Ruby Rouge

My first time at Ruby Rouge was good in some ways but terrible in others. I got a really bad haircut but really great highlights. My long hair was layered and a fringe was cut, but the layers are absolutely awful it’s like a mullet and does nothing for my hair type. However, I do have abnormally thick hair and I did get the feeling that the stylist was inexperienced with hair like mine. I’m a student, but was refused the student discount and made to pay an extra £15 as I do have thick hair and it took longer than usual. All in all, I paid £100 for a cut and dark copper highlights which, for a salon that seems quite cheap on first impression, was a lot more than I might pay elsewhere considering the quality of the cut. My sister had a similar thing done (and hers was much nicer) for £45.

Went to Ruby Rouge for a cut and colour this week, although the hairdresser was patient in helping me decide what to go for in terms of colour, I’m very, very unhappy with the cut.
I opted for a cut and highlights a shade lighter than my natural colour — so no bleaching involved. This cost me £100 — I was refused the student discount on the price list, even after showing my student ID, as my hair is thick. I was charged an extra £15 for the same reason. Although it did take quite a while, I came out very unhappy with the cut. Throughout the cut, the hairdresser kept making mentions of how thick my hair was, and although I am fine with that — it made me wonder if they were inexperienced in cutting thick hair. Upon looking at it now, I realise this is evident. I would like to point out that I do have wavy hair, but even when straightened within an inch of its life the layers do not work with my hair at all and make me look like a womble.
The layers are absolutely horrendous — I wish I had the vocabulary to describe it — its more a mullet than the photo of Kim Kardashian I brought in.
My sister had the same thing done for £45 — the cut and colour — in another salon and hers is of far higher quality, which says a lot.
I am however, happy with the colour! If only it didnt cost me 30% more than it would anyone else.

Lovely people here. Never had a cut but had my hair dyed three times two of those worked out really well, the third sadly didn’t but I’m not sure they could have predicted the results and they did try and fix it for free (though it didn’t really work which is a shame.)
I wish they had more magazines as sometimes it feels a bit dim and sparse in there nevertheless they are friendly and as long as you don’t have really problematic hair you can rely on getting a good service.

In my search for the perfect bikini-​waxing experience, I visited Ruby Rouge and was quite excited at how cheap they were! I remember most of their waxing jobs being under £10, but was disappointed to learn that two of my friends had been there with less than satisfactory results to report. A bikini wax isn’t something you «try out and see for yourself» so I promptly continued my search elsewhere. They are worth a mention though, because the staff were so friendly, and if you ever need something done and are cash-​strapped, they’re the best priced I’ve seen in Edinburgh. I did head back there with a friend who she got her eyebrows threaded and she did tell me she wasn’t too pleased with the results either. I get the feeling Ruby Rouge will do the job adequately, but if you want top-​notch results, pay a little more at the near by Hot Head, or Mode.

I’m going to have to disagree with the previous review as I loved my experience at Ruby Rouge hairdressers. Ruby Rouge is situated in the Newington area of Edinburgh, so it is in a prime location for students to pop into to get their haircut.
I have only had my hair cut at Ruby Rouge once as I initially thought it was too expensive for what I had done, but I have since been to several other hairdressers in the same area of Edinburgh and have realised that Ruby Rouge offer a pretty good deal. Ruby Rouge offer student discounts and it costs £24 for a cut and blow dry. My hairdresser was really chatty and spent a long time with me going over precisely what it was I wanted which was encouraging and I was very impressed with the overall result. The hairdresser sprayed lots of product on my hair so it felt soft and smooth for days after wards and I didn’t have to keep to constantly brushing it — ideal!
Ruby Rouge are now open late on a Wednesday and Thursday which is extremely handy for those working late. The service I received was excellent and after experience the other hairdresser stores in Edinburgh, this is one of my favourites so I will definitely be going back.

Overpriced.
This salon is ok; they cut my hair, made small-​talk with me and tried to get me to buy all of their various products. But let’s be honest, that describes pretty much any salon you’ve ever been to. The difference is, even with student discount I paid nearly twice what I pay to get the same thing done in the salon in Harvey Nicks.
Also, I felt really self-​conscious because the staff all just stare at you, and don’t even try to hide the fact that they’re talking about you amongst themselves.
Don’t get me wrong, they did cut my hair well. But for the price I paid I would have expected nothing less. Aside from that, there is really anything else on the things-​that-​are-​good-​about-​it list.

Relaxed, friendly service. Easy going staff, coolm modern small salon. Great haircut x2!

With red and black décor this stylish salon not only looks good but does a good cut. Student rates at 24 pounds for a cut and blow dry are definitely a bargain for your buck. I was very pleased with my haircut!
