A couple of weeks after moving to Shawlands and I still hadn’t found a decent drinking establishment that wasn’t full of certain kinds of people. Enticed by a review on Unilocal about the 2−4−1 pizzas myself, my girlfriend and two visiting friends visited Bier Stube South and were all pleasantly surprised. Bier Stube offers a good range of beers, and the pizzas are great. Other food-stuffs are available, but when the pizzas are this good AND2−4−1 then there’s no option really! The interior is a bit grubby, we had a discussion about whether this was intentional(my view) or wear-and-tear that hadn’t been bothered to be repaired(the girlfriend’s view), but either way it doesn’t distract from the place. I fully intend to become a regular at Bier Stube over the coming months, for both the beer and the pizza!

Having recently reviewed Republic Bier Halle, I thought it was only fair to give its Southside equivalent a rundown. On the face of it, the two are incredibly similar-I’m not 100% sure of the relationship; BierStube never appears in the same listing or emails as its city centre cousins, but they share the same ethos. Benches, décor and 2for1 pizzas! Recently, I’ve found this place to be on the slide a bit — the range of beer has shrunk to 30% of its former glory(no more Weihenstephan, Schoffehofer or Strawberry beer) and the general demeanour is becoming a bit grubby. Happily, BierStube still does a decent selection of wines, the pizzas are still great and the atmosphere is as laid back and cool as it has always been. One bonus is the quiz night — Tuesday nights are well busy and the quiz nights are really good fun. BierStube then — on the slide, but still pretty good. All the owners need to do to restore this place to its former greatness is clean up the décor(clean up in general!), get some decent beers back in and SORTTHETOILETS(manky!)

Brilliant beers and 2 for 1 pizzas. Well worth a visit

I don’t really like drinking in dark pubs with electronic lounge jazz but hey, there is a special secret in the Bierstube… PIZZAS! You just can’t beat them. They taste brilliant and come in at a very reasonable price. 2 for 1 anyone? I wouldn’t be too interested in coming here for a night out although, Shawlands has become a great area for nightlife over the past few years and I would encourage you to drop by on your pub crawl. Lunches? Definitely!

The Bierstube in Shawlands is a spin off of the iconic Bier Hall pubs in the city centre. It’s actually pretty good. My boyfriend surprisingly was happy about its the lack of beers since he doesn’t get bogged down trying to choose some obscure Thai lager like he often does the Bier Hall in town. You can just sit and chat and eat in the rather pleasant atmosphere. It’s rather dark in here, and as usual with Bier Halls the music is bizarre — sometimes in a good way, sometimes not so good. The famous 2 for 1 Pizza deal runs here, so all in all it’s a good place to be. Oh I want some pizza now.

It’s a little dark and foreboding, but this Bier Stube is one of then best pubs in Shawlands. The food is excellent and there are usually two for one pizza offers. It attracts a younger crowd than most Shawlands pubs, but isn’t a youth pub. It has cool music, at a reasonable volume, and plenty of seating. Most of the diners seem to be couples who have been together long enough not to have to show off to each other, but haven’t descended into mutual antagonism. It has a good range of beers and spirits, but this pub doubles as a café during the day, even having some interesting teas from the Tchai Ovna stable. Week nights are busy enough to give it some atmosphere without being hectic: all round, one to avoid the crowds but still feel at the centre of Shawlands.

This is definitely in the Bierhalle mould(same prices for pizzas and 2−4−1) with quite a few various bottles of beer and draughts to choose from. if you want a smirnoff ice you won’t find one here, I checked! The quiz on Tuesdays is pretty cool and is free to enter. There are also some pretty hot waitresses and the service is friendly and efficient. Pizzas were really nice thin base and I would recommend this place to anyone(however the drinks are pretty pricey, so no neds please!).

Contrary to what doomsayers are harking The Stube has cracking 2−4−1 pizzas that are so great they are imitated all over the city. Half price! But some folk are never happy… It might have a bit of a draft and no soap in the gents from time to time though what it does have is an atmosphere that is funky, safe and frequently imitated but not often bettered in Shawlands. Best time to grab a bite to eat is Tuesday night 8.30pm when you can also win a cash prize or a case of beer at my fun pub quiz — full details at ! I might be annoying at first, I have to agree with that, but I hope in time you’ll grow to tolerate me.
