The Taf is so much better than many student union bars, it is cleaner and better looked after and still looks relatively new. During the day a good little pub to get a bite to eat and relax with your friends, the prices are easily affordable(even for poor student folk) and the big screens offer plenty of entertainment. All the usual pub fun is here to be had; pool tables, quiz machines, et all. Oh how you must be careful not to get addicted to quiz machine hangman at university, my dissertation nearly wasn’t finished and my rent nearly wasn’t paid because of that game. They should ban it, or at least offer advice from ex-hangman addicts. I still have nightmares about it. Anyway… the evening sees the Taf get pretty busy, and at the top of a lot of steps, try not to cause any trouble, because there’s only one way down if the bouncers throw you out.

By day, a cheap and cheerful little restaurant where you can get a Pepsi and burger for a couple of quid or sneak in a quick pint before the afternoon’s lectures; by night, an absolutely packed bar crammed to the rafters with large groups of people in fancy dress which empties just before Solus starts charging. If you’re not coming out with your entire football team/seminar group/block in Talybont then this probably isn’t the place to visit. You’ll never be able to get to the bar, and will be unlikely to meet any new people. Most people out will be frantically trying to catch up with everyone in their group before the affordability of the drinks gets a tad too overwhelming. Think of it as a kind of living room prelash for those in small house. The offers on here are next to ridiculous so you will inevitably drink much more than you planned. There is also a cash-point placed conveniently by the door but, don’t worry, with prices like these you’re unlikely to need it. URBANCHALLENGE: Spot someone dressed as Lara Croft

This is a student pub that forms a part of the Student Union complex of Cardiff University. It can be found up the main stairs of the outside of the Union building. It’s a large, open pub that is often a good level of busy, mainly because of its cheap drink and meal prices. The meals it serves are of a pretty good quality considering their really low prices, and they’ll certainly be a vast improvement on most things that students consume. The pub offers a pool table and pub quiz machine, and is a great place to grab a beer and socialise as well as being in a prime location to have a few drinks before heading into town. If you’re a student at the University then most of this will go without saying as you will obviously be dragged along there by various friends and sports teams throughout Fresher’s week to ensure you continue to visit it.

I’m totally in love with the Taf, Cardiff Union’s student bar. Being a student for the past 3 years has definitely aided this burning desire to drink there as much as I can for many reasons. Firstly, it’s incredibly cheap, they often have special nights or offers on where you can get a pint for as cheap as a pound. There was many a night you could go out and come back home with change from the tenner you took out with you. This establishment has recently started serving food as well, serving such dishes as lasagne and burgers, you’re standard away from home grub for a busy student. The décor is that of a quaint pub with mood lighting and plenty of IT boxes for you to quiz away with your mates. Remember, this place is students only unless you can get signed in by a student, or quit that job and go get that degree you’ve always wanted so you can experience the wonder that is the Taf.

The Taf is normally the place that people go before the club nights at Solus — because then you’re more likely to get a ticket! However, I think that it is defintiely worth more than that. An afternoon drink in the Taf, before heading over to the park, on a sunny day in one of the loveliest things to do. The Taf also hosts a really fun night on a Thursday where the bar becomes a stock exchange. The prices of drinks varies all night — if lots of people are ordering vodka and coke, the price of vodka and coke goes up. If people start to realise this and drink vodka and lemonade, THAT will go but vodka and coke will go down! It’s great fun — especially when there’s a crash in the market and everyone rushes for the particular drink that’s selling for 99p!
