You wouldn’t expect to find such an amazing restaurant in a tiny little village like Newick. Its only claim to fame is the vile, sneering failed journalist Piers Morgan is from there. Don’t let that put you off though! The 272 has been running for 6 years now and attracts some pretty discerning diners from near and far. We ate there for the 1st time last month and were really pleased with every aspect of the meal. The décor in the place is nice and classy but comfortable and the food was just out of this world. I had Pan Seared Foie Gras On Toasted Walnut Bread to start(there’s not many places to get that in Sussex!) and for main I had Pan Fried Monkfish On Creamy Parmesan Polenta. The whole menu is exciting and adventurous beyond belief and that’s great to see now a days.

This restaurant is relatively local for me and is located on the A272 — hence the name. But don’t let the fact it is situated on a busy road put you off. Once you step through the door you are oblivious to the road and are welcomed into a modern, light and non-fussy place. The 272 advertises itself as a Modern European/French restaurant which is very accurate and the prices are fairly typical of this type of establishment(£7 starters and £17 mains). I did not try the wine but the wine list looked comprehensive — starting from £13.50. The menu changes weekly and once a month a themed evening is held which includes a cooking demonstration — although I have not attended one the idea is an attractive one and may make a good present for a food enthusiast. I have only eaten here on one occasion(a wedding anniversary) and I perceive it as the sort of place that you might treat yourself to once in a while. Unfortunately the experience did not meet my expectations. I would go as far as to suggest this is a good place to go for some nice food but don’t expect a romantic evening. It is very similar to Jeremys in Borde Hill in this respect. My wife has returned subsequently as part of a group and enjoyed it far more. Overall, although good food at reasonable prices I feel the open plan nature lends itself to group dining but couples can be left feeling like their poor relations.
