This one of my favourite places in Glasgow! It has two of my favourite things bargains and fabric! It’s nestled away in what I like to call the«Cash and Carry» district. It’s not too far from the city centre or public transport but it is far enough for it not be absolutely swamped. The area can look a little scary on first appearance but I’ve never had any trouble and most of the surrounding buildings are big warehouse type structures so there’s not many people and let’s face it, the street could be boiling lava and I’d still find a way to get to the treasure trove that is the Cotton Print Factory Shop!!! There is three glorious floors of Fabrics of all different kinds. I spend most of my time on the top floor were all the sparkles and«costumey» fabrics are. The fabric is stacked and grouped together by type rather than colour which I prefer and the staff are pretty good at knowing were everything is. The staff are really helpful, there’s a really friendly vibe and they are all pretty knowledgeable, I sometimes feel a little uncomfortable when I need a lot of something and the staff ask me question about what I’m making and if I need this or that and in all honestly I usually do not have a clue what they mean as I literally make things up as I go along with sewing. I often think people tend to go for sell, sell, sell in fabric shops. Not in The Cotton Print Factory Shop the staff will have a chat about what your making and ask if you have everything. have you tried etc and have actually save me a little money on more than one occasion rather than just trying to stack things on to what I have. I sometimes wish that they had a bigger selection in bright colours or fabrics and I know this sounds strange but the lighting is pretty dull upstairs so sometimes it’s hard to get the full impact. They have some amazing fabrics which can get lost because the lighting is so dull. When I was last in I found the most gorgeous gold fabric with Geisha girls on but I wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t take time to examine it due to where it had been placed. I’d also like to see them stock a bigger range of extras such as zips and trims, they do have them but you have to ask, and again the staff are happy to point you in the right directions of other places. There a great knitting section also. All in all I adore this place there’s always a bargain especially just after Christmas and not to mention there free complimentary tea and coffee for those of you who need to be refuelled after the excitement of it all or those friend dragged along to make sure that the buyer doesn’t go home with the whole shop! They also have good parking for those drivers amongst you.

I was looking for materials for a wolf costume(don’t ask), and ventured to the wild and windy trading streets near Shields Road Subway, to see if the CPFS(that’s Cotton Print Factory Shop to you) could save me from traipsing into town. Well, South Side fabric hunters, be reassured — this is indeed your fabric Mecca, as Devin M. accurately described it! As it happens, I was actually looking for the ‘mince’ fabric on the top floor, or rather the more cheap and cheerful crafting fabrics like coloured poly cottons, fake fur, felt and other shiny things that are a bit too blingy for grown up curtains and cushions, but are perfect for kids’ décor or fancy dress costumes. To be fair to the last reviewer, I think their stock in this area has been expanding recently(for example, the introduction of fat quarters for patchwork etc.). so I’d probably upgrade that ‘mince’ to ‘eclectic’! They certainly had some fun printed cottons and Chinese-styled satins that distracted me from the task at hand. The range of heavier upholstery fabrics on the bottom two floors is vast as well, and what sticks out across the whole three floors out is the sheer choice, the range of colour choices, and the very competitive prices. I also have to say that all of the staff are absolutely lovely. I must have had four or five different bales of fabric to get small snippets from, and nothing was too much trouble or too little a quantity. I didn’t try the coffee shop, but I liked the idea — there’s little in the surrounding area, so I will probably be very tempted by an additional treat the next time I visit. Because there will be a next time! The only small niggle that I have is that it would be nice to see CPFS carry a few more ‘extras’ other than curtain tie-backs. It would be great to be able to pick up crafting odds and sods like stuffing, eyes and all the other things that rival stores carry. I’m sure they must have had threads and even buttons somewhere, but I don’t remember seeing them! The store does seem to be more geared toward upholstery than dressmaking at the moment, but for anyone looking for choice and cheap fabrics, it’s a must-visit. It’s definitely my first port of call for fabric now.

How have I not been to this fabric Mecca before now?! Three floors of lovely fabric(okay, two floors of lovely fabric and one floor of mince — ascend the stairs at your peril!) and it’s all for home décor! I was in recently to look for curtain fabric and just to have a nosey. My previous impression of Cotton Print was that it’s only for roll-ends and offcuts, so I was very surprised to find that it’s a well-stocked shop full of perfectly good fabric. As I mentioned above, there are three floors of fabric and it’s all home dec. You enter on the ground level, which is sort of in the middle in terms of quality. The posh stuff is in the basement and the mince for furnishing uni flats and dodgy rentals is upstairs. On the main floor, there’s a little café where you can get a free cup of coffee or tea to enjoy while you rest your feet and look through their little library of design books. There is a small amount of haberdashery, wallpaper and coordinating cushions on offer, but the main focus is the fabric. I’d strongly recommend it for those inclined toward DIY home décor. We’re about to move house, so the chance that you’ll see me perusing the rolls at Cotton Print Factory Shop are pretty good these days.
