Once upon a time I lived much closer to Il Cappuccino and made a mission for myself: Try all of the options on the hot sandwiches menu. It’s one of the most fun missions I’ve ever failed and I failed it because one of the sandwiches(I think the Dan Special) was so good I had to keep ordering it. So when I found myself walking past their door one lunchtime I decided to go back in for old times’ sake. I got a sandwich full of swiss cheese and pastrami on ciabatta and it was just as perfect as any of the ones I’d had before. The kind of simple but beautifully done lunch that can make your day and costs less than a fiver. They do also sell coffee and cakes and things like marinaded olives and freshly baked loaves of bread. They have dried pastas and jars of things like organic passata and so on. It’s all very tempting. I also noticed they sell fresh yeast for baking bread yourself at home, which is something I haven’t seen anywhere for years. I’m going to have to make more excuses to wander past Il Cappuccino in the near future. Maybe I’ll even give myself another shot at that mission.

The greatest sandwiches in Glasgow. End of. If you go here and don’t get the Dan’s Special you are truly missing out(that’s if you’ve not bought an Italian Stallion instead!) The prices here are great as well– my solitary qualm with the place is a lack of seating!

I love me a sandwich and this place delivers. I was in love right from the start. The new yorker with its yellow american mustard and dill pickles smothered with montery jack cheese laying on pastrami… couldn’t get any better. Subway, EATYOURHEARTOUT! my mouth is watering at the mere thought.

Amazing sandwiches at great prices. Recently this place has been really let down by the staff — they have a tendency to work incredibly slowly if the queue is not long. I don’t appreciate being one of two customers in a sandwich bar and waiting over 10 minutes for a sandwich! Although there are a couple of cheery souls behind the counter I am generally greeted with glum faces, and one time a staff member even dropped my sandwich lid, picked it up and continued using it for my food! As I said, the prices in Il Capp are fantastic considering the quality of the food you get… it is this only, and definitely not great customer service, which keeps me coming back.

What is a better than a great sandwich place that makes them in front of you with really fresh ingredients? When they have great names for the sandwiches. I love food with great names. Italian Stallion, New Yorker? Yeah — I kind of like that. Staff are pretty quick. If you consider the size of the lines that can develop in front of this place, they are still fast to get you in and out. If you are on Great Western and need some lunch — consider this your first stop.

It is cheap, sandwiches are tastier than Subway, the staff are friendly, the sandwich creations are nice, the things you can buy, such as various sauces and pastas are also good. So what is my problem, you might ask? When I order a pastrami sandwich, I kinda like more than one layer of pastrami. I guess you get what you pay for.

A popular sandwich bar, with a wide range of breads, meats and cheeses. Take out only.

This place should be called MMM… Cappucino — that’s right, I went there! It’s long serving and I’m a loyal servant to this gorgeous deli-sandwich deadly combination of greatness. Along with their jars full of delicacies they have a full range of sandwiches, baguettes and all sorts, with fresh fillings scooped up and placed in your meal choice. I am a huge fan of their New York panini option — got a tip off from my old workmates as it had legendary status amongst them. It is phenomenally tasty — I never even knew I liked dill pickle until I tasted the ones crammed inside it! The staff are a hand picked selection of friendly free spirits and all look very unphased no matter how busy the shop gets. It’s nice to visit somewhere where people behind the counter are effortlessly chatty, and their boss always seems interested in the customer and his team(a quality which is fastly becoming a rarity these days). It gives the place a chilled out but very accomodating vibe. For all that, it’s really cheap! Cheaper than a chain sandwich shop and far better. It’s one of the few places I crave on a weekly basis and will sometimes jog home from work to make sure I catch them before they close. Wonderful. The string of five star stats are well deserved!

When I first moved to Glasgow I lived in Maryhill and worked in the City Centre. I often used to take long walks during the day to acquaint myself with my new surroundings before working to work. One day I was getting to grips with Great Western Road when my belly rumbled, so I headed for the nearest place I should find that looked a bit different. Happily I stumbled across Il Cappuccino and bought a sandwich from their list of recommendations and thinking nothing more of it, wandered to the Botanics to enjoy whatever I had bough. And boy, did I enjoy it! I have been a fan ever since and regularly shun the chain stores in order to feast on the freshest ingredients and the softest bread money can buy round these here parts! While I would happily gorge myself on any of the Sandwiches on their list, my favourite has to be the Italian Stallion; big succulent pieces of chicken breast with crispy bacon, tomato, lettuce and marie rose sauce(and I get them to throw in some black olives for good measure). Delicious! And at only only £2.80 a pop! Which is a bargain as far I’m concerned — you get to see your lunch made in front of you so no pre packaged nonsense, the bread is beautiful and fresh which means your not getting any part baked doughy mass and its all only a few 10 pence’s more than a Subway or a Greggs! If you live in the area and have never been then do yourself a favour and buy a lunch that will not only fill you up, but that you will truly enjoy.

I can’t find the words to describe Il Cappuccino, my love affair of this place is so intense that I feel writing a review is almost insincere, my feeling for Il Cap are so strong they should be expressed through the medium of modern dance or maybe poetry but that wouldn’t make the best review so I’ll have to save it for my own time. This place will blow you away, the sandwiches are unlike any I’ve had anywhere else, continental and original I am constantly fighting an inner struggle to resist trying the same sandwich, once you pick one when you go back it is a real challenge to try something different simply because the first was that good. All their sandwiches are great, they don’t have a single sandwich which I would turn my nose up at. They are all priced so reasonably as well! I think this is maybe because they don’t have somewhere to sit which is their only downfall. Good selection of juice too, if you haven’t been here you need to go and see for yourself, sandwiches have rarely been such a treat.

At university I watched a screening of a short film which was due to be shown to new students arriving to Glasgow. It was a guided tour of the west end with the best places to chill out, have a pint and do your weekly shop. As I sat watching this film in a room with maybe one hundred other people, I was shocked when suddenly the crowd burst out in to a huge roar of ‘Waaaaaay!’; all because a local sandwich shop was caught by the camera. This ‘sandwich shop’ is Il Cappucino on Great Western Road, and I thought I should see for myself what all the fuss was about. Il Cappuccino is a deli but it’s their brisk trade in sandwiches and coffee to go which has made it legendry. Fresh sandwiches, baguettes, paninis and filled rolls are made while you wait, and you have a massive selection to choose from. Try their ‘Italian Stallion’ — foccaccia with chicken breast, bacon, lettuce and tomato or ‘Niagara Viagra– Chorizo, melted cheese and spicy mayo on a baguette. Or why not make your own with the selection of delicious fillings on offer. However I feel it is my duty to warn you– once you try one sandwich, it will be so good you will find it difficult opting for another. I’ve been buying ‘brie, apple, cranberry and mayo toasted on brown bread’ regularly for over a year now(sounds random, but honestly, it’s amazing!!) — I just can’t break the habit. Occasionally the queues at ‘Il Cap’ can be rather long, but I assure you it is worth the wait.
