I called at Well Hung while visiting The Kitchens on their gluten free day on February 27th, hoping they was one rose between the two thorns(Banges & Bacon and The Hip Hop Fish and Chip Shop), but I was wrong. Well Hung is more of a steak based«street-food» joint, from the same owners as Bangers and Bacon, as I later found out. In my opinion these are still 2 different businesses, and I won’t let my experience at Bangers and Bacon, which was very poor affect this review as they are different businesses in general, and I’d hate to be unfair on Well Hung in particular. This is in the«Right-bank» of The Kitchens, next to The Hip Hop Fish Shop, and Bangers and bacon. The Kitchens isn’t a nice place in general, it is very small, narrow and hard for access of wheelchairs, prams and the eldery due to the lack of seating and lack of space between the indoor seats and the vendors, but I’ll touch up on that on my review of «The Kitchens» its-self. Well Hung seemed to be one of the only organized businesses at the event, and seemed to be the main brand running it all, however I was still dissapointed. I feel uncomfortable being served my children, paying the child etc, I know he was only trying to help out but it just makes me feel uncomfotable, considering he was probably under 10 years old. It shown they was really short staffed, and with him running around too between Bangers and Bacon and Well Hung, it just felt like he was trying to do the Olympic 100 meters, and I do feel he should have been more careful, and at least had the«adults» doing the serving. If he was collecting plates, I’d be less angry at that, but taking my money and serving me is something else. The menu at Well Hung was mediocre, and all the«adult» on the till earlier could really recommenced was the steak sandwiches, which shown a lack of selection for gluten free despite having a gluten free day, even the menu was unprofessional, with the menu being printed just for this event having crosses on already, and just an hour or two into the event — They surely couldn’t have run out already, but that would also show they were not prepared enough through not having enough stock in. I didn’t really like anything on the menu, so I just picked up a drink to go with my meal from The Hip Hop Fish and Chip Shop nextstore, the smoothie its-self was actually on sale at Bangers and Bacon, but I was told to pay for it here. It was £2.50 for a relatively small bottle, and it still wasn’t good quality either. Due to the issues mentioned above, I am struggling to conclude a reason why this place deserves anymore than a single one star sadly, With the main reasons being the«kid» server and the lack of information provided and a lack of a decent, easy menu to look at. They were more prepared yes, but not by much in an event I think was a shambals and shown the flaws of most businesses here, including Well Hung.

Well Hung occupies the central spot of one side of The Kitchens, a street food initiative bringing a whole host of local traders together to give a varied selection of cuisines and culinary offerings to Spinningfields’ worker crowd. Nestled between Bangers and Bacon(also under the same ownership) and the Hip Hop Chip Shop, it offers steak and chips and variations on those two staples. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the chef come server who offered us a drink whilst we decide what to order and informed us that some diners had reacted with surprise to discover that The Kitchens are fully licensed and serve an array of alcoholic drinks. As we were dining on steak and chips, we decided it had to be red wine and as there was a bottle already open, we were offered us a taste to help aid our decision. The bottle was more than worth the £12 price tag and, there being a bottle for just £10, Well Hung have priced their drinks to match the street food concept and the relaxed setting. We both opted for the steak and chips(no bread, no bun) and upgraded our fries to truffle parmesan. Despite the fact that the atmosphere is very informal and the seating is picnic tables and wooden chairs, the chef/server brought the bottle of wine to our table and made a performance of showing us the bottle and asking whether we wanted to try it; ‘sirs’ and ‘madams’ thrown in for additional humour. It was towards the end of the listed opening hours when we visited which may have had an impact on the personal and exclusive nature of the service we received but it didn’t feel in any way a chore and even when we kept the chef/server there after finish time it was no trouble, and he even offered us(and encouraged) dessert of a chocolate brownie. The steak was perfectly cooked and beautifully tender and the fries were the perfect balance of crispy and soggy and the parmesan truffle not overpowering, as it sometimes can be. A meal that wouldn’t have felt out of place in some of the finer upmarket establishments in the city, at a fraction of the cost, in the least stuffy and pretentious surroundings imaginable, it was a true delight and the genuine warmness that the chef/server showed us made the experience all the more enjoyable. He let us into an insider exclusive; that the Kitchens are looking into extending their opening hours later into the evening(they currently close at 9pm) provided the market is there, which based on my recent visit, I would say it definitely is. An exciting concept, a unique venue; I’d say this is definitely one to watch!

The Kitchens has undergone quite a few changes recently, most notably with the addition of three new traders. The first of these was Well Hung; a tongue in cheek nod towards their care for everything steak related. The menu is short and sweet but you could certainly come here on a number of occasions and try something different each time. A group of us recently visited from work for a Friday treat — what more could you want than a steak, cooked with care, sat stop a salty pile of chips? Despite my note on variety, we all went for the steak flatbread; although the bread looked delicious(that perfect thickness for mopping up steak juice!) there’s no option to nap at work so needed something less carb-laden. The steak is cooked medium rare — perfect — meaning it has both a charred outside and soft middle. The flatbread held together well, needing some support from its foil wrapping, despite the delicious moisture from the meat. I went for the chimichurri sauce which added both heat and garlic, but heard very good things about the blue cheese sauce also. The sweet potato fries were perfectly seasoned and finished the meal deal off perfectly. Steak for every meal, please.

The best steak sandwich I’ve ever had. My trip down to the kitchens for a catch up with friends soon turned into my first visit to Well Hung. For the price, £5.50 for a steak sandwich and £10 for steak and chips, it’s incredible and by far the best food for the best value you’ll find. The steak sandwich was tender and juicy, served with garlic bernaise sauce, lettuce and tomato on thick cut, toasted bread. It was devoured. The beef dripping chips were also excellent. my choice were the Parmesan and truffle chips and I ate the entire plateful. Neil C. opted for steak and chips(£10) with garlic bernaise and sweet yellow tomatoes and was very pleased with his choice! I envy those who work or live in Spinningfields! I would be here every day.
