Went here last night and got a bucket of chicken pieces and chips for £6 between two of us. You really can’t complain. Really good barbecue sauce came with it and both myself and my boyfriend felt very content after eating. Varsity is of a good size and others time I have been it is always quite busy. Either people watching the football or supporting their friends in the karaōke. Good place to relax after work and get cheap drinks and decent cheap food.

I recently visited here for a 21st birthday party. We had free champagne and food but it was karaōke night so my experience was dampened slightly. The low point of the night was Summer Lovin’ from Grease which had replaced all the lyrics with dirty alternatives. So class was certainly not in abundance here. It’s a studenty place with cheap drinks and shots deals to match. It’s very big with lots of seating and a large covered smoking area, but I would definitely avoid unless you’re looking to get very drunk very quickly as I did. Although that did make it a little more bearable.

This particular Varsity bar is situated at the top of Richmond road which will attract mainly students living in Roath. It won’t get as busy as your town centre Varsity, which is much nicer I think. I think I quite like Varsity’s sometimes, I think this is mainly in the daytime though. I have been here to eat in the daytime and have enjoyed the food, it’s super cheap which is great. They do some of their food out of dog bowls, now this is a little weird I realize, I have yet to order one as have considered feeling mildly embarrassed about eating off of this strange plate substitute. Now the night time, this is where the score gets lowered for me, I’m not a fan of this place at night, it gets a lot busier with people desperate for the cheap booze. They do massive fish bowl sized drinks where several of you can get around it and drink out of the same receptacle, delightful. It’s alright, I just think there are better places on City road to go to.

This Varsity is far more laid-back than the branch you find along Greyfriars, which suffers as a result of being sat right next to a couple of Cardiff’s most rowdy nightclubs. The Richmond Road Varsity is still a lively venue with reasonable bar and food prices(even cheaper if you pick up a ‘V’ card), but it’s more student-orientated than its sister branch. They sometimes host live music and open mic nights showcasing local bands and musicians, but it’s also a handy stop on route to the city centre for many students living in Roath, so you can sup a pint before you head into town a bit later. The food is served up in generous portions, and seems quite popular among its dominant student clientèle — but it’s fairly unhealthy and nothing very special, so and I’d only bother going there for drinks.

To be remembered and savoured, Varsity aptly named to reflect the student population that make up the majority of its customers. The bar has so many things going for it. Going out can be a difficult if you just want a less frantic time of it. What Varsity has to offer is good modern seating and regular open mic nights and live bands, which make for a very entertaining mixture. They don’t really have a dance floor but it really isn’t that sort of a bar, If you want to go out for good conversation good drinks and plenty of good food Varsity stacks up nicely. Get yourself a V card and make savings on purchases, also students get in on the drink offers. I lived in the albany area and would be going here more often if I was still there. It’s also a good place to start a pub crawl as It’s prominently located. Food is reasonable but it I would choose elsewhere for food, it better setup for a drinking binge than a gastronomic feast. Try some of the interesting flavours down city road instead.

This Varsity is living, breathing proof that the chain isn’t necessarily the hive of scum and villainy that the sister bar on Greyfriars Road would have you believe. Whilst the Greyfriars one is over run with that special breed of person who thinks every bottle of WKD comes with a license to leer and fight, the Richmond Road Varsity is squatting just off the side of studentville, Cardiff and so enjoys a slightly happier clientele. This bar is fully aware of how studenty it really is, and so it caters to that particular breed. They have frequent drinks offers across most brands on the bar, with extra deals and money off to owners of the V card. On top of this, the food is huge and excellent(they serve BUCKETS of food; that’s never a bad thing). Also, the bar has live music and open mic nights occasionally, with local bands coming in and entertaining the surrounding area. They don’t have much of a stage, or a dancefloor, but it makes for a great backdrop to the evening’s proceedings.

Varsity is an appropriately named student nightspot in the Roath /Cathays area of Cardiff. It would be fair to say that this little corner, where City Road meets Albany Road is student heaven. Varsity is only a stones throw from The Royal George, a Scream student pub since 1996, and there’s Student Services, a student accommodation specialist, just across the road from this. Also sharing the Student Services premises is Accessory World, a mobile and laptop servicing shop, with another computer and mobile specialist practically facing it… So, there’s practically everything a student could need within a 30 second walk! Varsity is a little bit more upmarket than The George, and is just as popular. It offers the usual food; burgers, pizza, jacket potatoes, sarnies and wraps, as well as a few added extras like nachos. Drinks are reasonably priced, and if you are a V card carrying regular, they are even cheaper. Live sport is available on screen, just as it is at The George.

(I feel as though I’ve liked almost everything that I have reviewed today — I must be in a very good mood. Really I think it’s because I’m trying to put myself in a positive frame of mind for all the essays that I have to be doing for university. Blurgh.) I do think that Varsity actually does deserve four stars, though. Honest, scout’s honour! We came here for some food and a couple of drinks and found both aspects of the experience enjoyable. However, I am going to say that I would have preferred it to be just a little bit quieter because it was sometimes I little hard to hear our conversation. The prices are really good and there is a really good range of food, especially for vegetarians. The drinks were cheap as well and all served quickly and cold. I like that you can eat and let it settle and then move straight on to having a couple of drinks. I also like how the staff weren’t too attentive without ignoring us. Brilliant.

not bad place to watch the footie, food is typical of this type of establishment and always reminds me i’m not that bad a cook. Pool tables, dart boards and a dance floor. Can’t really go wrong
