I had heard a lot about Cubatas but had never figured out where it was. After reading the mixed reviews for Rioja my friend and I went exploring and found it hidden away somewhere between Charing Cross and Finnieston. When you eventually find it you can’t miss it though with it’s luminous green frontage. The first thing that struck me when I went in was how big the space was but how at the same time it felt quite intimate despite only being a quarter full. The first customer service gold star went to the waitress who asked if she could take my coat, I was so taken aback I stumbled over my reply of yes please. We order a couple of suitably Spanish themed drinks, being a weekday after work I went for a dry cider of which the name escapes me but it was very nice. Before we ordered the waitress got a second gold star when she asked if any of us had any allergies. I eat out a fair bit and I cannot remember the last time anyone asked that, well played! Everything looked great but eventually we settled on six tapas to share between us as part of deal we found on the always useful 5pm website. Everything arrived swiftly and was very good with particular shout outs to the Pork Cheeks in Red Wine, Turkey Albondigas and the Cheeseboard(comprising of cheeses actually from Spain which often isn’t the case). The deal also included an ice cream dessert, I’m not a big ice cream fan but with frozen berries and toffee this too was lovely sweet delight to finish of the meal. I had a glass(for glass read vat) of Sangria, served to the brim in a large wince that was nice but maybe didn’t quite hit the heights the food did. As it was a school night I resisted a sherry but was pleased to see a wide variety of options behind the bar. Overall, great service, great food, lovely atmosphere and a fish tank(that my friend was fascinated by). Get yourself down Elderslie Street and give it a try.

A wee review update and still a very strong 5 stars from me! Cubatas is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Glasgow, I’ve now had countless meals here and enjoyed exceptional food and friendly, attentive service each time. We often take our little boy with us and they are so lovely to him, I order him a couple of dishes as soon as we arrive and these are brought out not long after we have him settled in his highchair and our drinks have arrived. It’s brilliant as food keeps him occupied and we can relax and enjoy our food too. I force myself to order some dishes I haven’t tried before — it’s so easy to stick with the ones I have tried and I LOVE — and each time I discover another mouth watering dish. One of my new favourites is the pork cheek, melt in the mouth, jam packed full of flavour and so moreish. Added to some regular favourites such as the spicy prawns, paella, patatas bravas and their delicious salad dishes and you get a wonderfully varied meal. My top tip is to order a basket of bread for the table, the sauces and oils that accompany the dishes are divine and I love mopping them up with a chunk of soft fluffy bread. It’s great going to Cubatas in a big group, with people who are happy sharing. My ideal would be to go and order one of everything off the menu, heaven :) These guys also do gift vouchers, I know as I bought my mum and dad some for Christmas. We’ve taken them for dinner here a few times and they love it!

I’m usually not a massive tapas person, I’ve left feeling like I could still eat and unsatisfied before. Cubatas has changed my opinion though! I couldn’t even begin to describe every dish as we ordered A LOT. The most memorable however was the chorizo wrapped in pastry(forgive me, my Spanish is non existent but they had the English translation!), the fried cheese with a cranberry chutney and the paella. I really enjoyed all of these and wish I didn’t have to share them! As far as tapas goes the portions are really generous. After the main I was ridiculously full/satisfied but we had to order dessert to share to see if it was as good! Again we got quite a few and put them in the middle of the table to share.(Tapas style dessert? Why not!) My favourite was the tirimasu. It tasted like it had chocolate chunks throughout it — what’s not to like?! We also got a jug of both the white and red sangria to try. Someone said they were too sweet but I loved it. Could of got accidently really tipsy on that without meaning to, easily done when it tastes so good! Would definitely recommend trying it, it’s a really nice place to go with a big group or with family!

