A family-name business, Johns the baker has been on it’s present site for at least thirty years. I recall briefly working there on a Saturday job back when I was a teenager. On a cold morning, the aroma of freshly baked bread from the oven buildings just across the alley behind the shop was irresistable. Johns still sells a variety of different loaves and will slice them for you then and there upon request. There is a good selection of tempting cakes, and a small food bar where you can order a filled roll to be made up in front of you from fresh rolls of choice and a good variety of fillings. Prices are very reasonable and the quality is always very good indeed, all with that home-made taste. Their pies and pastry goods are also very delectable, and I can heartily reccomend the roast chicken & gravy pie!
