Auchentoshan Distillery

First whisky distillery experience and it was glorious! Our tour guide was crazy knowledgeable and kind (shoutout to my boy Jeremy). We ended up staying for the «Tantalizing Tasting» (P.S. Wicked name, and only 15 quid for a lot of good whisky) just to hang out with our fun tour guide. For 6£ you can’t beat it, especially since you get to taste a whisky! Definitely recommend it. Also easy to get to from Kilpatrick station, which is nice.

Great tour for £6. Walk through production area. Greta tour guide. Nice tasting at end of 12 year American Oak scotch — smooth — and dessert cream liqueur.

An absolutely amazing experience. The tour was nice and informative, and the scotch tasting was very we’ll done and offered a good amount and variety. A must if you are ever in the Glasgow area.

It’s not the longest tour but it is informative and fun, plus you get to try some sample whisky’s at the end in their bar area, my favourite part :)

Took my grandpa along and we had a great time (and a couple of delicious drams) on the Auchentoshan Distillery tour. Didn’t realize I had been living so close to this place for so many years. A top day out for whisky lovers, and those newly discovering the joy of the ‘water of life,’ alike.

Wonderfully knowledgeable staff, very good, mild, whisky and reasonable bottles for purchase. An easy train + taxi ride from Glasgow, too.

In Schottland wollten wir uns natürlich auch eine Whisky-​Brennerei
ansehen, das gehörte für uns zum Urlaub dazu. In unserer Nähe befanden sich
zwei Brennereien. Wir entschieden uns für Auchentoshan. Der Beschreibung nach
gab es für etwas weniger Eintritt mehr geboten und den Whisky erst zum
Schluss, nicht am Anfang der Tour. Nach einigem Suchen fanden wir die Zufahrt zur Brennerei. Sie geht
direkt von der Hauptstraße aus Richtung Glasgow ab. In 15 Minuten, um 13.00 h,
sollte die nächste Führung stattfinden. Obwohl es ein Wochentag mittags war,
fanden sich einige Teilnehmer für die Führung. Wir waren die einzigen
Deutschen. Die freundliche Dame, die später die Tour führte, fragte, woher wir
kämen. Auf unsere Antwort hin gab sie uns ausführliche Unterlagen in deutscher
Sprache. Es waren Fotokopien mit Informationen zur Brennerei, den einzelnen
Stationen der Führung und zur Whiskyherstellung. Sehr informativ; wir durften
sie mitnehmen. Es war gestattet, Fotos (keine Filmaufnahmen) zu machen. Mit einer
Ausnahme: im Lager, durch das wir (erstaunlicherweise) geführt wurden, durfte
nicht fotografiert werden. Die Tour begann in der Mälzerei, wo wir die Maschinen in Aktion
bewundern konnten. Danach kamen wir zu den Maischbottichen und dem Gärraum.
Überall durften wir einen kurzen Blick hineinwerfen. Der interessanteste Teil
(neben der Whiskyprobe natürlich) war für mich die Destillation. Als einzige
Brennerei in Schottland destilliert Auchentoshan sämtliche Whiskysorten
dreifach; üblich ist die zweifache Destillation. Ich stand fasziniert in dem
Raum mit den drei Brennblasen, die in Betrieb waren. Zum Abschluss der Führung
gingen wir durch das Lager. Wobei ich mir nicht sicher bin, ob es das einzige
Lager der Brennerei ist. Es war nicht versiegelt, nur verschlossen. Angeblich
käme der Zoll öfters vorbei, um die Vorräte zu überprüfen. Wie dem auch sei. Die Tour endete in der Bar, wo jeder einen Whisky nach Geschmack
erhielt. Sämtliche Auchentoshan-​Whiskies sind, wie betont wurde, ungetorft. Das
kommt meinem Geschmack sehr entgegen, und ich hatte die Qual der Wahl, was ich
denn nun probieren sollte. Natürlich gibt es auch den üblichen Shop. Alle von der Brennerei
produzierten Whiskysorten sind erhältlich. Das lohnte sich für uns nicht, da
die Flaschen deutlich teurer waren als in Deutschland. Wir erstanden ein paar Kleinigkeiten
wie Gläser, einen Schlüsselanhänger und Whiskykekse (was es nicht alles gibt). Insgesamt hat uns die Tour gut gefallen. Für sechs
Pfund Eintritt wurden wir eine Stunde durch die Brennerei geführt; inkl. der Whiskyprobe.
Wer in der Gegend ist und eine Brennerei besichtigen möchte, kann es hier
versuchen.

Totally jumping on the lovely Annie L’s bandwagon here, but oh my goodness — Auchentoshan Distillery began my love affair with whisky. Okay, so Grant’s did have a hand in the process by teaching me at a whisky tasting that downing it or gulping it was a sure fire way to hate it, and armed with this knowledge (hold it in your mouth for the same number of seconds as the years the whisky is old) I attended the tour of this place with gusto. Ooh, how excited I was!
Learning about how whisky’s made — the raw materials, the fermentation process, the attack on the nose when you stick your head in the the tank… seriously, you won’t know it until you’ve experienced it — was fascinating. Auchentoshan provided us with a tour guide who seriously knew her whisky. She explained about the four areas of Scotland from which whisky hails and the differences in taste, and seeing the barrels all stored up was something to behold.
But the best part of course was the tasting at the end, and we were treated in the cosy comforts of the distillery to a lovely 12 year old single malt, which Andreas R and myself enjoyed so much that we very quickly purchased a bottle each to take home. Yes, Vienna and Manchester are far cooler now that they both have Auchentoshan-​drinking CMs.
If you’re up for doing something different, educational *and* fun in Glasgow with added alcohol, do give this a go. These Glaswegians know what they’re doing…

If you find yourself in Glasgow visiting or indeed if you are a local you really should make the short trip out of the city centre to here.
Excellent tour that pours shame on our Jameson tour. This is a live distillery so it was fantastic to experience a functioning business and the steps and history behind the production of this mellow whiskey.
My only complaint is that machines are very loud so it was difficult at times to hear our tour guide so be sure to get up close to him/​her, they won’t be creeped out or maybe they will be who cares you have paid for the experience.
At the end of the tour we got to relax in the bar and have a whiskey, it really was a lovely end to a great week in a very cool city!

Couldn’t agree more. I got dragged along to Auchentoshan in 2008. It wasn’t a whisky I knew particularly and I’d done any number of distillery tours before so my enthusiasm levels were somewhere below microscopic.
And, wouldn’t you know it, the people were lovely, the stories were fascinating, the new visitor centre was beautifully laid out and the whisky — the only Scottish single malt to be triple distilled, dontyouknow — is as smooth as a baby’s nether bits and absolutely beautiful. I now regularly wear my Auchentoshan baseball cap with considerable pride.
Actually, on second thoughts I should hate the place. It’s cost me quite a lot in whisky purchases since…
