The Hub,(a.k.a. The Fraser Building), houses the John Smith bookshop, a couple of canteen style eateries(the seating for these two is shared) and a bunch of student services including the careers service. The John Smith bookshop is on level 1, and there’s an ATM right outside it. They stock most of the major course books, especially those involved in first year undergraduate teaching. They also have stationary, planners and study aids. They probably aren’t the cheapest place to buy most texts, though, so unless you absolutely have to buy the book from them for some reason, I’d recommend shopping around a bit. Student services is on level 2 and also involves helping students out with certifying letters, council tax exemptions, degree certificates and translations, academic transcripts, references, student ID cards, and they deal with tuition fee issues. These services are open approximately 9 – 5, Monday to Friday. It might be obvious to say it but, unless you have no other choice, avoid the hub during the first couple of weeks of term — it will be absolutely overrun with new students trying to sort everything out. Food for Thought(and the smaller, Food to Go) are on level 3. Food for Thought is bigger and serves more hot food. It’s all canteen style stuff; baked potatoes, mac and cheese, curry of the day — that kind of thing. Some of it can be surprisingly good and it’s well worth a visit if you need something quick and cheap to eat — especially if you have your student card. Just don’t expect anything gourmet. It’s open 11 am — 3pm, Monday to Friday, so really it caters for lunch. Likewise, Food to Go is pretty basic — they do salads and sandwiches, cakes and bakes, crisps, chocolate and fruit. Pretty much anything that doesn’t need to be hot, plus a few ready meals that you can take away to heat up yourself. It is open 8 am to 7:30 pm, Monday to Thursday. On Friday’s it’s open 8 am to 4:30 pm. So watch out for that — maybe head to one of the unions if you want student food on campus on a Friday afternoon. The seating areas for both stay open until about 8pm. The coffee for both comes out of a machine — if you’re in a hurry I guess that’s fine but if not there’s no shortage of good coffee places near the university, so I’d recommend getting it somewhere else. You can also find newspapers for sale(or abandoned on tables) around level 3. As far as I’m concerned, as a student, the Hub is pretty handy. There’s loads and loads of space, so it’s a great place to meet a group for lunch without worrying where you’ll sit. The food and drink is cheap enough, which is great when you really want a hot meal but don’t want it to break the bank. Plus, I’ve had to visit student services more times then anyone would really want to and those people know what they’re doing. They fix problems.

Ok so it isn’t really expensive in the grand scheme of things but for pretty average to crappy student food it is expensive. Though to be fair sometimes the meals are actually enjoyable. Oh and let me tell you about the cake. AMAZING! The marsbar cake is some of the best cake I have ever eaten, with the rest of the cakecoming pretty close. Also it has quite a lot of vegan stuff which, despite my not being vegan, I often go for because it is pretty tasty. Saying all this I miss the old hub with cheapo pie chips, beans and baked potatoes. So I am prtobably being nostalgic and bias, but I let you know, so you can decide. All this said I go here lots because of it’s location, it is far too convienient. Most importantly coffee and cake is only £1.69!

I was stupidly excited when the Hub re-opened last year. After three long years of drinking vending-machine coffee in the library, I couldn’t believe I’d be able to get a decent cuppa in my study breaks. FAIL. Whoever organised the eateries obviously has no taste because the only coffee is out a machine. You push a button. It may as well be a vendi. While I’m on a rant, I also want to point out that the architect of this place is a bit dim. The Hub looks onto a stunning backdrop of the Round Reading Room and University Building(it’s particularly beautiful in the morning when the sun’s out) however mr/mrs architect failed to put in adequate windows that are big enough to actually appreciate the view. You’ll notice it next time you’re guzzling your crappy coffee. Ok I’m done. As previously mentioned, the building itself has impressive interiors and it’s a good location. I used to meet other students in a study group here every week in the morning when it’s quiet. Unfortunately the food is only ok.

The Hub is, as Lewis pointed out, a café-cum-eaterie type place in the Fraser Building. Having taken the best part of 3 years to be completed(maybe less, but it felt like 3 years), when the multi-purpose Fraser building was completed, the Hub was overrun with students. The eating area is maaaaaaaassive. They have hundreds of tables, including some sofas and armchairs at the back, for use. The food itself ranges from quick take away style sandwiches and baked potatoes, to fully proper sit-down meals, depending on whats on the menu. Ok, the food is canteen stylee. It doesn’t taste amazing, and you might grumble at some of the costs, but it’s handy and that’s the whole point — convenience — and it’s healthier than going for some chips or whathaveyou elsewhere.
