Methuen Arms Hotel

Food was extremely good when a had lunch, so decided to go back that evening with my wife. Again food and hospitality were excellent. Some may say pricey, but I always say «you get what you pay for». Excellence.

Wow! I visited in the second week after the Methuen Arms re-​opened. We arrived at seven in the evening, without a reservation.
As it was a cold winter’s evening, we sat down near the window and warmed-​up next to the open-​fire. We went through to the restaurant area for dinner, just after seven and ordered our food. The main dishes cost between £15 and £20 and vegetarian options were available. The service was good and the staff polite. Our meals arrived within a comfortable time period and we were delighted by the quality.
Shortly after this, probably just after seven thirty, the place was almost full. We chatted for a while and then decided to share a ‘cheese and biscuits’ platter between us. The cheeses were delightful and the biscuits were all home made. ‘Proper’ puddings (for the ladies?) were available and from memory, I think there was a choice of approximately five. They looked exquisite, judging by what we saw on other tables.
For two main meals, a good sized platter to share and two drinks each, the price was £67. Not something most of us could do every night, but to have something like this in Bath would be a delight, but to have it in Corsham is superb. The first hotel rooms will be available in spring (2011) and I think the establishment will be a ‘run-​away’ success.
I would recommend this most highly and if you are thinking it’s a little pricey, try to find the extra money and go for it. Dressing-​up isn’t necessary, but the people that had booked tables (not us), looked like they had made an effort, the gentlemen in shirts or shirts and jackets and the ladies in something sparkly/​dressy.
The management also have a good attitude to heavy drinkers, basically this is a restaurant that serves beer in a small pre-​dinner bar, so if you are looking for somewhere to swear and get drunk, wander else-​where.
A larger private dining area was also available, so that looks promising for people who want to organize work ‘do’s’ or something for a club/​society/​Lodge.
I’m a cider drinker and Thatcher’s Gold was ‘on-​tap’. I’d have preferred to see Stowford, but this was not a big issue.
