Came here to meet up with a friend for some drinks. It was great. They have a nice selection of light and dark beers. I love dark beers and was quite pleased with the ‘Black’ beer. They also have wine if beer isn’t your thing. I haven’t had a chance to try the food yet, but it seems like it would be a good place to eat. It’s got a very clean and open feel inside — definitely the kind of place you feel happy to be in. When I went it was pretty busy but I didn’t need to make a reservation to get a table. All in all it’s a cool place and I’m sure I will be back again.

I must say, since migrating west, I miss Saturdays at the Templeton West. I have seriously missed drinking beer with the denizens of Dennistoun and their adorable dogs, soaking in the local history on the site of the old carpet factory. Sometimes even outside in the sunsh… in the not rain. News of the West End chapter therefore came with much joy and jumping around and ‘walk-bys’ to check on developments on the re-furb! Though not the same experience as the old, vaulting factory set on a sprawling green lawn, West on the Corner makes a perfectly wonderful spot to enjoy some cheeky Saturday afternoon pints. In some ways, it might even be better. I first visited the new wee West during its opening week, barely managing to squeeze myself into the place. Turns out I’m not the only person in Glasgow with much love for West :) I was just there for drinks that time — Munich Red is one of my favourite beers, as in, of all the ones I’ve ever tasted. I have now discovered that this was a colossal waste of a food experience. The food at wee West, like its Templeton brother, is delicious! And I’m not the biggest fan of German food. I essentially slurped down half a roasted chicken and plate of perfect(perfect!) chips. The chicken was served with half of a roasted lemon(or possibly grilled) so I could greedily baste my bird in slightly caramelized lemon juice — the perfect touch! My husband, a glutton for German football food, enjoyed his currywurst, which I’m sure is top notch, if you like that sort of thing. This particular Saturday afternoon, there was live music, which definitely lent itself to the laid back, authentic experience also felt at the Templeton West. It was a touch on the loud side for the size of the venue, but the singer and guitarist had the right kind of sound for an afternoon set. It was bar-side only seating, which is a relatively small space, but the music definitely added value to a simple Saturday lunch and pints. The service, also, was friendly, efficient, and laid back(though a smidge difficult to hear over the music). For a more full-on West beer experience(especially after it ‘warms up’), I will probably make the trek to Templeton to sit out on the wooden tables and watch the dogs and enjoy the scenery. For a more ordinary day, though, especially a day annoyingly stacked with other non-beer drinking activities, like work, I’ll head to West on the Corner, for a more pubby pint and cosier meal.

On our return from a trip to Germany we decided to have dinner at WEST on the Corner to keep the holiday feeling going just a little bit longer! I’ve enjoyed many a WEST brew at the Glasgow Green beer hall so a visit to WOTC was overdue. The bar area was buzzing but the restaurant area tucked round the corner was a bit more sedate. Three of us were seated at a table close to the open kitchen, where we could have a good nosey. German cuisine isn’t exactly renowned for being veggie friendly but I did have two mains to choose from and a vegan alternative was also available. Starters of butternut squash soup with tapa bread, and black pudding salad were good, followed by mains of wild mushroom arancini, jäger schnitzel with fries and chicken and chips. I enjoyed the crispy arancini balls though the flavour of the accompanying sauerkraut was a little overpowering with it. My friend’s chicken and chips went down a treat. I tried some of the chips and they were great — big and chunky, crisp on the outside and well tasty. My other half was a bit disappointed that his schnitzel didn’t come breaded but still managed to scoff the lot — the mushroom sauce that comes with it was delicious(I tried some of that too!). The beer was great as usual, and that’s really what it’s all about — you’ll find all your favourites from the WEST range here. We had a few pints of seasonal Oktoberfest with our meal, and I’m sure we’ll be back for more.

