I came across Culross Abbey when on way to the Western Isles and it did not disappoint. I heard that the place of Culross village was used as a film location background for the new hit TV series«OUTLANDER» that was filmed in Bonny Scotland, so I checked out the lovely wee town and all that it had to offer. There is not so much to see, but after a short walk along the seaside promenade we made our way up to the Abbey(slightly hilly). When we arrived, the Abbey itself was closed, but it did not hinder us to walk the grounds, conquer a very steep staircase to gain entry to a certain high up view point, make our way to the backside and slip through some not so open gates to the grave yard at the back of the Abbey. The oldest grave I could find was from 1735 and it had a skull on it. People still contemplate about the meaning of a skull on a gravestone. The graveyard is really old and mystic. Somehow you get the feeling you are transported back in time when making your way through the overgrown parts of this grave yard. The whole place is very clean and some house date back before 1650. The Abbey and the Village and the Palace are well worth the visit!
