Kick ass… Thursday evening why not check out the interestingly titled ‘Bleak Disco’ at LWH. Now I’ve never been in here at night and wasn’t really sure how it would ‘let down it’s restaurant hair’ and kick back bar stylee, but you now what? if anything this place feels more ‘right’ at night. The décor in here is cool as. The drinks are reasonable(£2.50 for a pint of Amstel) and the vibe? Well I ain’t sure if it was just the cool emanating from me and my drinking buddy, but it felt pretty darn good says I. Would I go back… Sorry, more like when will I be back! Check it out, a worthy addition to bar hot spots in this end o’ toon… Long Way Home? Aye, but it’s worth it.

We were in the sort of mood where you’re hungry, but you don’t really fancy a big meal in a restaurant but you’re too peckish to walk around eating a Gregg’s sausage roll. Being in Glasgow’s West End, we were spoilt for choice so when we wandered past The Long Way Home I was expecting a bit of a run of the mill pub lunch and nothing more. The pub isn’t anything exciting to look at, although I really liked the décor. It was simple, dark wood and funky patterned wall paper with stairs leading up to an upper floor and a big bar at the front with couches and candles. Comfortable, homely and just what the Doctor ordered. We were given the drinks menu, which had a huge selection of Gin cocktails. If it hadn’t been Sunday afternoon then I would have sampled several, but I decided to keep the Sabbath holy and have an OJ instead. We had a look at the brunch menu, the specials menu(with a selection of Octoberfest related dishes) and the regular menu. Lots of menus! We eventually decided on a hot sandwich each, both for under £5. I had the slow roasted pork with bbq sauce and the other half has steak and caramelised onions. Both sounded delicious, even though I have never been a fan of pork, which kind of makes my decision of Pork seem strange. It was a Sunday though, and I was throwing caution to the wind. The sandwich came and I was very pleasantly surprised. Three strips of pork smothered in sauce lay on two large slabs of white crusty loaf, one half covered in peppery salad. I loved the fact that it wasn’t ruined with mayonnaise or unnecessary dressings. The pork was absolutely delicious, and tasted as if it had just came off the BBQ. It was definitely prepared absolutely fresh and you could taste the difference that made. It was difficult to polish it off but I did my very best! No room for desert, and we left only £14 lighter including our meals, two portions of chips(which were delicious, chunky and crispy) and two soft drinks. Great value for a delicious meal.

Well I was back for my staff Christmas dinner and yes it was the same area on the mezzaine level as was the Unilocal Elite night out. Yay! We only needed to pay £9.50 for a 2 course meal. It was £11.50 for 3 courses but I’m not a big eater to be honest. So I opted for main and dessert of course. I was a tad disappointed to have no haggis balls, they did have haggis on the menu but it was the traditional with neeps and tatties. There was also no roast turkey dinner or Christmas crackers but I found out from my manager that we would have needed to pay an extra £10 to have the trimmings. To be honest we had a enough Christmas crackers told at our table to make the whole of Glasgow moan. It was a pleasant enough meal and the cost cutting by our manager was appreciated. I also bought myself a wee cheeky Bramble but you that way it just didn’t taste the same from the last time. Hmm!!! Anyway on browsing through the drinks menu I was more than delighted to see my fav, fruit beers. Ya dancer!!! So I skipped on down to the bar and got myself a tasty tasty raspberry beer. One happy bunny! So overall it was a great wee Christmas dinner as was the rest of the night in the town giving it yaldy. Hopefully I’ll be back in The Long Way Home for maybe a, you know, normal meal/occasion.