I was so excited to eat at the new WOTC As I really like the food at west on the green. The new west or as I like to call it Wee west has been revamped and looks nothing like the Halt bar. It’s Fresh, bright and has a real Scandinavian feel to it. It was a busy Saturday night and we had booked for a table for 5 for 7:30, we had a little wait but nothing to long. Taken to our table the first thoughts were that it looked a little makeshift, a table for four set but with a stool stuck on the end. Ideal for 5 little eaters. Firstly the stool was too high for the table so the person on the end towered above the table and everyone else, even someone as small as me had trouble. This also caused problems when trying to eat hunched over a plate of food just isn’t good for digestion. I felt extremely uncomfortable. On to the food. For starters I went for the fish cake with curry sauce. It was really tasty but was more like a potato cake rather than fish which I really didn’t have a problem with. Main meals I struggled to choose as there was a few good options. I eventually went with the steak pie and shared a sausage platter as a second main with Ally G. The steak was tasty, fresh pastry served with a side of fries perfect for dipping into the sauce. The sausage platter was amazing value for money, three massive bravarian sausages with saukrakut. One starter and two mains I decided to pass on the desert. I was really disappointed in the rest of the experience. The waitress was a little disinterested and a bit meh. Warm wine was served and when requested a cold glass she offered a ice cube — not something you would expect from waiting staff! At this point I am extremely uncomfortable and couldn’t wait to leave, our original plan was to spend the rest of the evening in the bar.

Time for a post refurb update… So as we all know by now West took over the halt bar and for a while it was a west version of the Halt bar. Old Mannish still, but with west beer and a good atmosphere. Then the renovation happened! The transformation was beyond spectacular. It has been changed beyond all recognition. It is in my mind the smartest looking bar I can think of in Glasgow at the moment. Cool, slick, bright and modern it is a superb place to have a beer. For me it is usually a pint of the superb West dunkel which is the beer of choice. Still dog friendly of course. This pub truly could fit into any of the coolest cities in the world. I’ve not tried the food yet,(I will in the future) but as a drinking venue this really is top notch place to enjoy pint.

I have been back here since WEST took it over, ripped out any remnants of the old Halt Bar that was here before. Much as I loved that rickety old place, I have to say — this place is stunning. Absolutely changed from what it once was to a dramatic, light and bright open plan setting. The staff have also become accustomed to their settings, and couldn’t have been more helpful, even down to the line of bowls for you four legged friends to drink from while you sip your exquisitely brewed WEST beverage. Honestly, even if you’re just popping for a beer, you’ll be taken aback by how bright and comfortable the place is. I’ve heard rave reviews over the food, if it’s as good as the food that Glasgow Green branch serves up, all will be well. An amazing transformation and somewhere I keep on making beelines for when I’m in the area.

They have since revamped this place yet again since my last review and I must say I am a fan. It’s very bright, airy & pretty(deceptively) big. I’ve since been back for drinks(it gets pretty busy on the usual nights as you would expect) and if you snaffle a window seat/table it’s great for people-watching. The beer is well, West Beer! If you haven’t found at least one West beer you like then you need to keep trying! I was super chuffed to see they’ve kept the delicious Wild West beer on tap ~ yas! It’s one of my favourites. I also really like their Munich Red and GPA *slurp!* Certainly whets yr whistle. Last visit we came for food and I’d reserved us a table and we were both delighted with said table ~ it was in the ‘other’ room, and it was a wee cosy, booth up at the window ~ perfect. The place is pretty spotless & so serene if ever a bar can be described as such… the staff serving are also really friendly & very smiley(but not false smiley), which did surprise me as some folk have noted the ‘Hipsterness’ of this place. Maybe some of the clientele & waiter/esses are but ther’s no snobbery here, I didn’t feel it anyway. Everyone is just genuinely lovely. Onto the food. We ordered the Bayrisher Wurtsalat for starter to share. This was a delicious combination of Bavarian sausages sliced & served with cute gerkins & a vinaigrette on(Tapa) rye bread. Really good. I’m not actually a big sausage fan(ooh-err!) but I do really enjoy Bavarian/German sausages(ooh-err again!), explain THAT?!(Err…okay, you don’t have to really). For Mains I went for the Currywurst; 2 big smoked Brockwurst sausages served with chips, salad and curry sauce on the side. The curry sauce was more like a spicy brown sauce than a Chinese/Indian curry sauce as we know it, it was different but still nice. The sausages & fries were both stupendous! Really tasty & super filling. My boyfriend opted for the Nurnberger Bratwurst, which was served with mash, sauerkraut & a beefy jus/gravy. I tried some & it was sehr gut! He loved it. Also as a side we ordered some of the Bavarian cheese spatzle purely because I wondered what it was & the waiter said ‘it’s like a mad mac n’ cheese…’ he was right! It’s like a quite mild flavoured mac n cheese. My boyfriend wasn’t a fan but I really got into it. Nom. For dessert we shared the Black Forest fondant with crème fraîche ice cream which was also very nice and not as sweet as I thought it might be. Luckily it wasn’t too huge so we left feeling just the right amount of full. The beers I had were of courses divine; no question about that. Both main courses were a ten-spot and starter was a fiver. With drinks and the side dish I thought our bill was really good value for all the food we consumed. We went home with very happy bellies indeed. Great décor, yummy food, tasty beer & lovely staff. Zwei thumbs up! Thank you West ~ as your fellow Austrian would say ‘I’ll be back!’

