National Tyres and Autocare

I will be the first to tell you that when it comes to cars, I am a silly, silly girl. They bore the pants off me. But, I inherited my grandma’s 2007 Micra last year and learned to drive this year… with great (horse) power comes great responsibility. Such as, getting an MOT. Let’s just gloss over the fact that I forgot about this fact and needed it in hurry — so being located down the road, and needing 3 new tyres before my MOT, i thought this place was the ticket. Also the fact I could book online (and get a half price MOT when I bought a tyre) was a nice bonus.
Gave them a call to confirm that I could drop my car in before the MOT at 9am (which they had no record of… had to be changed to 10am) — they confirmed yes, to drop it in at 8.30am when they opened. I duly did. And waited. And waited. Nervously.
Was then called around 11.30am to be told that I needed new brake pads and discs (the brake pads were not a shock, as the tyres had been squeaking)…and with a 10% discount for buying tyres with them… it came to £220, for the front two to be done. Now to me (with limited knowledge of cars, but I knew brake pads are around £60−70, fitted) this sounded hefty, and I said as such. The guy said not really, this was included fitting and VAT. I asked what the cost of a MOT retest would be if I got the work done elsewhere, which was £15. I then called around other garages near me and where my mum stays — all coming in at a maximum of £130 for the exact same work. I then called them back and asked if they would match this. The guy (Robert) laughed at the price, asked where I had called and said he would speak to his manager… he did, and said no they could not price match. I said fine, I would come to pick up my car.
I did, and literally just as I was about to leave I asked if they would do it for £150 (taking into account re-​test fees, and the taxi I’d need to pay to get from the other garage, I felt it was worth asking). Robert checked his computer (I don’t know what for) for a few minutes, then just gave me a nod. So, while I was happy with the ‘discount’, I really feel like they had just bumped their price up because, as my father would say, ‘they saw me coming’. The work itself is fine but I’m really annoyed they 1) wouldn’t price match, 2) did not come out and say what they could do it for so I got a fair deal, I had to ask again, and 3) their prices really are astronomical. Avoid.
