Since going gluten AND dairy free, dining out has become more of a chore than a treat. Thankfully, a friend chose Karnavar as the place to celebrate her husband’s birthday with a group of friends.
It was absolutely packed at 830 on a Saturday — even on week nights I’ve heard you can’t just stroll in and expect a seat anytime soon.
To start I had the pumpkin and coconut soup (£7) and the server was more than happy to double check it was indeed dairy/gluten free. It was so unbelievably good, too. My entrée was the chicken briyani (£12) which was pretty good but felt like it lacked the pineapple and raisins mentioned on the menu.
Nearly everyone else at the table got the smoked lamb loin (Lamb Handi Ka Sula, £17) not just for the taste but the presentation. It comes out covered by a tall glass lid (like a bell jar) and a waft of thick smoke comes out. It is seriously smokey too, like a campfire.
I heard this place is trying for a Michelin star and I’m not surprised. The service was spot on, the food delicious and creative. This is definitely a place for special occasions and don’t forget to make a reservation.

The food here is absolutely delicious. Everything we had was so lovely and that included the taste I had of my friends’ food. Not your normal Indian restaurant, you wont find chicken tikka, more fusion food, is the only way i can describe it. The staff are really nice and helpful and basically if you can get yourself in there then do. Booking is essential!!!

Karnavar offers a Indian food with a modern twist! Don’t expect just the traditional! There is a very broad selection of meat, including chicken, duck, prawns, salmon, sea bass, and even beef, in addition to the vegetarian dishes. The flavors are not overpowering but delicately balanced, and the presentation is carefully arranged.
The venue is small and easy to miss behind some temporary street construction in Croydon, but the atmosphere is clean and classy.
