Johnny’s Ices one of those staples of Leeds city centre that you absolutely take for granted, as I have done, and because you always know it’ll be there you often forget about them. Well, after a long day in the centre last Saturday I took full advantage, and what could have been a total non-event became an utterly pleasant and delightful fifteen minutes of ice cream eating. My friend and I stopped to grab a cone before heading homeward and ended up chatting away to Johnny and his lovely partner for a good fifteen minutes. We had too much stuff to eat and walk, so paused by his van, and ended up nattering on for ages with them. They are such lovely people! Firstly they went into the history of the business, proudly explaining that the photograph on the van was indeed himself, in the seventies with a beautifully massive do. Seriously, take a look at the photo — it rocks. He lamented for a time about the lack of creative fashion men suffer these days, and claimed if he could get away with 6 inch platforms, flares and flowers now he would! He’s been doing this all his life and couldn’t be more proud of the ice cream he serves — not watered down like some, and he certainly takes pride in the cleanliness of his machines, which make the ice cream. All of which is lovely to hear, especially as you’re consuming the product. They went on to talk about all the creative hobbies they have, which all added up to an incredibly active and colourful lifestyle, including singing and acting amongst other things! And finally, the ice cream was delish. A very generous portion, with any toppings for free, for about £1.30(I think, I didn’t pay!) is ruddy good to me. And, as their signage says, you can’t fake a flake, so I might treat myself to one of those added in next time. Come rain or shine, throughout the year, these guys will be there to provide yum-licious ice cream and happy friendly anecdotes. Take ten and go say hi, you’ll have a right laugh. And, obviously, a delicious ice cream!
