When my best friend’s grandfather died she was inconsolable. She rang me on the phone and told me and I quickly came over to try and sort her out. My friend is not really very Jewish but her grandfather was and she wanted to get some sort of candle to light for him. She asked me to take her to get one. I had no idea where so we first went to Golder’s Green. No candle. Nothing open. Then we went to Edgware on a tip to Mendys, where they had a tribute candle for 99p. She tearfully bought it, lit it, did the whole thing. I just ordered the takeaway and tried to be the supportive friend while she cried.