Tapas can be hit and miss, often over priced and terribly small in portion size. Even the tastiest doses of tapas can come with a few disappointing dishes. — What I love about Cubatas is that every single tapas mouthful is a glorious, satisfying one; everything I’ve tried here is delicious, with authentic and full Spanish flavours. Portion size is generous too and there’s quite a few options for if you’re sharing. Lots of tasty vegetarian bites too, and several can be made vegan also. So, dinner at Cubatas is best shared. Order lots and you’ll be presented with an amazing feast. — You won’t be disappointed! Service is really great too; welcoming and friendly. I most definitely wouldn’t be embarrassed to ask if they could make any changes to any dishes as they seem really accommodating. Quite literally EVERYTHING is awesome, but here’s a few dishes which stood out to me and I recommend: — Fried almonds with herbs — Deep fried white bait and squid — Patatas bravas You cannot have tapas without the infamous wonder nugget that is the Bravas, and Cubatas serve wonderful Patas Bravas. Also, I really wish that I could order a tonne of those heavenly fried almonds. — Order a portion for a one way ticket to spiced nut heaven.

I love a review update especially when I get to give that luscious fifth star to such an awesome business. I’ve been to Cubatas many times now, and tried a lot of different dishes. Before I recommend certain ones, I will say the set menu is an awesome option if you’re not sure what to get — you get 10 dishes(which serves about 3 people, or two really hungry people) for £37.95 which is great value. The have a meat and veggie option, and the veggie option can be adapted to have some dishes as vegan if needed. Ok, onto my favourite dishes: — Almendras fritas are fried almond with herbs. You’ll end up fighting over these, they are just SO good. Really delicious and addictive. Don’t blame me if you scoff the whole bowl. We’ve all done it. — Croquettes. Ok, I’ll admit — I love croquettes anyway but these ones are amazing. Chicken and ham filling and they are perfectly cooked like little nuggets of heaven. — Paella. To be honest, I would rarely order this at a Spanish restaurant as I think most places don’t do it justice. Cubatas really do and I think it’s one of their specialities. I’ve tried nearly every version they have(vegetable, chicken, black rice and seafood) and they have all been amazing. Of course this dish will take a little while so be patient. — Queso frito. Fried cheese with marmalade. Again, a dish you’ll be fighting over! The marmalade is essential to cut through the fried cheese and it just works perfectly. I’ve tried a lot more than these dishes but for now, these are the ones that really stand out in my mind. Cubatas do change the menu from time to time so there are always some special dishes on to try. The staff are all super helpful and friendly, so they can recommend something if you really aren’t sure. (Note: they now do delivery via Deliveroo, and I believe you can contact them directly for takeaway/collection orders)

After a hard afternoon drinking at the gym and watching other people do physical challenges(yes you read that right) I thought it was important for me to stock up on my calories and where better to go that the chorizo and tapas wonderland that is cubatas. This place is really nice inside and the staff are very welcoming. I am not a huge fan of tapas normally but I really liked this place. I was dining with six other people and we decide to share a variety of dishes, some were amazing, some were just good, but everything was nice. Favourite dishes. Spanish sausage rolls — pastry and chorizo. Awesome! Divine deep fried cheese. Amazing garlic prawns. Delicious Moroccan kebabs. Great cheesy nachos. Brilliant patatas bravas. The list goes on and on and on. Just about everything was amazing. The only thing that was slightly blander than I expected was the paella, but I would certainly give it another try. To finish we ended with a sharing platter of 6 desserts. Out of the six I loved 5. Cream brûlée, honey cake, cheese cake, Tiramisu and one I can’t remember now. :-s — the only one I was not so keen on was the walnut cake. What a great meal. Indulgent and rich food that would in my opinion wow any diner. A real well deserved 4 stars. I will be back!

Well what do you do after working out? Stuff your face uncontrollably until it hurts to breathe! I love this feeling, I am full equals happiness. Let’s start with Bread which couldn’t be any fresher. Roasted almonds and nachos. The nachos were different served up with BBQ rather than salsa, this might actually be a new thing for me. The great thing about tapas is that you can order everything and everyone just shares. Pataas Bravas, marrocon kebabs, fired cheese, chorizo in pastry… Yes pastry! Prawns in garlic, fajitas, A pork dish, chicken with a batter and colorful sauce, meatballs and a massive paella, I’m sure there has been a few dishes I’ve missed. Feeling full yet? A tapas of deserts oh my goodness. A baileys cheese cake, check! Crème brûlée…check something that tastes of butterscotch. Tiramisu ooofffft! Some other spongy thing and a walnut cake. Man I’ve just re lived this experience… so good! Staff friendly and great food make this my perfect match!