If you haven’t been for a while, you will not recognise the place. They kept the old Halt layout for a while but the West on the Corner has now put its stamp on it for good now. It’s completely changed but definitely in a good way. It’s bright, white and feels so much bigger. Good job guys! If you like WEST beer you will love it here. It’s not like the WEST Brewery, so has its own individual look. I would definitely say catered for the West End. I’ve yet to go for food but from what I’ve heard it’s definitely somewhere to try. It gets super busy when the sun makes an appearance in Glasgow but if you get in early and get a wee spot to sit it can be a pleasant bar to sit and enjoy a cool refreshing wee snifter. I look forward to going back again and hopefully get a wee try of their menu next time.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the experience I expected from West on the Corner. My first impressions will never be forgotten! So, it starts with me booking a table for 6 for the night after my graduation. I booked 4 days in advanced and requested to be seated in the restaurant area and was told not to worry as I’ve been assured by a staff member that we’d get a quiet space away from the large loud parties. Ok coohl. But come the night itself, we were seated in the middle of the busiest space in the bar area. -.- a table that was squished in between the cashier, the men’s entrance to the loo, the entrance to the restaurant, and about 3 other big tables behind us. Total opposite of what I requested which was a mega disappointment. Was told that the restaurant was full and they had to place me in the bar, even though I’d booked 4 days in advance and specifically requested to be in the restaurant. You could imagine my mood at that point! Lucky for us, the establishments waiting staff, food and drinks saved the night a wee bit for me and my family. I applaud the guy who tried to communicate in Spanish! Good try pal ;) and the girl who was so patient with one of my grumpy family members, kudos to you too! You did good! Despite having to tolerate the noise and people shoving us around(and my poor wee bro getting hit on the head with bags) while people moved everywhere with their full pints of beer, we still managed to try and have a good time! The food was satisfying though nothing exceptional. I really like the beers I tried! Munich red I think. Those were the highlights of the meal. I will eventually give this place a second chance(and update my review) because of the waiting staff and beers but I’m not dying to get there anytime soon, sorry. Ps the manager emailed me apologising for not fulfilling my expectations which is greatly appreciated but it won’t change the fact that I probably won’t bring anyone there for dinner next time. Maybe lunch will be better and quieter?

