Bluebell was one, if not the number one favourite restaurant of mine up to recently. I believe there have been changes in the kitchen and although the food is still very good the portions have been reduced drastically and the prices tweaked up a touch. Visited twice recently, a little disappointing the first time due to the portion sizes but we gave it another try a couple of weeks later on a Sunday which is usually spot on. This time with friends and the establishment was obviously going through some redecorating and the smell of fresh paint was over powering. I don’t think the decorators had finished either because their was masking tape on some of the windows and the overall impression was as if the painters had downed their brushes and gone for a tea break. One of the attractions of the Bluebell was the relaxing olde-worlde atmosphere, the huge portions and the very fine real ales(which are thankfully still very well kept) and I just hope the planned expansions do not ruin what they had, which would be a shame. We shall try them again and hope by then the painters have finished.

Last sat was our 2nd visit to this pub in 2012 and I shan’t be returning for a 3rd vistit anytime soon. The veggie menu was shocking only a few options, thought this was the 21st century not the dark ages? My hubbie also ordered his steak well done & got it rare, it were disgusting. i’ve been warened about this place before! think twice about booking a meal!

Firstly, the surroundings in the Blue Bell are very nice and an ideal place to go for a quiet drink with a good selection of beers, wines & cocktails on offer(although rather on the pricey side). We booked to eat there for the first time having seen the appealing menu whilst having drinks there and had high expectations of the food. Oh dear! The bottle of wine was just placed on our table, no tasting or pouring offered. The fillet steak was inedible and so tough that I couldn’t even cut it(no steak knife provided) and therefore left it all. The waiter said he would tell the chef but we never heard anything else back from anyone! The dish came with mediterranean vegetables which we thought they had forgotten until we found the 6 very small pieces underneath our steaks. The rest of the food was done very nicely however and my Husband enjoyed his steak. I don’t know whether I was just unlucky but at £23 for a main course I expected a bit more customer service. The dessert menu was uninspiring and looked like all options were bought in. My Husband had the chocolate fudge cake and ice cream which he enjoyed but at £4.95 the portion was at least half of what you would usually receive elsewhere. Would definitely go back for drinks but would think twice about having a meal there again.

ABSOLUTELYDREADFUL! from start to finish the night was awful, the service was terrible, it took 45 minutes before a member of staff came to take our drinks order, and even then offered no apology for the wait and then turned up with the wrong drinks. The food was over priced and the language coming from the kitchen was disgraceful. 80 pound of wasted money in an establishment that has such a good name, it wouldnt suprise me if the arrogant owner writes these reviews himself, an utter let down!

A few months ago, we tried The Bluebell for the first time and had an excellent meal, vowing that we would definitely return. However, having decided to enjoy an anniversary meal there with our relatives, we were very disappointed this time round. I have to agree with other reviewers that the pub is much transformed and has been refurbished to a very high standard, but unfortunately, for us, the service and quality of the food did not live up to the surroundings. After being shown to our table, we had to attract a member of staff to order our drinks after waiting patiently for some time. There was no mention of the«specials» board from the staff, as other reviewers have commented. After ordering our meals, we waited a considerable amount of time for our food to arrive. We couldn’t fault the starters; they were all excellent and we expected to wait a while for our food as everything is cooked to order, but I consider well over an hour for the main meal to arrive is not acceptable. Sadly, for me, although I asked for my steak to be cooked«medium», it arrived«well done» and it was so pale in colour, it could have been mistaken for pork!!! It was totally tasteless and I had to leave most of it as it was gristly. In my opinion, it was a poor quality steak which wasn’t reflected by the price paid. My husband ordered fillet steak and he said it was so tough that he struggled to cut it with a steak knife!!! Although we complained to a member of staff about our meals, we weren’t offered an apology and the girl in question was indignant, so much so that after we complained, she ignored our table for the rest of the evening! We paid the bill and left, but after this experience, we have no plans to return. There are some excellent restaurants and eating bistros in Hull and the surrounding area, but sadly, this is not one of them!!!

A fantastic experience last Saturday(15th January 2011). The place was surprisingly heaving on what we thought would be a quiet night so close following the festive season. The bar was full so we were led to our table which we had previously booked. Extremley polite staff all round made the evening more enjoyable. The food was fantastic. Certainly NOT cheap but well worth the cost of circa £60 for two for a two course meal, wine and beers from the great range of real ales available from the bar. Dishes such as mussles in a creamy tomato and green chilli broth for starters followed by a superb trilogy of fish baked in a skillet in a great sauce(haddock, whiting and juicy king prawns). This dish was certainly one of the best I have had for many years. I could go on but suggest you try it yourself. You may have to wait a while for the freshly prepared food but I can assure you the wait will be worthwhile. ENJOY.

I regularly enjoy the splendid food and hospitality at the Blue Bell and would recommend it to anyone. Andy knows his real ales and keeps an excellent pint as well as a well-stocked bar and wine cellar. Maria is always there to greet with a beaming smile and friendly personality. She will happily run through the specials and describes each one in a way that you know she has not only sampled that dish but that she personally approves of it as well. The food is always superb, well presented and always cooked to perfection. Sometimes there may be a slight wait for food but when food is cooked from fresh and arrives in such wonderful condition and bounteous quantity then it’s well worth the small wait. To be honest I’ve read the negative reviews above and find them hard to believe as genuine, they bear absolutely no resemblance to my experience of the Blue Bell which has become a firm favourite since Andy and Maria transformed a rather dirty and run down pub into a superb gastro pub. I have recommended the Blue Bell to friends and never heard a bad comment from them, they usually can’t wait to thank me for putting them on to such a hidden gem.

Our forth visit to The Blue Bell in Cottingham in as many months. This time for our Anniversary, what a fantastic place we love it. The Hand pulled ale’s are delicious, wine lovely and the food is excellent. We have tried most things on the menu and they are all wonderful. The portions are large and excellent quality. It is not cheap but we consider great value for money. The service is spot on and we didn’t have to wait long for our food, if you do have to wait a little while you could always have another drink and just enjoy the company you are with. If you want great food, great ale in a lovely atmosphere give it a try.

The Blue Bell combines a pub and restaurant well. The menu is fantastic and although expensive at an average £30 a head the food is superb and probably the best in Hull. You do get good value. Service is very good but you do have to wait whilst they actually cook your food to order. They don’t sacrifice quality for the sake of getting you in and out. If you want a full evening out in a relaxing pleasant atmosphere this is the place. There is live music from local musicians at a good quality open mic session every Wednesday. The beer is good quality, well kept and varied.

Not a lot of parking here but theres a street available outside too. Space inside is limited also so preferably for adults not children, especially as the tables in the dining room are quite close together. The dining area is candlelit giving it a lovely relaxedfeeling as soon as you enter They serve an arrangement of foods from traditional pub grub to continental meals. Bit more expensive than usual pubs but with the difference of meals to them you can understand why. The food has always been delicious everytime we’ve been & they often have chalked boards offering specials of the day. The service is also excellent & the staff very helpful. As not too bigger platefuls here you can find room for a dessert, again my fav is the crumble with custardyummy

Average pub. The décor is fairly average, you wouldnt really notice it. There are limited choices for vegetarians. The food is cheap and plentiful. Cheep beer, serving the same you get in every other pub. It is quite a big pub and has a relaxed atmosphere.
