A decent brains pub that was serving one of their beers that I hadn’t seen before, called Merlin’s Oak(from Welsh folklore When Merlin’s tree should tumble down then shall fall Carmarthen Town. Tumbled down rather nicely too, as I watched the football). Just away from the centre of Cardiff, not bad.

Stood at the convergence point of the city centre, Riverside, Canton and(just about) Pontcanna, The Westgate accordingly draws a little of its character from at least three of those aforementioned areas. A mainstream city pub with hints of Riverside and Canton’s rough-round-the-edges charm, there’s scant pretension here: the pub grub is straightforward and cheap and the drinks pretty much follow suit. Sky Sports big screen action pulls the punters in and it’s actually one of the better pubs within striking distance of the city centre to catch big match football or rugby with pint in hand, without feeling as though everything might kick off at any minute. It’s close enough to the Millennium Stadium that it’s standing room only on match days. Although since the Football League play-offs moved back from Cardiff to Wembley, it’s lost an enjoyably special several-times-a-year atmosphere when fans of lower league teams converged on the pub.

The Westgate is one of the better traditional drinking establishments in the city centre, what I like to call an «ol’ timers’ pub» — quintessentially British and charmingly unassuming. There’s not much to distinguish from other watering holes in Cardiff, apart from the fact that you don’t have to fear the possibility of a stabbing or a riot, which is always welcomed. For me, the best aspect of The Westgate is the massive, outdoor smoking area, complete with shelters and heaters, so you can still enjoy your cigarette even during a mid-winter downpour. Prices here are quite reasonable, making it an ideal haunt for a late afternoon session with your mates. Sport enthusiasts will enjoy watching the games broadcast on one of the many screens positioned around the place.

You can spot a Brain’s pub a mile off in Cardiff. The Westgate with its red brickwork and hanging baskets is a classic Brains affair. A decent pub at that perfect halfway point between the train station and Chapter for the walkers/staggerers amongst you. I like it as a pit stop, I also used to conduct quite a lot of Kruger Mag business here, as Kruger HQ used to be around the corner. The pub allows kids because it serves food, but I’ve rarely seen any little people running about in there. More often there is a match on and lots of heads pointing towards the various big screens about the place. Still, on that front, they show both rugby and football and I’ve never seen any trouble. It is most popular with City fans, but also other locals and students. The atmosphere is more often quietly jovial. It has a pleasant horse shoe bar. Cask Beers are available and they clearly know how to clean their lines. A decent no-frills place.

The Westgate has everything you could want in a pub and more. It’s only ten minutes from the hustle and bustle of the cenrte of Cardiff yet feels like another world entirely. The bar itself is very open and inviting with lots of drinks on special offer. The menu is great value for money and there are always great promotions on. Large screen TVs shows sports for locals and newcomers alike, but without any deafening noise. There are cosy high level booths to huddle into and big leather sofas too. Entertainment-wise they have a pool table and darts board, and to liven up the evenings they often put have DJ sets and theme nights for special occasions. Since my last visit they have converted the rear of the pub into a courtyard style beer garden which I can’t wait to try out.

This is a proper pub one of a dying breed, you can get a decent pint a great value bite to eat and a pleasant friendly atmosphere. With a dart board and pool table it is a brilliant place for a quiet afternoon get together and on rugby weekend it is sure to be kicking. When I go here I know I am home.