I’ve eaten at the restaurant once and had takeaway(via Deliveroo) once. My favorite is the crispy chicken, which is gluten free and comes with three different tasty sauces. Other dishes we liked were patatas bravas and a spinach dish. Not gluten free but a fave of my vegetarian friends was the eggplant dish. A few of their dishes are a miss; skip the peppers with cheese. Service in the restaurant was also a bit of a miss for me; after asking for the gluteny sauce that comes with the patatas on the side, it was delivered with sauce poured over the potatoes. They quickly remade it but still! I had to go find someone to get the bill at the end of our meal, too. Definitely not a bad place, with lots of tasty dishes. They do clearly label gluten free and vegetarian dishes, so that’s very helpful. I’m likely to try it again.

Being the poor student that I am, I’m always looking out for pocket friendly deals for top quality food. So naturally, when I seen an Itison deal for 5 tapas at Cubatas for £12 I jumped right on it. I’d heard good things about Cubatas and couldn’t wait to try for myself. When we arrived at Cubatas, we advised that we were using our voucher and the staff were more than happy to accommodate this. It seemed to be the night for them as we heard many other customers using theirs as well — obviously a popular deal! As fans of La Tasca(we get to use our Taste Card there!), we are familiar with most tapas dishes. However the menu at Cubatas seemed really authentic and included many options that we haven’t seen elsewhere. We were told that the deal we’d bought actually equated to £24 worth of tapas, and if we selected the cheaper options we could actually end up with 6 or 7 — which is a great feed for £12 for 2 people. We just selected out 5 and opted to choose another one over and above our voucher. We started with the selection of Spanish Meats. Quite often when you use a voucher code, the restaurant will serve smaller portions given that you haven’t paid full price. Not here! We got a huge selection of meats for 2 people and they were absolutely delicious. The Iberico and Salami were cut slightly unevenly which led me to think it was probably hand cut, adding even more to the authenticity of this place. Delicious. The rest of our Tapas selection came out together and we hungrily dug in. The Ham and Chicken croquettes were lovely and came with a little creamy herb dip. To be honest they didn’t have much(if any) chicken or ham in them, but still tasted gorgeous. Next were the Meatballs. They were huge and meaty, in a spicy tomato sauce. We really enjoyed them. All the dishes seemed to come in threes though which meant we were fighting over them! The little Patatas Bravas were like the crispiest small roast potatoes and were so moreish! They came with three different dips. One Garlic Aioli(which I heard the waitress mention was made fresh daily), a spicy tomato dip and a red-pesto type dip. Each one was delicious and went perfectly with the potatoes. The prawns had such cute presentation, in a little mini frying pan. They were served in a chilli and garlic oil and were absolutely huge! They were so juicy and cooked perfectly. Finally we had the Chicken Paella. Served in a steaming bowl it was absolutely perfect. It was sticky and flavoursome and I could have eaten the full portion to myself. Served with a wedge of lemon to squeeze over the top it was filled with chicken, mange tout and butterbeans. I would definitely recommend this to anyone planning a visit. We had originally planned to skip dessert and head over to the newly opened Jelly Bear. However, when the Waitress declared that all the desserts were made in-house, we knew we had to try them. I decided on the Cinnamon Pudding Cake and Martyn with the Chocolate Tart. The chocolate cake was so light and soft, yet so rich with the bitter dark chocolate sauce on top. The presentation was beautiful and inviting, but it was a huge wedge and was impossible to finish. The Cinnamon Pudding Cake was more like a spongy mousse in texture, and was topped with a delicious caramel syrup. If you like cinnamon this is the dessert for you! It was so addictive and finished the meal off beautifully. The Itison deal for this feast was fantastic value, and even though we paid over and above the voucher I would jump at the chance to buy it again. Even if we had chosen the 5 tapas alone, we would still have left completely satisfied. The food is authentic Spanish and it truly shows in the flavours and presentation. We’re already planning our next visit!

