Well, hypocrisy comes in all kinds of colours, especially when one is after a pint post-11pm in Headingley town. As it happens, such a situation occurred last night after team Unilocal lost the Arcadia quiz. We fancied continuing the convo, but LS6 has a dearth of hide aways for fellow cosy ale drinkers, after hours. Glumly admitting defeat on such a cold evening, we made the choice to Box it up — Arc, Voodoo and Trio being that tiny bit further to walk. Lazy, and hypocritical am I. And to be honest, it’s absolutely fine here, on the proviso that you’re a student. I’m sure some studes would prefer elsewhere, but it hits all the key factors –cheap food, drink offers, pool tables, and all the screens showing all the sport and music videos you can handle. The staff were sound, friendly certainly, if a little unsure of what constitutes a fruit beer: we had asked for one and he offered us Fosters. I believe it was on offer though! The space is large, comfy, and the outside smoking area is still pretty cool. It was a little too galeforce to cope with last night, so we hid in a corner and tried not to look too obviously un-student. The screens are quite distracting, and the quality of music videos these days(see how easily I fit into an ‘old person’ manner of speaking) are hilarious. I can’t quite get over how ridiculous they are, but then I was never a huge R&B and pop fan. It certainly made for interesting conversation. The atmosphere, for those akin to my way of drinking, is bearable on a week night if you enjoy chatting and supping, regardless of the drink/music quality. It’s, as mentioned, very welcome to students so you can still make a night of it no matter which day of the week — the table near us were having a riot. The bouncer is lovely and friendly, which is fabulous, and over all it suits for one last pint. I couldn’t possibly face up to the crowds on a weekend, it’s just not my thing, but there’s plenty who have a good time here I’m sure. All in all, it’s unlikely I’ll be back any time soon. I certainly don’t love it, and it’s a taste thing as it does well at what it does, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Been here a few times on the famous otley runs. It’s one of the great places where it feels modern and in the crowd of people you go with has a great atmosphere. Open spaces and many places to chat and drink. Great staff when iv been. But no doubt they change more frequent than the prices with and drinking establishment these days

A favourite with weekend drinkers who’ve decided to give town a miss — or got too drunk to be allowed in a taxi — this bar/club does exactly what it says on the tin. Open til late at the weekends, it provides booze, music and pulling opportunities to those for whom these factors are top priority. The open plan layout and large smoking terrace are prime areas for posing and people watching, and hundreds of people, mostly if not all students, gather here every evening to do just that. The drink selection is what you’d expect, with a fairly good selection of trendy bottled beers, and the food looks good — though I’ve never been able to get far enough past the menu’s eye-bleeding graphics and appalling grammar to give it a go. All in all, it’s an okay place for a drink and a dance, but anyone wanting anything else from their Saturday night should look further afield.

The Box convincingly multi-tasks as a venue. Predominantly a trendy bar, The Box also offers a posh pub-grub menu and weekend«club» nights. The décor is flash, with plush leather seating and shiny black marble floors. Such décor makes The Box stand out from the mostly basic, traditional pubs on the Otley Road. Although slightly over priced, the variety of drinks is vast and serves my favorite,(a nice cold bottle of Desperado’s) as well as cocktails. The clientele is mostly the richer student(surely that shouldn’t be possible!), therefore the fishbowl drink is a popular and recommended drink to purchase on a weekend booze-up. The menu includes breakfast in the morning, gourmet burgers, salads, pizza and other pub meals, tarted up a bit. The food is presented as a mini art form, however portions seem rather small for what you pay.(especially as surrounding pubs offer such cheap and tasty food offers) At the weekend The Box is hoarded with students and there is often a queue at the door. The club evenings are more the definitely a hit with the locals and well dressed students. Chart hits are played until the early hours of the morning. The terrace is nicely decorated in leather also for the smokers, those with a coat and those too drunk to care! The box has a trendy, chilled out vibe during the day more suited to me. Nevertheless friends of mine live for a drink and dance at The Box at the weekend!

The Box is usually the busiest of the late-night bars in Headingley, and the crowds usually peak around 11PM, when the(much cheaper) pubs start kicking everyone out. While it’s good that it gets so busy in terms of atmosphere and banter, it can sometimes get unpleasantly overcrowded, and you get the impression that the bouncers don’t really care. Thus, getting a drink at the upstairs bar(the more lively area of The Box) usually takes a fair while. The beers themselves are priced similarly to those in The Arc and Trio, but they do offer a nice selection of bottles here(Desperados obviously being the best) — although you’ll be paying around £3.30 for a bottle. During the day, The Box serves reasonable food(the pizzas are probably the pick of the bunch) and is usually frequented by students playing pool and watching SkySports News, meaning there is always a good atmosphere in this place. Overall, The Box is a good venue for ending the night if you can’t be bothered with town, but it is equally good as a short stop on the way to town; it’s a classy bar but also student friendly, which makes for a good atmosphere, and I’d particularly recommend it to anyone who smokes, as it has perhaps the best smoking terrace in Leeds.

Defintely a sports bar, so if your into you sports its the place to go. Its always over run by students and always loud. Just dont go if you want a quiet time. Its not really my cup of tea, but if your into sports, its definitely where you want to go.

Sports bar so don’t go here for a quiet time! Though the food is good, if you eat it anywhere inside the main area and there’s a match on you can feel quite overlooked!

Many different vibes depending on time. Chilled out in the day, but come dark beward of the foxes trying to snag a Rhino.

This is a great place to go for a midweek drink with a few mates and if you are a student, you will fit in easily, if you want to pull a student this is heaven! Don’t forget in Leeds, students might be busy with a job and studies, but you will have to be fasionable as the cliental here are very fashion aware, so get your threads on and get down the box. This is great for a midweek drink before clubbing to play some pool, drink some lager, the football will be on so have a bite to eat as the food is cheap and good here, kiss a cutie and if it is September/October try and feel a little fresher!

What I love about this place is they have got the music volume spot on — i.e. not too loud so youre shouting but loud enough so it adds to the evening bar crawl-esque atmosphere. It is large and airy and has various areas to chat with your friends.

The Box is one of the more modern bars in headingley with a real friendly atmosphere. It is a popular bar amongst students and young professionals. It has great music and a great place to chill out til late in the mornin if you dont fancy heading to a club. With 3 American sized pool tables it offers an ideal place just to chill with your mates. It also has plasma T. V’s ideal for catching the weekend sort be it the footie or rugby, or any sport you really wanna watch. The food is also great and well valued with regards to the portions. I would say it is an american style menu with burgers aplenty as well as offering the choice of fantastic pizzas.
