This is a pleasant, unassuming real ale pub halfway between, say, the Leeds Royal Armouries and the city centre. The inside is not so special, but there’s a terrace from which you have a nice view onto the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. The selection of hand-pumped real ales is very good indeed, and the beers themselves are well-kept and always fresh. Prices are moderate. Staff are usually nice and helpful. A bit off the beaten track, but worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood.

The sister bar to Stew and Oyster in Oakwood, Calls Landing benefits from what is seemingly the same people choosing the beers — so the selection is large and wide(albeit it the cider options are again hideously lacking) and this is supported by an average range of bar snacks. Much like S&O, the food of coice at Calls Landing is, you guessed it, stew. And oysters. And the stew is goooood. Calls Landing differs from S&O in two major areas… The staff, who are there as a job at Calls Landing(read: the staff can be rude and dickish) and don’t have even half the zest for their job that the guys and girls up in Oakwood seemingly have… And the space, which is to say the fantastic river side drinking area that during the summer months(are we having these any more?) becomes so busy that the idea of being trampled sometimes seems possible. Of course, there’s as always a premium to pay for your drinks outside in the sun, but for those that worship Sol and his magical sunburn inducing rays, there are very few places in Leeds that offer the same access! Complimenting this is the inside of the bar, which differs wildly between the old bar(where the actual bar is) which is cosy, dark and intimate, and the new end of the bar(the back seating area) which is very Ikea-chique and doesn’t at all add anything to the ambiance of the place. Calls Landing is a slightly above average bar, with a fantastic location, which the owners could do so much more with, but they seem happy for it to be run of the mill.

Great location for a quite evenings meal. The stews are great, especially if you have a table full of people and can sample everyone else’s(cheeky I know). The toilets ain’t great but considering Calls Landing is connected with the Cockpit, these gents are 5 star. Good seating area outside and great service.

I visit Calls Landing quite frequently. I mainly see it as a bar, which offers a drink to fit whatever mood I am in; whether it’s a glass(or bottle!) of pinot grigio in the evening summer sun on their south facing riverside terrace, or a nice craft ale whilst nestled up inside on a cold evening. This place is particularly cosy in winter, and last night was no exception; I tried their spiced mulled cider whilst taking part in their Monday night pub quiz(8pm) and it was delicious. Their quiz is good too, not too difficult in that it takes the fun out of it, but challenging enough in that we come 3rd pretty much every week(when will that prize be ours!) There is also a mini game half way through with the opportunity to win a bottle of wine. The BEST bit however, which sets this place apart from the others is the free stews they offer during the quiz. They even offer a veggie one if you ask too, which they did last night and we were very impressed. The stews ARE good. Not a huge menu, but it doesn’t need to be. They are so tasty and they really put effort into vegetarian ones. We visited just to try more of the stew one Sunday, and we weren’t disappointed. The portions aren’t huge but neither are the prices, and they suit as a lovely winter warmer. Though I would love it if they came with more bread to mop up the delicious sauce with. We tried the spiced aubergine which really does have a kick! It was delicious, and we also tried the butternut squash and creamed corn one I think it was and it was very creamy and comforting; exactly what you want from a stew. To sum up, I feel this place is perfect for any kind of occasion, whether it be to eat a warming supper, share a bottle of wine with a friend, have a cosy drink with your partner, or to socialise over a good quiz. It’s certainly worth walking past the hustle and bustle of the city for Calls Landing.

Good wine at reasonable prices on the riverfront. I think the main selling point is the lovely terrace which is south facing. Reasonable prices on booze and a great local for us riverside folk.

They advertise the stew and oyster, I tried some brews and oysters. The bartenders were nice, it was a great place to lounge for a few hours on a sunny day. The oysters were technically not in season, but still beautiful and HUGE. I loved that the vinegar the waiter/bartender brought me seemed to be the Landing’s own special mix. I definitely can’t complain and look forward to coming back for some more! On a side note: It is a personal pet peeve when restaurants have so many menu choices that I feel like I’m reading a book and I can’t tell what they’re good at. I did not have to worry about that here. They have stew, and they have oysters. If you like, you can have bread. My kind of menu!

I’ve nipped in here on a few occasions and it’s always a pleasure to sit in this lovely pub right on top of the River Aire. There’s a bit of history here, since my boyfriend used to manage the bar a few years ago, and I’ve got to say that since then it has had a right old spruce up on the inside. The bar is now along the back wall, facing the entrance, and the seating has been extended farther back inside creating a deceptively large space to enjoy some lovely beverages. The décor is warm, remaining loyal to the structure and vibe of the original building, and there are interesting canvasses hung all around the bar, which further enhances the indie vibe. They offer free wifi, which is an essential feature in any cool bar nowadays, so it should make the hitlist for meetings, working lunches and general cool hang outs. I’ve only had a brief pint in here, and an orange juice on a sunny afternoon, so I can’t speak of the more interesting element of their menu but it’s a really cool place for a relaxed few. Whether it’s the cool outside seating, wee balcony or cool inner space that draws you in I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by the ambiance and friendliness of the staff. Enjoy!

I only had a cup of tea on my last visit to Calls Landing but I’d like to go back for more! This stew and oyster kitchen is situated right along the River Aire in Leeds and I imagine it’s especially lovely in warm weather when the windows can be left open and the place can benefit from the breeze coming off the water.

Sitting proudly in the iconic Calls Landing building, this little restaurant and bar is cool and inviting. Billed as a stew and oyster kitchen, the menu does not apologise for offering a limited choice. Nor should it, the quality of the food more than justifies this. I have been to this somewhat hidden away place for stew on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed. The specials board displays the chalked up daily fare, and recently I have enjoyed a Cumberland sausage and root vegetable casserole topped with seeds, natural yogurt, cheese and rocket. The quality of the meat was apparent, the vegetables were beautifully caramelised and the topping added that extra flavour and texture. The oysters are presented in a small counter packed with crushed ice, and are accompanied with a variety of dressings when served. Calls Landing also offer cheeses and cold meats, this antipasti providing the ideal partner to a tipple or two. On the bar, inviting barrels of succulent olives nestle up to an attractive array of cupcakes. The bar is always adorned with wonderful cask ales on draught, I have renewed my love of the Bishops Finger ale as a result of this. Bottled beers, wines and spirits are also well stocked and varied. Locality of ales and produce is of the utmost importance here, which is wonderful to see. I can not speak highly enough of this sister venue to lovely Leeds based shop Simpsons, the highest of my accolades it does receive.

Calls Landing is a lot smaller than one would expect, judging from the large signs outside. It has a compact interior that takes you a moment to adjust to upon entry. There is a really lovely atmosphere in there. They have very quirky furniture, and the barstaff are all lovely and easy to have a chat with. They have a very unique and inventive stew menu, as well as oysters on ice at the bar. The sign outside does say that it is a stew and oyster bar, but there is something fairly odd about having an oyster display when you go into a bar to have a drink. I do have to say, they do have a good range of beer here!
