It is what it is; an all you can eat buffet. Where else can you get a 3 course meal for 6.95? If you compare it to the price of a takeaway for a family of four, it’s not much more and there is a lot of variety for all tastes. Yes they may try and rush you, but just be firm, shoo them away if they are bothering you (in a polite way!), you are the customer! Ideal for introducing children to different tastes and if you need a quick meal before theatre etc.

The prices have been getting steadily higher over the past couple of years, but the range of food is very good, and very filling.
Don’t stay past the end of «lunch» though, as it gets very expensive!

I took a party of English language students here and the food was tasty and authentic. The party had Chinese and Taiwanese members. Also some other nationalities, all of them enjoyed the food and those that knew prounounced it like home. There was also a Singaporean woman eating at the next table and she loved it too. I found the staff efficient but not overly so, and they were friendly enough. I’m going to Hull again in February and I will be dining here again.

We have been to the May Sum many times. We have always found that the best food; hottest, freshest, most complete with all the dishes, is always at the start of a session. So a great place if you want a family ‘everyday’ lunch around 12 noon. There are vegetarian dishes available and Vegan members of the family have happily eaten there.
At £6.95 a head, plus drinks, it isn’t the cheapest lunch in Hull, it isn’t the best example of Chinese food in Hull either, even at it’s hottest, freshest and most extensive, but it good value for money, enjoyable and it has certainly solved some family arguments as to where/​what to eat; at least everybody has a wide selection of foods to chose from and younger/​less adventerous family members can try things they wouldn’t want to order an entire dish of off a regular menu.
Try the poached fish and green lipped chilli mussels for something different, they are the best things on the buffet in my opinion. There is a selection of deserts, mainly fresh fruit and ice cream and a very strangely textured and flavoured cake that is worth trying at least once, but the main courses and starters are much better, so if you must, go for coffee and desert somewhere else.
The staff are efficient, friendly but sometimes over enthusiastic about clearing the plates away. The restaurant has a couple of larger tables that are far too close together, (at the end of the bar on the Right Hand Side) but are happy to offer you different seating if you chose not to sit there.
The restaurant is easily accessible for people with mobility problems and there is usually plenty of parking nearby. A lot of families with small children go to the May Sum because it near the main shopping areas and no matter how picky the children/​family are, they will always find something they are willing to eat.
An ‘everyday’ family lunch venue, that I am happy overall to recommend, just remember to go at the start of each meal session for the best value, quality and freshness.

I’ve been to May Sum many times, and although it’s not a goumet restaurant, it provides no-​nonsense adequate food.
I find it especially good for lunchtimes from the office when a group of you wan to to do something a little different. It’s not overly expensive, the food is OK, and because the service is efficient, you can eat plenty and get back to the office in your lunch hour.
I mention the service, as previous reviewers have noted that staff appear eager to take plates away. I have no qualms with this as it means that you can go back and get more without worrying about plates piling up on the table. It also means that you can go back time & time again and get lots of small helpings.
In the case of May Sum keen attentive staff are a credit to the restaurant. Sadly the food can look a bit sad at times, as can cutlery & crockery — hence the 3*‘s

Have been there a few times, but it never really leaves me satisfied. The food can be ok, but most of the time it looks like and tastes like it has been out for days. The décor is a bit… rubbish to be honest. The staff never seem to leave you alone! As soon as you put your fork down, even just to take a breath, they seem to take your plate away! But if you like fast service, then this is the place for you. I think its overpriced for what it is. Its an all you can eat chinese buffet, but I can only ever stomach one plate full, its just not great.

I have been to Maysum before and didnt really rate it, so i made a second visit 12÷01÷10.
Again i came away wishing i had not made the visit.
The food appeared to have been cooked several hours beforehand.
The choice is good, but nothing tastes fresh, there are plenty of Chinese restaurants in the city that offer great deals, serving hot, fresh offerings.
Without doubt this will be my last visit.

I’ve been twice here — staff are not very friendly and both times it just felt a bit dirty — the food was messy and a bit cold and seating cramped. Not keen, wouldn’t go back again

didnt expect to pay £10 a head on a wednesday evening, the weekend maybe but not a week day, been to cheaper far better places. worse £10 ive ever spent the food was greasy as hell and the majority of it was cold. dont know why but they sat about 5 customers (all in different parties) on tables immediately next to each other when we could have easily been spread out as there was plenty of other tables available-​it jst made getting out of your seat a bit awkward as we were all a bit squashed!
it also doesnt help when the person guiding you to your table has 2 huge moles on their face with tonnes of really really long hairs hanging out of them-​kind of makes u feel sick before youve even started!

This ‘eat as much as you like’ Chinese buffet style restaurant is popular and usually seems to be full. However I am not keen on the place. It has a bright green lighting which is on no matter what time of day or night it is. This makes your food and surroundings look a little strange. When we visited the food was cold and pretty unappetising. It is quite a cheap place to eat and the unlimited amount of food, provided you stick within a timescale, seems to appeal to many.
The location is central and near to local Museums, Art Gallery, Theatre and shopping. Personally tgough I would look for somewhere else to eat.

we all have good family meals here its a great way of finding what you like if you always order the same when you get take out. highly reccommended.

I love this place & highly recomend it to anyone. It serves numerous chinese dishes in an all you can eat for 1 price, good for those who aren’t sure of the food as if you don’t like 1 sort there’s plenty more to pick from. Been going here year’s & always have a great time, everyone is so friendly & food is always excellent. Prices are a bit more on evening’s & weekends, student’s get a good discount as do children & those under a certain height go free (kids that is)

May Sum is a walk in chinese buffet restaurant. You can eat all you want for a set price which is different depending on when you go. If the food is hot and fresh it is very nice but if you are unlucky enough to walk in for the end of a service, the food can be a bit cold and stale. The service is always ok although they don’t really tend to you very much after seating and offering a drink. Good for the price. They sometimes seem to want to rush you out if it is busy but I’ve never taken much notice and have always had a nice meal there.

would never go back here, went with my team at work and was asked to pay my money half way through the meal, some of us finsihed and was having a drink, bear in mind it is all you can eat so you could go back after having a break and the staff very rudly asked them to leave. As i was the team leader and had organsied the night i was very upset and complained on the night, they told me they didnt like our attitude, we are not a noisy group nor a rude one and in fact we all work in customer service. I thyen wrote a letter to the manager complainng and i didnt even get a reply. i have since organised many meals and never once have any other company complained about our group.

A chinese equivalent of mcdonalds, limited variety, cheap but cheerful

well what can i say, i wont be going back again, just dont enjoy the almosphere, food if it is stocked up is adiquate and thats it, its like hearding cattle, and you feel presured to eat and leave ready for the next punters…

Recently I have stopped going here the food has got poorer and poorer try elswhere if I where you !!!