I paid my first visit to WEST a few days ago with the gorgeous community manager of Unilocal Glasgow — Briony — for a catch up and I have to tell you I was impressed not only with her witty banter but also the bar. WEST on the Corner is located on Woodlands Road and is a treat to the eye. Outside they have gone for a super trendy distressed look which I LUV! Inside is a wonderfully light airy bright space — there are massive windows letting in heaps of light, cool exposed brick walls, a wooden bar and Scandinavian style furniture and lighting. I really enjoyed hanging out in this bar and can imagine spending lots of time there over the summer(if it ever arrives). The staff were lovely. There were lots of smiles and greetings when I walked into the bar, they were attentive and more than happy to help describe dishes to us when we asked. Plus, I really liked their uniforms. As you would imagine from a brewery describing themselves as: ‘Glaswegian Heart. German Head.’ the menu is all about showing their true German side, I am talking Currywurst, Bayrischer Wurstsalat and of course Schnitzel. Now that you understand my deep deep love for pretzels, you will understand that I couldn’t look past the Nürnberger & sauerkraut which are little link style sausages served on a pretzel bun! That is right people, this is not a drill — a freakin PRETZELBUN!!! When my food arrived, I dove in straight away and devoured it within about 2 minutes. It was really good. The bun was salty and hard on the outside and perfectly doughty and stretchy inside. The 3 sausages which were served in the bun were really flavoursome and well proportioned for the bun. The sauerkraut wasn’t over powering and just added a really lovely additional texture and slightly aromatic taste to the dish. I also had sides of fries and a green salad. Both of these were tasty enough. The chips were large, crunchy and well seasoned and the green salad… well it was a green salad and I only really ordered it to pretend that I was eating healthy. I forgot to take a picture of the bill but I think my share came to about £20 which included 2 lattes and an amazing additional pretzel for dessert! All in all, this is a great little bar. Food wise, they aren’t offering fine dining; instead, they are doing pretty tasty bar food, which I really enjoyed and I will definitely visit again soon to try more of their menu.

When I heard that the reburbishment from the pop up version was complete, I was excited to see the finished result. West have created a really lovely space. It’s very light and fresh, with muted matt gray colours, brushed metal light fittings, and light wooden floors. The bar is down one side, which makes perfect sense in terms of use of space. The windows open right up too, which allowed for a refeshing breeze on what was a warm and sunny day. Staff were really friendly and efficient, and surprisingly quick as it was pretty busy inside. I had a beautiful pint of Hefeweizen. It’s such a lovely wheat beer with just the banan-ish flavours that l like. In fact, I had 2 pints. That was a mistake — it’s quite strong! To compensate for the 2 pints I also had some chips. So it’s not exactly a review of the food — that’s hardly fair. They weren’t great chips. They tasted like fish — I’m guessing maybe fried in the same oil, or maybe old oil? I don’t think that would bother most people, but, I probably wouldn’t get the chips again unless I knew they were super fresh and tasted of potato rather than fish. But then that’s kinda a moot point anway, because I’m not going to West for the chips, I’m going for the amazing beer. I discovered just before I was leaving that there is another huge space round the corner at the back of the bar — next time I’m in I will check there for seats first, as we were continually having to defend the seats we were saving for our pals. Once we were all settled, I really enjoyed the atmosphere there — a hum of conversation, but not too loud. All in, I really liked the bar, and I’ll definitely be back.

Absolutely unrecognisable from The Halt which was here for years, and where West threw a lick of paint on during the Commonwealth Games, this is a great permanent addition to Woodlands Road, and is definitely somewhere you should consider on a sunny day. It’s just so light. Where The Halt was a traditional old-mans pub, WOTC has transformed the space into a light, airy wine-bar style space. All of the stonework has been left exposed, and the space has been opened up with loads of long windows. On a nice day this makes all the difference, and brings loads of light into the space and allows you to watch the world go by(there could be a few more seats outside though). There are 2 main spaces: a main bar and a restaurant area. The bar is a great space to stay in, although it can get a little busy, so don’t expect quiet on a busy day, and with the area having a big long table dominating the space expect to sit next to some folk you might not know. This space has lots of pictures(including a couple of Lobey Dosser ones linking it to the statue outside). This area is also dog friendly. The restaurant is a lot more intimate, and feels a lot more relaxed, even though it has an open kitchen area. The style flows through into this area, although it might be a little darker than the first. Overall, it’s good to see that West have done something different with this Bar, and have avoided turning it into a smaller photocopy of the original Glasgow Green bar(a la Brewdog). In terms of drinks, it’s as expected though, with pretty much all of the West variants on tap. It does have a decent selections of wines and other drinks if you aren’t a beer fan. The food is also pretty consistent with the original, with German specialties. I had the Bratwurst burger and chips which was great — not stellar, but pretty good, definitely worth a shot though. The biggest issue is going to be whether it gets too busy for its size. It’s probably the swishest bar in walking distance, and with West being a bit of a draw there could be a risk that it’s going to fill up early in the day and stay full. I’ll definitely be back, and an update will surely follow.

