Contrary to popular belief, or at least, my belief when I went there, this isn’t named after John Lennon’s son Julian but the award-winning chef at the helm, who happens to be called Julian. In what appears to be a quaint little boutique is this excellent restaurant with a very high standard of service; all the staff seem to have been very well-trained. In fact the main man takes it upon himself to check if everything’s okay at all the tables, and his wife chats to customers too. You can’t really say fairer than that. The menu tells you where all the food and ingredients have originated from, and you can see that they really prioritise local businesses… heck, they’re all local businesses. It’s always very full, which speaks volumes for its popularity and the loveliness of its food but it also means you might have to book ahead. There are some great starters, desserts and accompaniments, and the John Dory I had was just delicious. I find it so hard to locate that fish in restaurants so I was more than impressed that I got to indulge here. In all, well worth making the trip to the Wirral for!

Nice little place on Birkenhead Road. Had a birthday here for a family member — 10 of us. This restaurant asked our group to choose what we wanted(from starter to dessert) at least a day or so before our reservations. I thought it a little strange, but the place is small(15 – 20 tables), so if we didn’t show they were afraid they’d be turning people away. The 200GBP deposit was a little steep. Food was better than average. My tartlet of pear and blue cheese was good. My venison was not as I imagined it would be, as I am usually asked how I would like it cooked and this was poached in a red-wine-like sauce. Seasoning was nice, but meat was over cooked. Great wine list. Julian came out and asked everyone enjoyed the meal — I was drowned out — the rest of the group loved their respective meals(salmon en croute was apparently delicious). Young staff were adequate for a group this size in a place that small. Would possibly return one day.
