Pretty good fish and chips and good prices! One of my favourite fish’n’ chips spots in Glasgow

Sometimes when I’m working in the Merchant City I like to reward myself with a chippie. Everything is cooked to order so it takes a bit longer than other places but it’s worth it. Their cans are quite expensive so I’d pop next door to the newsagent to but one there while you wait for your food to fry. The staff are friendly(I’ve never seen so many people behind a counter before) and it is very clean.

Ahh, Merchant Chippie. How I used to love you. Used to. This used to be THE place to go for an amazing fish supper etc in the city centre. The shop itself is a tiny corner shop — very narrow with some seating shoehorned in. This means that if there’s a couple of people inside waiting, you literally can’t move. Why they don’t have a door at each end of the shop to facilitate through traffic I’ll never know! The food here used to be super — crispy chips, fish perfectly fried etc. Unfortunately the past few times I’ve had food from here it’s been a total grease fest which has left me feeling icky right into the next day. My own opinion is that it is maintainiing it’s reputation due to being the only chippie this side of the city centre. By choice I’d(sadly) rather give it a miss nowadays.

Such a good chippie!!! Again so friendly and personal service. I had the fried pizza supper and my amazing boyfriend had a spicy haggis supper. The Chips here were lovely!

Best chippie I’ve been to since coming to Glasgow. Chips taste like how they’re supposed to and they have a pretty full chip shop menu, can’t go wrong.

You can’t beat a good chippie, and this one is awesome! On the corner of Ingram Street and High Street is this gem of a place. Well priced and tasty, you won’t want to go to another fish and chip shop again. All food is cooked to order, guaranteeing that it’s hot and fresh. And if it’s fish you’re craving — take you’re pick, they have a good selection of fish types to choose from. Once you’ve decided this, do you want it in batter or in breadcrumb? As well as the usual fried foods of sausage, haggis, black pudding, they also offer hot takeaway pasta dishes too. And chips — ooh, the chips — with plenty of salt and vinegar. The service is efficient and friendly. It gets really busy on weekend evenings — word has clearly got out about this plaice(see what I did there…). In the Summer you can sit outside on the street, or if the weather’s good, grab your chips and go sit in the graveyard of the Ramshorn Church just a block along Ingram Street. It’s a small chippie, but they’ve still managed to fit a few wee tables in if you don’t mind eating with little room and crowded in by the queue and poor layout. This is the only reason it’s not making a 5***** review for me — fix the traffic flow and maybe replace the tables with a window counter and it would make that super top ranking. Writing this review is making me hungry and I’m salivating at the thought of going back here — I know what I’m doing for dinner tonight.

Had fish and chips from here the other night as looking for something quick was not disappointed. Fish cooked fresh in front of me. Taste did not disappoint. I also asked for lots of vinegar and the fish was swimming it to my delight haha

At last, finally a chippy in this part of the town that offers a great selection of food cooked fresh at reasonable prices. If you don’t like deep fried food there is also a selection of pastas. There is always customers in no matter what time of the day, you can also eat your food inside or outside(weather permitting) and you get served quickly. The staff are friendly and this place is just across from Aldi on the High Street. To be honest chippy food is not my thing and its all fried in palm oil which if I’m going to indulge in deep fried food i would prefer beef dripping, but thats just me!

the fish was crispy and the chips not too soggy but there is a slight off flavour from the oil, better stick to sunflower oil or even old fashioned beef dripping warning this place is a health hazard. the assistant constantly licked her fingers when separating plastic carrier bags and did not wash them before serving food ok if you want salmonella, e coli etc avoid like the plague

Found this place by accident the first time I went in. Staff is lovely and good for some banter. Food is all very fresh especially the fish. I like the choice between batter and breadcrumbs on the haddock. The fresh fried salmon is my personal preference. The choice of fresh fried fish is nice too. You can also buy fresh fish from them as well.

This place makes me happy. I was getting burned-out on bad fish and chips until this new little joint opened up a mere block away from my flat. First off, they fry everything to order. You won’t see hunks of fish or even chips sitting out, getting soggy. The philosophy here is – correctly — that anything fried is best when it is fried fresh. This has excellent repercussions for both their fish and chips. They KEY here is to order your fish with the breadcrumb crust. Why? Because they first batter the fish, then roll it in panko-ish crumbs, then fry it. The crunch is sublime, and better than any other option I’ve tried in Glasgow so far. I opt for this on any type of fish here. I’ve tried the straight-up battered option, and it was not crispy enough for my liking. Go with the breadcrumb, and you will not be disappointed. Another positive is the selection of fish they maintain. It’s not just your average haddock, cod, and plaice chippie. They have about eight different fish from which you can choose, or buy the fillets from them. Merchant Chippie operates under the idea of being an old-fashioned chippie, but the to-order service, breadcrumb option, and selection are decidedly new for Glasgow. It’s time for Wegies to embrace change and give Merchant Chippie a try!