West on the Corner has now been refurbished and re-launched yesterday(Sat 9 May 2015). Was I a bit excited? That’s an understatement — I made a booking for dinner and a few of us went along for a pre-drink. Outside they’ve gone for the popular shabby chic/rustic look with the signage, but inside is sleek, modern, crisp and clean. It really doesn’t resemble the main West Brewery at all which I think is a great idea — it gives it a totally different feel and really matches the surrounding area(surely Woodlands is the new Finnieston?). The massive bar of the Halt is gone and replaced with a bar along one wall, a long centre table and seats around the windows. It’s a great use of the space and I like the long sharing table in the middle. The décor is clean, crisp white and on a sunny day is absolutely radiant. We had some beers while waiting for our dinner reservation to roll around and as you’d expect, there’s the full West range. I tried the GPA and Wild West which were both new to me and I’d have both of them again. Onto dinner. The dining space has a really different vibe to the bar and was almost tranquil. It was busy for their first night but service was totally spot on and we couldn’t have been looked after better. The menu is pretty short — 3 starters, 5 mains as well as sides, kids options and some desserts. There’s an all day option of a sharing board and beer snacks(read: pretzels!). Overall I’d say the menu is a bit more upmarket than West but still sticks with the German classics. We decided to get the beef goulash to share as a starter and then I got the Weiner Schnitzel for my main. The goulash was nice, rich and hearty and a good size to share between two. The schnitzel was the real start though — served with a delicious fried duck egg on top(served runny) and a lovely potato salad. I also got a side of sauerkraut as I’m a bit addicted to it right now and it was a nice refreshing side. The schnitzel portion was perhaps a little on the small side for £13 and I had to steal a couple of Graeme’s chips to dip into the fried egg but otherwise it was a lovely meal. At one point, a waiter came to ask us for feedback which I heard him relay to the chef which I thought was a nice touch — they’re obviously keen for input to make sure their menu is spot on. I fancied a little something to finish off the meal but am not much of a dessert person, so got a pretzel. I’m pretty sure it was forgotten about initially as about 10 minutes passed before someone came over to tell me that it was on its way but we were happily drinking our beers so that wasn’t a big deal. We had friends come to join us at the end of the meal and the staff happily accommodated them and checked if they wanted food too which was nice. At the moment they’re doing 20% off food if you quote«lobey dosser» when you book so grab that while it lasts. My plan is to head back ASAP for the full Wild West breakfast — available Friday-Sunday, 9am — 11.30 for £10(veggie option available).

Well West on the Corner seemed like the perfect place to wet our whistle after a busy Doors Open day last weekend. Now I don’t know the history of this bar so I can’t compare it to the predecessor but it serves a damn good pint and if you live up West, it’s a darn sight closer than the West on Glasgow Green! Friendly bar staff, a pleasant ambience, not too big and not too small… Just right! Now I’m a Hefeweizen fan and the best bit is that when you’ve drunk your own body weight in the bar, you can buy more by the litre bottle to take home with you… result! I fully intend to come back and try some of their other beers so I hope WOTC stays around for a while!

Popped in here for a quick refreshment and have to say initial impressions are pretty good! I love the décor and opted for a seat at the bar which allowed me to check out their range of beverages, but not before ordering my own pint of Munich Red, sweet sweet nectar. I’m well acquainted with ‘big brother’ West at Glasgow Green but they’ve smartly kept the direct links subtle, this is definitely a West establishment but it has its own look and feel for sure. I will definitely be back in for food sometime but so far, first impressions are good.