Being a tapas lover I have to say the food was here was really really bueno!!! The seafood mix was great, the batter perfectly light and crispy. My favourite dish was probably their morcilla, or maybe the seafood paella, or the peppers with cheese, maybe it was the croquetas… I give in, it was all superb! And that’s not just the Brockman’s Gin talking(who knew it partnered tapas so well?). Seriously good eats, I’ll definitely be back.

4 of us went on a Saturday night. I’m so happy we got to try it on a Saturday as they have a guy playing music which really adds to the atmosphere! We decided to order 6 dishes per couple which was a generous amount of food for hungry people like us. We started with some bread and yummy olives. Here is a run down of the dishes — 1. fried cheese with jam — yum really tasty salty cheese with sweet jam. 2.chorizo in pastry — nice but I wouldn’t get it again, it’s a bit dry, I wish we had gone for the chorizo and egg stew — it looked lovely and I’m still dreaming about it 3. garlic prawns — this was a highlight, when I go back I’m going to get more fish dishes. 4. Chicken paella was fab and next time I’ll get the seafood one. 5.Patatas bravas with garlic and mojo sauces — yum, I can’t have tapas without them, these were lovely chunks of potato. 6. Meatballs in tomato sauce — soooo tasty! I also recommend the tiramisu it was a gorgeous end to a lovely meal. Coffee liqueurs finished off a great dinner with good atmosphere and really lovely friendly staff. We also got a sweet liqueur with our bill. We had a bottle of wine between two and it ended up at £30 per person which is great value for what we got and the quality of the food. I’ll definitely be back to sample more dishes

Despite not being a fan of Tapas and viewing them more as a snack as opposed to a substantial meal, I was pleasantly surprised after my first visit to Cubatas. In fairness I had heard good things about this place, so I thought I should put my prejudices’ aside and give this little spot a try. My first problem arose when I opened the menu to find a myriad of tapas. My mouth instantly started salivating. All the tapas were neatly arranged into different styles; fishy tapas, meaty tapas, chicken-y tapas, veggy tapas and ricey tapas. You get the picture. This helped my selection somewhat, but we had no idea how much to order for the 4 for us. Luckily the lovely waitress suggested ordering about 4 each and so we fired in with the huge order of 18 odd tapas(I have a big belly to fill after all). So, out came the cubes of eggy tortillas, delicious, the crispy fried pastas bravas, substantial, the succulent fish skewers, the wonderfully garlicy oily prawns, the divine(and my favourite) breaded pork lion with Serrano ham, paella and so on and so on. I must be honest, I can’t really recall half the things we ordered as there was so much. I would probably require a photographic memory for that purpose and often I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast. Anyway, its fair to say there was nothing that I did not enjoy. The tapas all came out in their own time, which I liked and it meant we could always fit everything on the table. The waitress would take away the finished dishes as the 18+ orders came rolling out, like a conveyor belt of delicious Spanish food. Mmmmmm, conveyor belt of delicious Spanish food! I also very much enjoyed my rather potent bottle of Alhambra beer with my meal. I was expecting a lager style beer but what I got was a very strong malty beer which complemented the things perfectly. I think it would be fair of me to say that tapas are, by their nature, small plates, so expect to pay a decent price for not too much food. Also don’t expect to be totally stuffed when you walk out. Or maybe that is just my problem? Cubatas is situated on the busy ‘rat run’ of Berkeley Street. Its not the most picturesque of locations and with nothing much else around its unlikely you’d find yourself in this area. But, if you like your tapas or Spanish food you can’t really go wrong with this restaurant. The food was of high quality and brilliantly executed. I think I’m just not a fan of tapas but this place is pretty darn good!

