Pretty good steak, not really amazing. Atmosphere is pleasant; the restaurant is bright and open. Staff are polite.

Delicious steak and sides. One of the nicest restaurants in Guildford

One of my best friends in the world lives in Guildford and when I visited him here during my term abroad, he convinced me to buy him dinner here for his birthday. At the end of the meal I was 75 quid poorer(joke’s on me for saying I’d treat him!) but we had a lovely evening in a very funky space. We split their rose sangria, and I had the filet medallions with chips and he had some kind of massive cut of beef(I can’t remember now just how large it was, but it was huge) also with chips. My filet was very tender and the chips crisp and excellently fried. We had some kind of blue cheese dip for the fries that was also lovely. The waitress was very nice and incredibly accommodating both of our continuing drunkenness throughout the evening(as one pitcher of sangria turned into three) and my American debit card, which had to be swiped. Sufficiently stuffed and tipsy after our meal, we waddled back down the high street, him back to his house and me to my train to London. It would be a bit out of the way for any London tourist to get here, but if you ever find yourself in Guildford, this is a nice little spot.

Dinner for a group of 6. 1. Service was very good. Our waitress was initially tripped up by the resident coffee snob ordering a «dry» Cappuccino(LOL), but once she understood she nailed it. Bravo! 2. Tira de Ancho — I was actually expecting robust South American flavors, but was surprised that is was much more subtle. The steak was delicious but I was expecting spice city. That is not the case. 3. Chorizo empanadas were tasty as a small plate starter This is a solid restaurant. Great service and good food

I was a little apprehensive about Cau as we only had 90 minutes before the film we were going to see was due to start, and I had read about he service, and it was a Saturday night. However we had 3 courses and coffee and still made without ever feeling rushed. I had Salt and Pepper squid to start, which was OK, but you don’t go to an Argentinian Steakhouse for the Squid. I had the Lomito for my main, an 18 oz butterflied Rump. It was amazing, probably the best steak I’ve ever had. I asked for medium and it came what I would call medium-rare but that was my error not theirs as it was cooked perfectly. Don’t go mad on the sides as it was enormous. The cheesecake was lovely(we shared) and the Flat White was the best I have had outside Australia, really very good, served properly, in a glass. I’d recommend it to all, just make sure you make a reservation. And skip lunch.

Nice place, but emptyor perhaps it was just us coming at around 3 pm on Sunday. The service was good, but the tip on our bill could have been voluntary. They know how to entertain modern kids adds up to the general experience. I liked their food, which is probably the most important information here.

We went to CAU on Friday evening without a reservation but luckily we were able to be seated at a table next to the kitchen /bar area. It was busy and the service was very slow, specially once the main came to our table, our server was MIA. Ended up asking someone else for another drink. So.if you’re hungry for meat and very patient, this place is for you. Their food is delicious! Although I will debate to go back just because of the wait.

First, the good news their steaks are delicious. That’s it though. The loveliness of the steaks does not, however, make up for the limited menu(hello? vegetable side dishes anyone?), the appalling service, and a venue with all the atmosphere and allure of a council-run leisure centre. The service was, at best, brusque not that anyone at Cau would have a wide enough vocabulary to know what that word means. I say this because unless you’re dining in McDonalds, or some other fast-food establishment, for me, dinner is a meal that should be savoured, and enjoyed at a pace that suits the diners, not the staff. Yet despite this, the moment any plate was near empty, a waiter would swoop in, and without asking, snatch it and as many other items from the table as possible. It was as if they wanted us to hurry up and leave. I wouldn’t have minded as much if the place was packed and they were turning people away, but it was half-empty. Then there was the ambience and décor. I’m not sure what they were trying to say with the interior design, but corrugated sheet plastic and stark angular chairs and tables do nothing to relax diners, or give anything to the atmosphere. If you were designing a bus shelter or a leisure centre, maybe it’s appropriate, but not a restaurant. To top it all off, they automatically add a tip to the bill. I’m not averse to tipping when I receive good service(I lived in the States for some years, where tipping is de rigueur), but I absolutely HATE it when places take the presumptive measure of adding a tip without my permission. Tip removed. No further tip added. We will NOT be going back.
