Cardiff city centre. It has that pokey olde worlde look, feel and smell to it. The bar area tends to attract regulars(who seemed friendly enough) and the lounge area tends to attract families especially on the weekends. It has a south facing garden which is a nice place to have a pint of cider of a summer evening. The have been awarded the Cask Marque for the quality of their beers it also has a few screens to watch sport on, regular quiz nights and there’s a well used darts board too. So if you want to pretend you’re having a pint in the country without the bother of going to the country put on your wellies and try this pub.

There are so many pubs in the Canton area, you’d think someone would think to invent a kind of game where people troop from one pub to the next, having a drink at each one. Hey, wait a minute… The Romilly is pleasant and friendly, in the same way you might expect any of these establishments to be. This pub is particularly child and family friendly, however(as the lovely Anna seems to have discovered), and it’s common to see big groups of people of all ages sitting around outside. The conservatory area is what makes this pub perhaps a little bit different, as it can be a great place to sit when it’s clear, yet cold, outside. It’s nice to have a temperature regulated environment in which to enjoy the benefits of both inside and out. With our Welsh weather, we all know we need it!

A real haven within the city suburbs, this has a really traditional feel and a big garden and conservatory area. The last time I was there was during the weekend and I had to move because there were children annoying me! But I guess thats no bad thing as there doesn’t seem to be many places around that are child friendly these days. There’s also plenty of men typically gathered around TV’s showing sport. It reminded me of the good old days when my parents used to take us to the pub on a Sunday afternoon and we’d run around the garden while my dad got drunk. Good times.