I paid my first visit to Cubatas last night with the lovely Briony and Susan F, after much praise from Pammi G. The interior was really comfortable, and nicely decorated. As for the menu, there was plenty to choose from… We decided to order the Tradicional Set Menu between the 3 of us which had a great variety of classic tapas dishes to savour. My favourites were Paella Valenciana(delicious paella with sautéed chicken and vegetables), the Chorizo Frito En Jeréz(Chorizo in Sherry), the Pinchos Muranos(chicken kebabs marinated in Moroccan spice), and the Patatas Bravas, which were DEE-LICIOUS — super crunchy golden roasted potatoes served with aioli and salsa brava. I wasn’t a huge fan of the salad which came with the set menu — in theory I would have loved it… salad leaves with goats cheese, walnuts and a honey & orange vinaigrette sounds delicious, but I found the salad leaves a bit limp and soggy. Would have been so much better with some fresh crispy salad leaves! We also ordered a couple of extra dishes… I would definitely recommend the Berenjena al Horno(grilled aubergine with goats cheese, tomato & basil), really delicious dish! The Patatas al Gratén(potatoes cooked in the oven with white sauce and cheese) was ok, though to be honest I would go for another helping of Patatas Bravas to share next time over this dish. I was a little disappointed that there were no Pimientos de Padron on the menu, as this is my most favourite tapas dish to order! The restaurant itself was very quiet, but it was a Monday night. I really do hope they are busier the rest of the week, as this was a lovely tapas restaurant that I would be sure to visit again… especially if they add Pimientos de Padron to the menu! :)

Cubatas is off the beaten track and is a fantastic little hidden gem. Glasgow Food Geek very kindly took me here for some tapas after weeks of teasing me with pictures and recommendations! I settled down in the lovely restaurant with a glass of wine and wait on Panmi. The restaurant has a forest/woodland/natural look to it — high ceilings, stone and varnished wood and nice green walls. I was sitting next to the huge window that made the restaurant really bright. They’ll be opening a beer garden soon which I think will be amazing as it’s in such a quiet spot! So, onto the tapas! You know I love me some tapas! The one thing I will say before I start: sweep away the thoughts of tapas you’ve tried elsewhere. The tapas here is traditionally inspired, so despite the names of dishes being familiar, they’ve put their own stamp on them! Patatas Gratinadas — When I’ve ordered this dish before it has been a Spanish twist on dauphinois potatoes in the sense that the sliced potatoes are baked in a ramekin with garlic and cream. These potatoes are cooked in white sauce, topped with cheese and herbs and then baked. This is a basic recipe of the owner’s mother and it’s a really good one! My initial reaction was disappointment as I was expecting a bowl of creamy potatoes, but my finishing reaction was surprise — they were fabulous! Albóndigas con Tomate — Mediterranean home-made meatballs served with tomato sauce which I asked to have served spicy. These were absolutely amazing — by far my favourite part of the meal. They paired with the Patatas Gratinadas like a dream! The meatballs were just so delicious; fresh, well seasoned and well cooked meat. The sauce was very thick and there wasn’t much of it which I really liked — I didn’t want to fish for my meatballs, I wanted to cut them up and eat… and I did! Patatas Bravas — I am the person who says«Nah, I don’t like Patatas Bravas!» and everyone gives me the confused/horrified/‘what’s-your-problem’ faces. I’m not a big fan of tomatoey sauces, and the idea of eating what is essentially cubed potatoes topped with a can of chopped tomatoes really does nothing for me! Luckily, that’s absolutely NOT what Patatas Bravas is here! Here, in this wonderful place, we have spicy paprika coated potatoes(like mini roast potatoes) served with home made all-i-oli and salsa brava. The Patatas Bravas they serve are as they are made in Valencia with the sauces on the sides. They were addictively good! So crispy with a smoky hum of heat and then sauces to dip or not dip as you see fit! Amazing. Cubatas is a bit out of the way — much like Two Fat Ladies — in terms of the city centre as it’s on the other side of the M8. If you’re in the west end or Charing Cross then it’s really easy to get to and I got parked easily on the street outside. I will definitely be back as I thoroughly enjoyed their food and I would urge you to give them a try and see the difference between their food and the chains! If you don’t like Patatas Bravas usually then please try them here — you will not be disappointed! The thing that takes away from their food is presentation — it’s missing a bit of flair for me! I eat with my eyes!

