This place is Milkshake Mecca!!! Seriously, so many options and choices and combinations, your mind might melt! I’m a huge fan of milkshakes, to put it lightly. My favourite here was a banana /Nutella /Minstrel mix. «Ooooh Heaven is a placeee on Earth»(Yes that’s Belinda Carlisle). Among the more ‘interesting’ mix-ins are Ferroro Rocher, Jamaica Ginger Cake, Licorice Allsorts(weird combo, innit?), Maple Syrup, Tic Tacs, even Wheetabix!(Guess for that extra cruuunch?) They also serve ‘hot’ milkshakes. My other half tried one of these before… Basically it is what it sounds like; imagine letting your ice cream melt all the way then microwaving it. Not OUR cup of tea, to tell the truth, but maybe it will fit someone else’s fancy?

In previous months, I had always walked past Shakeaway(a café devoted to milkshakes); one because I usually consist of a diet of mashed air, and soaked alfalfa sprouts(not that it seems to do me any good, mind you) and two, because it is always full of kids who would only be close to my age if you added three of them together. The other day though, my 18 year old step brother told me that I need to put down my cup of alfalfa sprouts and head to Shakeaway, so off I went. Thankfully, it was when all the kids were in school that I popped in so I had the servers all to myself. They were very helpful when I told them that I was a Shakeaway virgin, and to please be gentle with me. The menu was a bit overwhelming, seeing that they have over 150 different choices of milkshakes, and that is before you get into the other options — mixing flavours, adding ‘tops’ or ‘bottoms’(hello!) or the daily specials — so I took my time, thought about having a tic tac milkshake, a haribo star mix, or a cucumber milkshake(yuck!!!), before settling on a combo of battenburg and butterscotch. It was absolutely delicious. Personally speaking, I’m not sure that this is probably the best food option for the hoards of teens and tweenies that come in — I think I read something once about sugar not being good for them — but they seem to love this place, even though the milkshakes can add up a bit in price.(Mum and dad, this is where your kids pocket money is going). Still, I can see myself coming in again — I have my eye on the Jamaican ginger cake milkshake.

I don’t understand the low ratings here. Shakeaway is a wonderful start-up business that has now branched out. You know why it’s branched out? Because it’s sheer genius and fills a real gap in the market — American-style thick frozen milkshakes made to order from a choice of over 200 ingredients! It’s fantastic. If your mood strikes, you can have something chocolate and super-sweet or perhaps you want a fruit milkshake. With the options of toppings like whipped cream, maltesters, or a Flake, your milkshake is TRULY your own. My favorite flavor is carrot cake — sounds totally bizarre, but makes the BEST milkshake. No boring plain chocolate for me! The prices have gone up recently, but I still think they are fair for what you get. It can get very busy at weekends, so make sure you’re willing to be patient before sipping that little slice of milkshake heaven.

This milkshake shop is always packed because they make the most divine milkshakes on the face of the earth! One wall is filled with names and descriptions of milkshakes(my favourite is Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate milkshakes) — all sinful, all divine! Aero Mint. After Eight.Amaretti.Apple.Apple & Blackberry. Apple Pie.Apricot.and those are just the A’s. Regular £2.50 or Large £3.60 and they even have some under 400 calories for those watching their weight. Very friendly staff.
