I actually have a mouthful of pierogi(Polish dumplings) as I write this — that’s how fresh I like to make my reviews. U Jarka is the amazing Polish restaurant in Kelvingrove, and they quietly opened a takeaway on Duke Street this week. I only heard about it by chance through twitter and was busting to visit … so much so that I hopped in a taxi fresh off the train from Edinburgh and headed here before going home. It’s a wee takeaway shop — they have breads, soft drinks, cakes, meats, and of course, pierogi. That’s all I wanted so I just grabbed them to take away but will definitely return to try more of their stuff. Today they had two kinds of dumplings — cottage cheese and meat. I wasn’t sure what the meat ones actually were but they give you a wee cooking instructions card which says they are filled with beef, pork, chicken, fried onion and spices. Cottage cheese has potato, onions and spices. I asked how many would feel two for dinner and they said about 8 each, so I ended getting 20 just for a nice round number. For a bargain £6.50, I grabbed my bag of pierogi and headed home. I just cooked up a batch of the cottage cheese ones and they are just as delicious as I was hoping. They don’t look like much, I’ll be honest, but they are packed with flavour and are so delicious. You can boil or fry them too, which is just a whole other world of excitement.
