Heaven for scented candles fans!!! Staff are always nice and there’s a good range of scents/candle types to choose from. Just make sure you take cash and not card, so you don’t drain their stock and still be able to pay your utility bills for the rest of the year.

I adore candles but I’ve never bought high quality candles… until now. I visited Shearer Candle’s and had a tour around the factory(which they arrange). I saw first hand how the family company create the candles from scratch and the methods they do it in. It was fascinating! After the tour, I went into their shop to smell all the different types of candles that they have on offer and they couldn’t resist name dropping a few of their famous clients; Madonna, Janet Jackson and George Michael to name a few. In fact, George Michael buys CRATES of the Persian Lime fragrance candles, so I couldn’t resist grabbing that for myself. The candles are very high quality and they smell amazing. My favourites have to be Persian Lime, Watermelon, Winter Fig(a christmas variety) and then Amber Noir. As well as having the main shop with the high quality candles(large ones are around £15), they also have the«seconds» area where candles that haven’t passed the final quality inspection are sold at reduced price e.g. instead of £15, it’s £8 etc. If you love candles, you really need to go for a visit… and even better… it’s a local company!

I had been wanting to visit the Shearer Candle store ever since I heard their candles were top notch and discovered their factory & shop is right near Govan subway. Yus. A friend from work was also wanting a wee trip there so she gave me a lift from work to their shop, which it turns out is actually easier to get to on foot/bike/public transport than in a car as you have to enter the factory from the behind(Ooh…steady now!) from Helen Street. Eventually we got there. The shop is to the left of the front entrance of the factory and it’s actually quite small but it has all their produce and they seemed to be very well stocked(I’m guessing having the factory that produces the candles right next door helps). Upon entering on this dreich Thursday late afternoon(they stay open until 7pm on a Thursday) we were straight away greeted by two lovely ladies and immediately asked if we would like a glass of bubbly! Now that is quality service. ‘Oh yes… I could get used to this’ I thought… fabulous. There were nibbles too but I was quite happy with my glass of fizzy. I was happy they let us browse unpressured as there is nothing worse than a shop assistant that won’t leave you alone. Ooft. Bugs me. So we perused their many various scented and unscented candles & holders. I wasn’t familiar with any of their scents as such — I had only read their descriptions on the Shearer Candles website so I kinda had a wee inkling of which particular scents I might like and I am pleased to say I wasn’t wrong. After sniffing lots of different scents I soon deduced that their Amber Noir scent was definitely a winner for me. It just smells divine. I could go onto describe it but I wouldn’t do it justice. So in my basket went(quite a few of) these candles and then I noticed the Bargain Buckets — lots of cheaper candles that are simply not shop-worthy(wonky/no label or uneven wax) but still absolutely fine. Woo-hoo! I must admit I did get rather carried away with these… picked out some more Amber Noir alongside some Ae Fond Kiss, Vanilla & Coconut and Egyptian Cotton ~ all smell absolutely beautiful but they just don’t look ‘perfect’. I’m a bit of a sucker for imperfections and a bargain, so I was one happy camper. Just when we thought we had finished looking at all the beautiful votive, pillar or tinned candles, tea-lights, holders, reed diffusers and other such loveliness we then realised that the room next door also held even MORE goodies! Woah. So we had a quick look around and with my basket already full I vowed to go back again, and I most definitely will. They also sell their candles in beautiful gift boxes and can gift wrap any candles should you wish them too. Shearer not only produce their own candles but they also make candles for other companies too and their wax and scents are of a very high quality. I have bought many scented candles in the past and none quite last as long or smell as fragrant as theirs do. My favourite type of candle is their large tinned candle which burns for approx. 40 hours and at £6(full price in the shop or £7 online. But also available in their discounted section too) is great value, especially when you compare them to other high quality/big name scented candle brands. Also we should buy local and support local, Scottish businesses more and Shearer have been around producing candles in Scotland since 1897! Amongst all their ranges of candles & scents they had a beautiful collection called V&A and these were slightly more expensive ‘higher end’ scented candles and reed diffusers in exquisite packaging and ALL of them smelled divine. Mmmm… I also have to thank Shearer Candles for making Govan Cross smell wonderful ~ before I knew it existed I was convinced there must have been a secret Willy Wonka-esque sweetie factory pumping out all these amazing, sweet smells! Ha ha!

My friend has been talking about The Candle Store for months and months, telling me how good it is and that I need to visit. I absolutely love candles and now and again will treat myself to a Yankee Candle(or steal one from my mum). Although Yankee’s smell good enough to eat, and last for hours upon hours, they’re just not very bank balance friendly and as a student I can’t really justify the prices even though the smells are always amazing. I’ve tried various different candle makes and nothing really seems to compare which is why I am SO happy that I found The Candle Store. Situated just across the road from Govan Underground it makes it easy to locate if you don’t have a car. Even though it’s quite a small shop there are literally hundreds of candles to choose from, I was easily there for 25 minutes. The woman who was working was so nice and helpful and she showed me a few of her favourite candles which all smelled amazing! I liked the fact that I was left to browse under no pressure to buy anything but I knew that if I needed help there was someone to ask who was very easy to approach. I was even given a few tips on how to make my candle last longer! What’s more, the shop is beautiful decorated with candles lit in various corners which adds to the excellent attention to detail and makes the shop very welcoming indeed. Eventually, I opted for a large amber and rose candle at a ridiculously reasonable £3! I’m sure it will burn for days and the smell is amazing. It reminds me of the Thierry Mugler Angel perfume, and when I woke up this morning my whole room smelled delicious and it hasn’t even been lit yet! When I purchased my candle it was wrapped in pretty pink tissue paper with«The Candle Store» card on it which I thought was a really nice touch — perfect for gifts. There’s even a gift wrapping service with beautiful boxes and ribbons to choose from. In addition to basic candles for around the home there are candles specifically designed for gift ideas with flowers wrapped around them, in cute little tins and gift boxes too. I can’t wait to tell my friend that I eventually paid a visit to The Candle Store and I will definitely be back!
