Oh how I used to enjoy the daily battle of wits my friends and I would encounter with dear ScraggyBones. It was a lot better when he was there. Somehow Chipotle just doesn’t seem the same without good old Scraggy. BRINGBACKSCRAGGYBONES!

I like Subway. Even though the bread makes my stomach swell like a football and they only offer one vegetarian sandwich and I’m not entirely sure how they manage to fit 400 calories into a sandwich that only includes vegetables, I find the chain cheap, tasty and convenient since there seems to be one on practically every street corner. So whenever I am in the city centre and the hunger pangs strike, I pop into the St Vincent Place chain. For some reason it always seems to be full of really odd people. Not just slightly odd, really odd, like heroin addict, just released from Barlinnie odd. I do not understand this as the branch is situated bang in the middle of the city centre, not in one of Glasgow’s roughest suburbs. Whenever I visit this particular Subway I always seem to need the toilet which I think is my evil body playing tricks on me as it knows it is possibly the most unappealing toilet in the world. The ladies seems to have been locked up for good for god knows what reason, so everyone is forced to use the disabled toilet. The door opens to reveal what can only be described as squalor. God knows what has gone on in that little room. Maybe one day the toilet will flush I suppose the moral of the story is this: I still like Subway. I will still pop into the St Vincent Place branch to get my sandwich fix. I would just advise others to pass on the 500ml bottle of Diet Coke.

I really shouldn’t be reviewing my second Subway, but after two recent visits to this branch, where I switched from my usual order to go for a BMT and then a chicken and bacon ranch sub, I realised something. No matter what you order at Subway, be it chicken, ham, steak etc, and no matter what sauce, salad or bread you have, it will always taste EXACTLYTHESAME. That’s not entirely a criticism, as it’s a nice taste, but Quiznos is way ahead in my book, as is making your own sandwiches.

It was good until Scraggy Bones left. He was the man. Think he know works in Shawlands, so when you go into Subway in Shawlands ask for the Scraggy Bones Special and don’t leave until he comes out and makes it. He usually works in the back area. It is a masterpiece that only he himself can deliver! A special topping combo that surpasses any Sandwich Artist around. He started his trade down at Subway, Langside. He was such a Scraggy young fellow in those days, making all those sandwiches in the hustle bustle of Battlefield. But now, look at him, hes done it and everyone will now know the master that is Scraggy Bones. He rocks my scraggy world. mmmhmmm!

This, the St. Vincent Place ‘Subway’, is the best Subway outlet in Glasgow city centre — there are a total of five at last count. It has polite foreign staff, very quick service and spacious seating.

Subway is the sort of place that’s fine once you’ve been a few times and you ‘get it’ but the first time you go in you better get ready to make a lot of decisions pretty fastwhat kind of bread, size, main filling, extra fillings, toasted or not, drinks, deals, etc. If you get a friendly staff member you’re fine. Having said that the food is good for what it is and it’s nice to pick exactly what you want on it once you’ve worked that out. As with all these places the soft drinks, crisps and other extras are overpriced but the subs are good.

Usual service and quality of food expected from Subway with freshly made sandwiches in front of you. Good selection of fillings to go with their freshly made bread. Good value as well.

If you have had a good drink and need some quick food at midnight this is the place to go. Cheap, with so many options! At night they don’t do sit-in but this is expected. Plus I don’t think I could quite handle sitting in with the huge bouncer watching me all the time!