I took Duncan here for his birthday– possibly the only restaurant in Glasgow which he hadn’t visited! Didn’t even had to think about what rating. Fantastic service– very professional and friendly waitress who was efficient without becoming impersonal. I tried sangria for the first time which was(apparently) authentic and gorgeous. The food was amazing– particularly the vegetable paella(another first try). 6 dishes were plenty between two and all cooked to perfection. 6 dishes, 1 beer and a sangria came to just over £30 and was worth every Penny. Very VERY impressed!

Ok so unlike other Unilocalers this was my first visit and I was totally blown away. Emma D and I visited for my birthday and I really cannot find fault in the place. First and foremost the service was impeccable. The staff were awesome seating us half an hour before we had booked. We were served in good time and the food was quick but not too quick when being served. The food itself was amazing bringing back memories of living on the costa brava. Authentic Spanish lager and other drinks. All perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Lots of choice for the vegetarians and carnivores alike. Prices were very reasonable with 6 tapas dishes and a couple of drinks for £30. This place is a little off the beaten track of either the city centre or west end but well worth the trip there.

I feel a bit like Briony here I was sure I had reviewed this Restaurant, we must have had the same dream. Anyhoo went along to celebrate my Daughters birthday there 7 of us in the party and I am sure by the amount of food we had on the table we must have covered most of the menu. Pollo Y Bacon Con Queso(Bacon wraps with chicken and cheese filling) is new to me and was very, delicious! Patatas Bravas(Spicy potatoes served with home-made all-i-oli and salsa brava), patatas gratinadas, and the asparagus with Serrano ham which was cooked to perfection). That is just a sample of what I had, there were clean plates all round and we all had little tastes of other dishes. I had a very tasty beer although I am afraid to say I cannot remember it’s name, some of our party had Rose wine and they all seemed to enjoy it very much. The staff were very attentive without being over familiar, they obviously overheard that was Sharon’s Birthday as they brought her, a large piece of chocolate cake with a candle and sangria and a cocktail which we all shared. I will definitely be back, for more of the same

Being an indecisive soul I had spent days trying to decide where to eat on my birthday before Briony C suggested we go to Cubatas. I LOVE tapas so was keen to try this new offering near Charing Cross. Expectations were high and I’m happy to say the restaurant delivered. There were seven of us there for lunch so we managed to try quite a good proportion of the menu between us. The selection includes many of the tapas staples(chorizo cooked in a variety of ways, patatas bravas and gratinadas, tortilla, meatballs…) as well as a few new and interesting options(I particularly enjoyed the chicken and bacon wraps, and the asparagus with Serrano ham which was cooked to perfection). Everyone enjoyed their selections and even though we ordered quite a lot of dishes there was hardly anything left by the end as no one wanted to waste a morsel. Everything was fresh, tasty and nicely presented, we were particularly enamoured with the tiny frying pans several of the dishes were served in. The staff were the perfect balance of friendly and attentive, which always helps to make a great visit to any restaurant. It was a really nice space too and we were placed next to one of the big front windows so we could enjoy the sunny day. If they hadn’t already had it in the bag the five star rating was really sealed when, having overheard it was my birthday, I was presented with a slice of chocolate cake for dessert and two cocktails, all on the house. It was a really thoughtful surprise and the cocktails were delicious! Needless to say I can’t wait to go back again and will definitely be recommending Cubatas to friends.

