There are many things here that can’t be found anywhere else in Edinburgh. If you like Turkish and Balkan food, this place is a godsend. Some things are a bit pricey, though, that’s why only 4 stars.

One of my favorite markets since Akdeniz is open late, always has fresh and cheap produce, and the family that runs the place is incredibly nice. There’s a bakery in the back where all the pastries and bread is made fresh each late night/morning. There’s nothing like a big stack of Turkish bread for a quid, and it’s always fluffy and sometimes even warm. My flatmate once had to leave me a key, and the Akdeniz staff was happy to hold onto it until I could get there that evening. Also, largest onions I have ever seen are sold here, certainly enough for three big meals of cooking.

As far as Turkish and Asian speciality shops go this one is a little larger and brighter. Akdeniz apparently means Mediterranean in Turkish. They do not have a website or facebook page. They sell your run of the mill Turkish delicatessens: Harissa, tahini, exotic juices, olives, peppers, baklava and spices. Apart from that they have a fresh produce section, separate halal butcher’s and tobacco products. Even though they are larger some of the stuff you expect to find are not there, there is no chili oil /paste selection, no real soya sauces and they are low on the noodle soups. OKOK they are not an Asian supermarket, but I was expecting some. They accept debit & credit cards, but you need a minimum of £10 spend to pay with that. Fair enough I’d say, and as they are very cheap you end up with a lot of produce to make up to the £10. They are very friendly and will give you a hand finding what you are looking for(providing they stock it). I will visit here again.
