Standard Weatherspoons food and good(cheap) beer. Good atmosphere for 6 nations — plenty of screens with commentary on.

Enjoyed a joyous brekko here pre-Chester races last May. Served by a most hospitable tall, moustachioed gent. Myself and my chum both plumped for the ‘fat boy breakfast’ as I think it is called, at around the fiver mark, with a brew thrown in. The sizzling sausages and what seemed like a bottomless plate of bacon rashers were done to a tee, however yer can stick yer mushrooms up yer trumpet. A decent array of guest ales were available, their exact names escape me, but one was named after Emmanuel Frimpong as I recall. The quiz machine is a bottom end one, not a single question relating to epoxy resin, a real bugbear of mine. Placepots and naps of the day were also completed ‘in house’ and if this is what you want from a public house(it’s definitely what I want), then this establishment is the grandaddy of them all. For information purposes, the placepot went down the pan(4 legs out of 6 in) and the nap trailed in second. Balls.

this pub is on love street just off Foregate. Just around the corner from the other jdw, The Square Bottle. However this seems to be the better decorated of the two. outside, has the appearance of a large city house, with stone stairway leading up to the entrance. To the side of the building there is a first-floor outdoor balcony structure for smokers, etc. inside, there is an upper floor bar, with open plan seating and a small built-in disco setup. downstairs is quieter and much more plush, furnished more like an expensive hotel than a pub, with sofa seating, etc. Not quite sure if there is also a bar down there. there were 8 hand pumps in the upper bar, 6 in use with regional ales. we tried the meals, which were standard for jdw pubs. quite a smart establishment, with the standard jdw drink & meal offerings. As a more senior drinker, the prospect of the disco in full swing put me off a little,. However it wasn’t in use when we called. A nice place for a comfortable quiet drink … on non-disco nights! However its a great place for a night out although can get very busy and it does take a while to get served
