A quirky little hotchpotch bar seemingly for couples on a wet cold Sunday night. Brilliant selection of beers although only 2 Gins on offer and one of them Sloe.,… Need to return when I am in the beer drinking frame of mind to fully appreciate what’s on offer. Atmosphere warm and welcoming and I like the fact that it is not too smart with mismatched furniture and the biggest display of retro pendant lighting dangling down from the ceiling. If I had remembered my reading glasses I would have enjoyed reading the pile of Sunday papers on offer but alas the lack of them and the cosy dimmed lighting put paid to this. £8 for 2 G&Ts is an average Leeds price I think so will definitely return.

Forever on the hunt for decent beer, called in for a few whilst passing with a m8, part of the north bar, Schneider Weisse on tap is getting harder to find, it was spot on and cold, girls behind bar was very nice and as there was only us in, we had waitress service, also good to see where beer prices displayed, £14.90 for one of them may be a shock if you order willy nilly.

What else can I say about this fabulous tiny bar of joy? I can say that I’ve been back several times and consistently enjoyed it. I can say that every member of bar staff I’ve interacted with has been great, they give good banter and know their beer for sure. I can say that I’ve enjoyed every tipple, albeit as pricey as it can be. And I can say that I’m still a fan of the odd and random décor. I wish they’d open a little later, but hey, one can’t have it all. Even so, if you’re wandering Meanwood of a Sunday and want a paper and a pint, this should be on your list. Bringing nothing but more North Bar joy to the area, this is a great spot and I’m well chuffed they’re a part of this area in town. But as Devlin mentioned, watch out and ask before you buy — there’s a few that’ll set you back more than a couple of quid.

I have been eager to visit Alfred for a while now, as I am a fan of North Bar and Further North. I live in Headingley, so not to far away and why I have not been here sooner I will never know. The boy and I decided to walk to Waitrose and get some nice food in for dinner(we were making Halloumi burgers mmmmmm) As it was a Sunday, and partial to a nice beer, we decided to stop and have a drink at Alfred. I had been hankering for some cake all day and was delighted to see that they had some ready and waiting for me on the bar when we arrived; so beer and cake it was, and it was delicious! A generous serving that satisfied the boy and I. There is a great selection of beers at Alfred and plenty of guest ales which is no surprise as it’s part of the North Bar family. The atmosphere is relaxed with a mixed clientele, and it was very pleasant for a Sunday afternoon. I will soon be back at Alfred, perhaps following a lovely walk around Meanwood Valley Park on a Sunday afternoon.

Im starting to think I might have a problem with all the bar reviews I do for Unilocal but that doesnt stop me from walking into places and giving new things a try. Alfred has been open almost a year now and I was meeting a friend in here for a pint after work one day so hence the timing of my review. Very quaint and small kind of what you would expect from a North Bar ran establishment but not lacking a bit of choice in the beer department. I settled down with a pint of Kirkstall Pale Ale which is always a good choice seeing that the brewery is local and the beer is usually in good nick. The pint was pulled nicely so no complaints there. The beer menu is very nice and they have a decent selection of bottles from Belguim and the States. The handpulls seem to feature breweries from the local area which is always a plus and its north so you know that the person behind the bar will know there brews, They serve coffee and cakes and other nibbles if you need to line your stomach if you have had a bit to much to drink and need to get home. So overall this place deserves 4.5 stars as much as I want to give it 5 i just cant bring myself to do it. Meanwood seems to be on the up with the Waitrose and East of Arcadia opening in the past year so I think I need to get down there more often and check out the area seeing if there are any little hidden treasures to find and talk about.

How I have missed this quirky little place for 7 months is beyond me! I think it must be the sheer panic of the mad junction and all the 4x4s that frequent Waitrose! Anyway, the lover and I were coming back from some Meanwood Geocaching just as it got dark and spotted this gem and fancied a cheeky pint. From the outside, it does look a bit like a greasy spoon(perhaps why I dismissed in the daytime), but under closer inspection the many many lamps hanging from the ceiling implied a bar similar to Further North… alas, speculation sometimes pays off! So in we went. A quick nod from the lovely barmaid said that Count Merlot(the hound) could join us(The extra star for a 4star place) and so it was that we enjoyed some slightly pricey beer with a cheese board(just one cheese, but a big wedge) and a drooling dog! Luckily the floors were lino, so easily mopped up! :) The atmosphere is vibrant and seemed to be a range of age groups. Can’t see it being a banging place on a Friday night, but a lovely place to have a chat and catch up… albeit with slightly uncomfortable chairs!

* Me and my mate, Flint went in to this newly opened bar in Meanwood for a midweek pint as we had been anticipating it’s opening for some time. Matt is a Meanwood resident and until the opening of ‘East of Arcadia’(another new ale bar across the road from Alfred) he had no notable places to go for a nearby pint. We were a bit disappointed with East of Arcadia’s atmosphere(slightly reminiscent of an airport bar). As we were familiar with North Bar(Leeds centre) and Further North(Chapel Allerton), whom are owned by the same people as Alfred we were expecting something that would make ‘East of Arcadia’ look a bit pants. We weren’t far wrong. Alfred has a very welcoming feel to it. It’s quite small but that makes it cosy, the bar staff are very chatty and friendly too. The moment we walked up to the bar we were told we could sample any of the beers before we bought one. After we came to the end of our first pint(a Roosters ale from Knaresbrough — there was also a porter on and a ginger one from Manchester — one for the ladies) the barman came over to ask if we wanted another — which we did. Obv’. The clientele all seemed very relaxed and trendy but not in an annoying way. The décor is very nice as well. None of the furniture really matches which helps give the place an individual feel and just makes it more interesting than ‘ikea bars’ that have a very strict theme with all the same tables and chairs. Oh, it also had a very good selection of music on like — Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and The Kinks(at just the right volume too). A bit later, Matt and myself wanted to watch some football results come in and it was fine for us to plug his laptop in and pop it on to the table in front of us while we moved on to our third pint — hic. All in all it’s a great little place to have on your doorstep but I’d also recommend getting a bus down here if you don’t live near by. The only real drawbacks to the place are that the beer is quite expensive but that’s what you have to expect really. They have such an interesting selection of beer that you just won’t be able to try in usual pubs. They do serve Lindeboom if you just fancy a normal lager, though. It is also quite bright inside. This is because they have about 40 different lights hanging down from the ceiling — all with different light shades, which is quite cool but just a few too many lights for such a small place. They do appear to be aware of this, though as there have a small sign that reads ‘Coming soon — Light dimmers’. This is definitely somewhere I’ll be visiting again. For the huge amount of exciting beer available and the welcoming feel the place gives, if nothing else. Good work North Bar Crew!
