I’m downgrading my rating because of my most recent experience. They sent me the wrong book, and I finally got that straightened out after wasting lots of time with back-​and-​forth communication. I specifically asked that they let me know when the correct book was mailed, but they never did — so, more wasted time on my part and they continually didn’t answer my (clear-​cut) questions. Finally I demanded a response from a supervisor, and she told me they have no mechanism for letting customers know when «replacement» books will be sent (?! That’s *absurd*). The book finally arrived… the only reason I’m giving four stars is because I’ve otherwise had excellent experiences with this company.

Worst book store ever. The store sells books online as well over Amazon the only thing is: they never arrive.
And instead of a refund, the Customer gets insulted. Many
comments on the web from unsatisfied costumes who never revived their books illustrate how questionable this store actually is.

The Book Depository (TBD) ist ein Onlineshop mit Sitz im britischen Gloucester.
Neben einem breiten Sortiment, das neben britischen und amerikanischen auch fremdsprachige (z.B. deutsche und französische) Bücher umfasst, zeichnet sich TBD auch durch kostenlosen internationalen Versand aus. Zahlen kann man mit Kreditkarte oder über PayPal. Der Versand nach Deutschland erfolgt entweder aus Gloucester oder aus Zürich und braucht etwa eine Woche.
Interessanterweise sind viele deutsche Bücher auch mit Versand bei TBD noch 5−25% billiger.
Schuld ist das deutsche Buchpreisbindungsgesetz. Buchhändler dürfen keine Rabatte auf Bücher geben, da die Regierung sie auf Kosten der Verbraucher schützen will. Das ist Klientelpolitik, die auch noch nach hinten losgeht. Denn Händler aus dem EU-​Ausland sind nicht betroffen und dürfen Rabatte auf deutsche Bücher geben, wie sie lustig sind.
Daher bestelle ich Bücher sehr gerne bei TBD und lege es auch jedem anderen ans Herz. Gute Sache auch als Verbraucher kann man von der Globalisierung profitieren.
