I seem to have discovered through nothing more than meandering experience that small local stores in well-to-do Sussex villages tend to have an extensive stock often ranging beyond the boundaries of the category such stores fall into. Hamfelds is a prime example of this. I doubt you’ll find yourself overwhelmed by the service you’re likely to receive here but it’s fair to say that Hamfelds have taken hard ware to the next level. The way the front of the shop is stocked leads you to the initial presumption that this is like Bert’s home store without the kitsch edge. They have all the staples for a slightly retro home ware store like Braso and off white enamel pie tins with blue edging. But then as you pass through to the rear of the shop it steadily becomes more and more a tool shop, then a garden shop and as you come around to the front of house again a fixings shop. All good quality stuff too. As I’m staying just out of town a lot at the moment I can see this place saving me a good many trips to Brighton’s home and hard ware stores.
