just a quick review as it was just a quick visit this time around… Decent enough pub in Headingley. Décor is a bit dodgy, it has an ‘unfinished’ feel to it, although when you look around you realised that it’s actually all done. Can’t put my finger on why it felt that way! On the night we went in, the atmos was also severely lacking. However it did have one of my absolute favourite beers, Leeds Pale on, so that is a massive plus point in my book. Get yerself there for nice beer!

Well I may’ve just hit the wrong side of 30 but I still like to think of myself as down with the kids. Please someone tell me I am still cool and can legimately dance in clubs and eat greasy kebabs at 4 in the morning. Just to make sure I’ve decided to venture into student land and the Three Horseshoes fits the criteria. That’s not to say it’s exclusively what it is, not at all. You can grab yourself a real ale but it’s also good on the more mass market drinks and appeals to your purse more than some city centre counterparts. It is geared for a good drinking session though if that is what you want and a Sunday watching the football with mates is always a winner. You can even cram in a nice roast and make a day of it. You’ll find an eclectic mixture of people too but if you don’t like students, you may not like it. But if you really don’t like students, what’s the matter with you anyway?!? Go stand in the naughty corner in the beer garden. Oh and they do regular quiz nights too so you can show off your knowledge or lack of it to the world at large. Just keep me away from the Strongbow please or it could get messy. After all I’m not 21 any more.

For far Headingley pubs you all of a sudden get a flurry of choice, well, three or so. The Three Horseshoes is one of those choices and as they go it’s not such a bad one. Due to the nature of the nearby Beckett’s Park most of the patrons inside are often students, being on the Otley Road pathway it is on occasion filled with badly costumed first-third years readying themselves to get ever more silly as they complete the extensive drinking fest. Other than this you might find the odd local in for a quiet one. Atmosphere is pretty friendly so it’s not bad for a cheeky lunchtime tipple. Drinks are standard pub drinks and standard fare with a nice enough selection of ales, and spirits for those less inclined towards a trad pint. You’ve the added extra bonus of a decent lunchtime fill as well, with a selection of pub grubs that are quite nice. I wouldn’t compare it to the class restaurants of Headingley — but these are a different experience, and a different league, anyway. A real all rounder, nice pub, nice atmosphere.

The Three Horseshoes, located on the corner of the road-fork in Far Headingley, is very similar to its neighbour Woodies. Like Woodies, it probably houses more locals than students on an average day, and, like Woodies, it is a rather traditional ale house which is always a good place to start your evening. It is also a good place for watching sports, with televisions seemingly on every last wall, and it has ample room for smokers or alfresco drinkers, with benches at the front and back of the establishment. One area in which it is markedly different from Woodies, however, is it’s food — probably the best pub grub in Headingley: cheap, tasty, huge portions, and served quickly. Because of this and the other things mentioned, the this place gets more stars than it has Horseshoes.

I mostly like the Three Horseshoes because years ago, on my 21st birthday, Paul Hudson, the weatherman off of Look North, signed my left breast with ‘Paul Hudson was ‘ere’ in black marker pen, and I thought it was ace. I remember I was drinking cider, and that it was cold and tasty, and that there was a comfy sofa. I hope that the cider is still cold and tasty and there’s still a comfy sofa. I shall have to go back now it’s reopened :)