Cubatas has a really warm and welcoming décor, when you enter the first thing that hits you is the cool rustic wooden bar, the walls are beautiful original thick stone walls and the floor looked like gorgeous reclaimed tiles. It’s a really has a really relaxed chilled out vibe with plenty of space between the tables so no eavesdropping. The staff were warm, incredibly attentive and genuinely seemed to care that we were enjoying the food. The guy who served us guided us well through the menu and was happy to offer his opinion on the dishes. He explained as he took our order that the dishes wouldn’t come out together but that traditionally with Tapas a few dishes are brought to the table when they are ready, then a few more and at any point if we wanted more of a dish just to ask. None stop food deliveries… I could live with that. We chatted a bit with the guy who it turns out was a part owner he had said that they were having busy days and quite days, usually depending on their current trip advisor ranking(do people still use trip advisor??) So I have kind of taken these guys under my wing a little, as you are about to discover I thought the food was great, the staff were lovely and I think they could be a great success once the word is out. Ok, here we go… food! First to arrive at our table was a generous portion of Morro De Credo(Crunchy Pork fried stripes) this is a dish definitely to avoid if you have dentures, it is so crunchy you can feel it in your brain… I loved it. I would describe it as strips of salty lovely cold pork crackling. Next came Pollo Y Bacon Con Queso(Bacon wraps with chicken and cheese filling.) Utterly delicious! Patatas Bravas(Spicy potatoes served with home-made all-i-oli and salsa brava) The all-i-oli was outrageously good, they make it fresh everyday and boy you can taste it. In this delivery we also got to try the Tortilla Espanola(Spanish traditional onion and potato omelette) we were presented with a big chunk of this tasty tortilla which was soft while still maintaining a little bite from the potato slices. Our last delivery saw a lovely selection of dishes arrive we sampled Pollo a la Cerveza(Creamy chicken cooked in beer following a german recipe) the chicken was perfectly cooked and really flavoursome. Albondigas con Tomate(Mediterranean home-made meatballs served with tomato sauce) these were my favourite dish, the meatballs were meaty, dense and so tasty and the sauce was plentiful and delicious. We also got the Champinones al Ajillo(Pan fried mushrooms with garlic and herbs of Provence) now I don’t like mushrooms so I didn’t eat any but I am assured they were really moreish. We followed this up with 2 made in-house dessert dishes — Arroz con Leche(The spanish version of home-made rice pudding) served cold I could only describe this little glass of citrus infused rice pudding as lush! We also tried the Leche Fritta(Spanish style dessert normally from the north of Spain made by cooking flour with milk and sugar until it thickens) these little fritters were so good, they were a gluttons but light and fluffy I would highly recommend both of these desserts. All in all a fantastic addition to the west end and I think if word spreads they will do really really well, I for one will definitely be a regular customer and be crowing about them if they keep up this standard.

We were on the way the Stand mid-week and so decided to take in this new place. It’s a Spanish tapas restaurant in the area behind the Mitchell library. On entering the place it looks the biz, its very spacious, comfortable and well-lit, and has bare stone walls — and a fish tank, I love fish tanks. It was early on Wednesday evening and there were literally no other diners, so it felt a bit quiet — but it is new, and Wednesday night is Glasgow’s tumbleweed time. The welcome was very friendly and as it mostly is in the city, Spanish, and as you would expect in a deserted restaurant it was very attentive too. A look at the menu, and we saw the usual tapas staples — no beef though — they also have Indian, Japanese, German, Scottish, Mexican and Moroccan options too, the last two I guess I understand, but strange then that they boast of their Spanish tapas bar authenticity on the website. We ordered bread and olives, Pinchos Morunos(Moroccan-spiced chicken skewers), Gambas Al Pilpil(chilli prawns), Albondigas Con Tomate(meatballs in tomato sauce), Chistorras A La Sidra(chorizo in Spanish cider) and Pollo A La Cerveza(chicken cooked in beer — a German recipe!) We started on the bread and olives, the olives were nice, the bread was okay, it was light but nothing special in flavour. The strange thing was the olive oil and balsamic mix, it was served in a deep dish. I know now that this doesn’t work, you start off with very oily bread no matter how much you try to scrape at the vinegar, and at the end you have very vinegary bread because the oil has all gone. Shallow plates are the way to go! The other dishes came quickly enough, all but one were good, the chicken was moist, well-cooked, the skewers well-seasoned, and the German chicken really creamy and flavoursome. The prawns were just right in the spiciness stakes and again cooked just right. No complaints either about the chorizo. The only slight grumble would be about the Albondigas, they just weren’t as good as I’d expect. They were a bit undercooked and not dense nor cohesive enough for my liking. They weren’t bad, but they didn’t pass muster compared to most tapas places. All-in-all I think this is a good addition to Glasgow’s ever-expanding tapas scene. It is the only tapas bar in that area, and so if you’re in the mood for Spanish and in the area it would be worth checking out. Hopefully it will get even better and establish a good customer base in what is predominantly Indian restaurant territory.
